Invariants of nested Hilbert and Quot schemes on surfaces

Let $(S,p)$ be a smooth pointed surface. In the first part of this paper we study motivic invariants of punctual nested Hilbert schemes attached to $(S,p)$ using the Hilbert-Samuel stratification. We compute two infinite families of motivic classes of punctual nested Hilbert schemes, corresponding to nestings of the form $(2,n)$ and $(3,n)$. As a consequence, we are able to give a lower bound for the number of irreducible components of $S_p^{[2,n]}$ and $S_p^{[3,n]}$. In the second part of this paper we characterise completely the generating series of Euler characteristics of all nested Hilbert and Quot schemes. This is achieved via a novel technique, involving differential operators modelled on the enumerative problem, which we introduce. From this analysis, we deduce that in the Hilbert scheme case the generating series is the product of a rational function by the celebrated Euler's product formula counting integer partitions. In higher rank, we derive functional equations relating the nested Quot scheme generating series to the rank one series, corresponding to nested Hilbert schemes.

Beyond descendants: integrable observables for cohomological field theories

We introduce the concept of integrable observables and propose them as alternatives to the standard Witten's psi classes (a.k.a. descendants in $2D$ quantum gravity) to be coupled with cohomological field theories and their generalisations. The main property of integrable observables is that they retain the integrability properties. We present three examples of integrable observables. The first two recover the Dubrovin-Zhang and double ramification hierarchies, while revealing new structural features in this framework. The third, a new example, builds on recently established properties of the so-called $\mathbbΠ$-class, extending them and placing this class naturally within the theory of integrable systems. Notably, our integrable observables framework yields a proof that the new $\mathbbΠ$-hierarchies are Miura equivalent both to the Dubrovin-Zhang hierarchies and to the double ramification hierarchies. A new very short proof of Witten's conjecture is also provided.

On the large genus of Hurwitz numbers

Hurwitz theory provides a large variety of enumerative problems related to algebraic geometry, mathematical physics, and combinatorics. We give a general framework to approach the large genus asymptotics of Hurwitz theory using only elementary methods and apply it to several types of Hurwitz numbers: single, double, or with an arbitrary numbers of fixed ramifications; simple and / or including completed cycles type of ramification and / or finitely many blocks of weakly monotone and / or strictly monotone types of ramifications. These, to the best of our knowledge, cover most of the Hurwitz numbers studied, and include for instance correlators of the HCIZ matrix model, Grothendieck dessins d'enfant, weighted Hurwitz numbers, and Gromov-Witten invariants of the Riemann sphere. We also apply our method to b-content Hurwitz numbers. As a specialisation, we recover some previously known about the large genus asymptotics of Hurwitz theory, namely classical results by Hurwitz and recent results of Do-He-Robertson, C. Yang, and results connected to recent work of X. Li.

On the combinatorics of the refined 1-leg DT/PT correspondence

We provide a new proof of a result of Bessenrodt on the relation among the generating series of reversed plane partitions and skew plane partitions, motivated by the geometric DT/PT wallcrossing formula for local curves recently proved by the third author. This also recovers a result of Sagan. We moreover establish various new closed formulas for the weighted enumeration of reversed and skew plane partitions, proving a result dual to a theorem by Gansner, we find a new identity on the generating series counting internal and external hooks of a given Young diagram, and we combine the latter with Bessenrodt's theorem. Finally, we interpret our results as identities in the Fock space via the bosonic/fermionic formalism.

Les Houches lecture notes on moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces

In these lecture notes, we provide an introduction to the moduli space of Riemann surfaces, a fundamental concept in the theories of 2D quantum gravity, topological string theory, and matrix models. We begin by reviewing some basic results concerning the recursive boundary structure of the moduli space and the associated cohomology theory. We then present Witten's celebrated conjecture and its generalisation, framing it as a recursive computation of cohomological field theory correlators via topological recursion. We conclude with a discussion of JT gravity in relation to hyperbolic geometry and topological strings. These lecture notes accompanied a series of lectures at the Les Houches school "Quantum Geometry (Mathematical Methods for Gravity, Gauge Theories and Non-Perturbative Physics)" in Summer 2024.

