Pressure-induced dimerization and collapse of antiferromagnetism in the Kitaev material $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$

We present magnetization measurements carried out on polycrystalline and single-crystalline samples of $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ under hydrostatic pressures up to 2 GPa and establish the temperature-pressure phase diagram of this material. The Néel temperature ($T_{\rm{N}}$) of $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ is slightly enhanced upon compression with $dT_{\rm{N}}/dp$ = 1.5 K/GPa. Above 1.2 GPa, $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ undergoes a first-order phase transition toward a nonmagnetic dimerized phase, with no traces of the magnetic phase observed above 1.8 GPa at low temperatures. The critical pressure of the structural dimerization is strongly temperature-dependent. This temperature dependence is well reproduced on the ab initio level by taking into account lower phonon entropy in the nonmagnetic phase. We further show that the initial increase in $T_{\rm{N}}$ of the magnetic phase is due to a weakening of the Kitaev interaction $K$ along with the enhancement of the Heisenberg term $J$ and off-diagonal anisotropy $Γ$. Our study reveals a common thread in the interplay of magnetism and dimerization in pressured Kitaev materials.

Evidence for strong electron correlations in a non-symmorphic Dirac semimetal

Metallic iridium oxides (iridates) provide a fertile playground to explore new phenomena resulting from the interplay between topological protection, spin-orbit and electron-electron interactions. To date, however, few studies of the low energy electronic excitations exist due to the difficulty in synthesising crystals with sufficiently large carrier mean-free-paths. Here, we report the observation of Shubnikov-de Haas quantum oscillations in high-quality single crystals of monoclinic SrIrO$_3$ in magnetic fields up to 35~T. Analysis of the oscillations reveals a Fermi surface comprising multiple small pockets with effective masses up to 4.5 times larger than the calculated band mass. \textit{Ab-initio} calculations reveal robust linear band-crossings at the Brillouin zone boundary, due to its non-symmorphic symmetry, and overall we find good agreement between the angular dependence of the oscillations and the theoretical expectations. Further evidence of strong electron correlations is realized through the observation of signatures of non-Fermi liquid transport as well as a large Kadowaki-Woods ratio. These collective findings, coupled with knowledge of the evolution of the electronic state across the Ruddlesden-Popper iridate series, establishes monoclinic SrIrO$_3$ as a topological semimetal on the boundary of the Mott metal-insulator transition.

Toward cubic symmetry for Ir$^{4+}$: structure and magnetism of antifluorite K$_2$IrBr$_6$

Crystal structure, electronic state of Ir$^{4+}$, and magnetic properties of the antifluorite compound K$_2$IrBr$_6$ are studied using high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction, resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), thermodynamic and transport measurements, and ab initio calculations. The crystal symmetry is reduced from cubic at room temperature to tetragonal below 170 K and eventually to monoclinic below 122 K. These changes are tracked by the evolution of the non-cubic crystal-field splitting $Δ$ measured by RIXS. Non-monotonic changes in $Δ$ are ascribed to the competing effects of the tilt, rotation, and deformation of the IrBr$_6$ octahedra as well as tetragonal strain on the electronic levels of Ir$^{4+}$. The Néel temperature of $T_N=11.9$ K exceeds that of the isostructural K$_2$IrCl$_6$, and the magnitude of frustration on the fcc spin lattice decreases. We argue that the replacement of Cl by Br weakens electronic correlations and enhances magnetic couplings.

Cubic symmetry and magnetic frustration on the $fcc$ spin lattice in K$_2$IrCl$_6$

Cubic crystal structure and regular octahedral environment of Ir$^{4+}$ render antifluorite-type K$_2$IrCl$_6$ a model fcc antiferromagnet with a combination of Heisenberg and Kitaev exchange interactions. High-resolution synchrotron powder diffraction confirms cubic symmetry down to at least 20 K, with a low-energy rotary mode gradually suppressed upon cooling. Using thermodynamic and transport measurements, we estimate the activation energy of $Δ\simeq 0.7$ eV for charge transport, the antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature of $θ_{\rm CW}\simeq -43$ K, and the extrapolated saturation field of $H_s\simeq 87$ T. All these parameters are well reproduced \textit{ab initio} using $U_{\rm eff}=2.2$ eV as the effective Coulomb repulsion parameter. The antiferromagnetic Kitaev exchange term of $K\simeq 5$ K is about one half of the Heisenberg term $J\simeq 13$ K. While this combination removes a large part of the classical ground-state degeneracy, the selection of the unique magnetic ground state additionally requires a weak second-neighbor exchange coupling $J_2\simeq 0.2$ K. Our results suggest that K$_2$IrCl$_6$ may offer the best possible cubic conditions for Ir$^{4+}$ and demonstrates the interplay of geometrical and exchange frustration in a high-symmetry setting.