The Spin Gromov-Witten/Hurwitz correspondence for $\mathbb{P}^1$

We study the spin Gromov-Witten (GW) theory of $\mathbb{P}^1$. Using the standard torus action on $\mathbb{P}^1$, we prove that the associated equivariant potential can be expressed by means of operator formalism and satisfies the 2-BKP hierarchy. As a consequence of this result, we prove the spin analogue of the GW/Hurwitz correspondence of Okounkov-Pandharipande for $\mathbb{P}^1$, which was conjectured by J. Lee. Finally, we prove that this correspondence for a general target spin curve follows from a conjectural degeneration formula for spin GW invariants that holds in virtual dimension 0.

Cohomological representations of quantum tau functions

In 2016, Buryak and Rossi introduced the quantum Double Ramification (DR) hierarchies which associate a quantum integrable hierarchy to any Cohomological Field Theory (CohFT). Shortly after, they introduced, in collaboration with Dubrovin and Guéré, the quantum tau functions of these hierarchies. In this work, we study quantum tau functions associated to a specific solution called the topological solution. We provide two cohomological representations for the correlators of these tau functions. The first representation involves an analog in the quantum setting of the $A$-class of the DR-DZ equivalence. The second representation, valid for CohFT of low degree, involves the so-called $Ω$-classes. Furthermore, we establish the string and dilaton equations for these tau functions, and present certain vanishing of their correlators.

Completed Cycles Leaky Hurwitz Numbers

We introduce $(r+1)$-completed cycles $k$-leaky Hurwitz numbers and prove piecewise polynomiality as well as establishing their chamber polynomiality structure and their wall crossing formulae. For $k=0$ the results recover previous results of Shadrin-Spitz-Zvonkine. The specialization for $r=1$ recovers Hurwitz numbers that are close to the ones studied by Cavalieri-Markwig-Ranganathan and Cavalieri-Markwig-Schmitt. The ramifications differ by a lower order torus correction, natural from the Fock space perspective, not affecting the genus zero enumeration, nor the enumeration for leaky parameter values $k = \pm 1$ in all genera.

A new spin on Hurwitz theory and ELSV via theta characteristics

We study spin Hurwitz numbers, which count ramified covers of the Riemann sphere with a sign coming from a theta characteristic. These numbers are known to be related to Gromov-Witten theory of Kähler surfaces and to representation theory of the Sergeev group, and are generated by BKP tau-functions. We use the latter interpretation to give polynomiality properties of these numbers and we derive a spectral curve which we conjecture computes spin Hurwitz numbers via a new type of topological recursion. We prove that this conjectural topological recursion is equivalent to an ELSV-type formula, expressing spin Hurwitz numbers in terms of the Chiodo class twisted by the $2$-spin Witten class.

Rooted trees with level structures, $Ω$-classes and double ramification cycles

We prove a new system of relations in the tautological ring of the moduli space of curves involving stable rooted trees with level structure decorated by the top Chern class of the Hodge bundle and $Ω$-classes and double ramification structures. In particular, this resolves a recent conjecture on these relations as well as connects with one of the two sides of the recently established DR/DZ equivalence between the integrable hierarchies constructions of Buryak and of Dubrovin--Zhang.

A natural basis for intersection numbers

We advertise elementary symmetric polynomials $e_i$ as the natural basis for generating series $A_{g,n}$ of intersection numbers of genus g and n marked points. Closed formulae for $A_{g,n}$ are known for genera $0$ and $1$ -- this approach provides formulae for $g = 2,3,4$, together with an algorithm to compute the formula for any g. The claimed naturality of the e_i basis relies in the unexpected vanishing of some coefficients with a clear pattern: we conjecture that $A_{g,n}$ can have at most $g$ factors $e_i$, with $i>1$, in its expansion. This observation promotes a paradigm for more general cohomology classes. As an application of the conjecture, we find new integral representations of $A_{g,n}$, which recover expressions for the Weil-Petersson volumes in terms of Bessel functions.

On ELSV-type formulae and relations between $Ω$-integrals via deformations of spectral curves

The general relation between Chekhov-Eynard-Orantin topological recursion and the intersection theory on the moduli space of curves, the deformation techniques in topological recursion, and the polynomiality properties with respect to deformation parameters can be combined to derive vanishing relations involving intersection indices of tautological classes. We apply this strategy to three different families of spectral curves and show they give vanishing relations for integrals involving $Ω$-classes. The first class of vanishing relations are genus-independent and generalises the vanishings found by Johnson-Pandharipande-Tseng, and by the authors jointly with Do and Moskovsky. The two other classes of vanishing relations are of a different nature and depend on the genus.

Resurgent large genus asymptotics of intersection numbers

In this paper, we present a novel approach for computing the large genus asymptotics of intersection numbers. Our strategy is based on a resurgent analysis of the $n$-point functions of such intersection numbers, which are computed via determinantal formulae, and relies on the presence of a quantum curve. With this approach, we are able to extend the recent results of Aggarwal for Witten-Kontsevich intersection numbers with the computation of all subleading corrections, proving a conjecture of Guo-Yang, and to obtain new results on $r$-spin and Theta-class intersection numbers.

An intersection-theoretic proof of the Harer-Zagier formula

We provide an intersection-theoretic formula for the Euler characteristic of the moduli space of smooth curves. This formula reads purely in terms of Hodge integrals and, as a corollary, the standard calculus of tautological classes gives a new short proof of the Harer-Zagier formula. Our result is based on the Gauss-Bonnet formula, and on the observation that a certain parametrisation of the $Ω$-class - the Chern class of the universal $r$-th root of the twisted log canonical bundle - provides the Chern class of the log tangent bundle to the moduli space of smooth curves. Being $Ω$-classes by now employed in many enumerative problems, mostly recently found and at times surprisingly different from each other, we dedicate some work to produce an extensive list of their general properties: extending existing ones, finding new ones, and writing down some only known to the experts.

On some hyperelliptic Hurwitz-Hodge integrals

This short note addresses Hodge integrals over the hyperelliptic locus. Recently Afandi computed, via localisation techniques, such one-descendant integrals and showed that they are Stirling numbers. We give another proof of the same statement by a very short argument, exploiting Chern classes of spin structures and relations arising from Topological Recursion in the sense of Eynard and Orantin. These techniques seem also suitable to deal with three orthogonal generalisations: 1. the extension to the r-hyperelliptic locus, 2. the extension to an arbitrary number of non-Weierstrass pairs of points, 3. the extension to multiple descendants.

On the Kontsevich geometry of the combinatorial Teichmüller space

For bordered surfaces S, we develop a complete parallel between the geometry of the combinatorial Teichmüller space $T_S^{comb}$ equipped with Kontsevich symplectic form $ω_K$, and then the usual Weil-Petersson geometry of Teichmüller space $T_S$. The basis for this is an identification of $T_S^{comb}$ with a space of measured foliations with transverse boundary conditions. We equip $T_S^{comb}$ with an analog of the Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates (defined similarly as Dehn-Thurston coordinates) and show they are Darboux for $ω_K$ (analog of Wolpert formula). We then set up the geometric recursion of Andersen-Borot-Orantin to produce mapping class group invariants functions on $T_S^{comb}$ whose integration with respect to Kontsevich volume form satisfy topological recursion. Further we establish an analog of Mirzakhani-McShane identities, and provide applications to the study of the enumeration of multicurves with respect to combinatorial lengths and Masur-Veech volumes. The formalism allows us to provide uniform and completely geometric proofs of Witten's conjecture/Kontsevich theorem and Norbury's topological recursion for lattice point count in the combinatorial moduli space, parallel to Mirzakhani's proof of her recursion for Weil-Petersson volumes. We strengthen results of Mondello and Do on the convergence of hyperbolic geometry to combinatorial geometry along the rescaling flow, allowing us to flow systematically natural constructions on the usual Teichmüller space to their combinatorial analogue, such as a new derivation of the piecewise linear structure of $T_S^{comb}$ originally obtained in the work of Penner, as the limit under the flow of the smooth structure of $T_S$.

Double Hurwitz numbers: polynomiality, topological recursion and intersection theory

Double Hurwitz numbers enumerate branched covers of $\mathbb{CP}^1$ with prescribed ramification over two points and simple ramification elsewhere. In contrast to the single case, their underlying geometry is not well understood. In previous work by the second- and third-named authors, the double Hurwitz numbers were conjectured to satisfy a polynomiality structure and to be governed by the topological recursion, analogous to existing results concerning single Hurwitz numbers. In this paper, we resolve these conjectures by a careful analysis of the semi-infinite wedge representation for double Hurwitz numbers, by pushing further methods previously used for other Hurwitz problems. We deduce a preliminary version of an ELSV-like formula for double Hurwitz numbers, by deforming the Johnson-Pandharipande-Tseng formula for orbifold Hurwitz numbers and using properties of the topological recursion under variation of spectral curves. In the course of this analysis, we unveil certain vanishing properties of the Chiodo classes.
