Motion induced by asymmetric excitation of the quantum vacuum

During the last fifty-one years, the effect of excitation of the quantum vacuum field induced by its coupling with a moving object has been systematically studied. Here, we propose and investigate a somewhat inverted setting: an object, initially at rest, whose motion becomes induced by an excitation of the quantum vacuum caused by the object itself. In the present model, this excitation occurs asymmetrically on different sides of the object by a variation in time of one of its characteristic parameters, which couple it with the quantum vacuum field.

Two-dimensional materials in the presence of nonplanar interfaces

We consider a planar two-dimensional system between two media with different dielectric constants and in the presence of a third dielectric medium separated by a nonplanar interface. Extending a perturbative method for solving Poisson's equation, developed by Clinton, Esrick, and Sacks [Phys. Rev. B, 31, 7540 (1985)], in the presence of nonplanar conducting boundaries to the situation proposed here, we obtain, up to the first order in terms of the function which defines the nonplanar interface, the effective potential, the effective electrostatic field, the effective dielectric constant for the planar 2D system, and the effective external field acting in-plane in the 2D system. Implications of the results to properties of 2D systems are discussed. In the limit of planar surfaces, vacuum-dielectric or vacuum-conducting media, our results are in agreement with those found in the literature.

Dynamical Casimir effect with $δ-δ^{\prime}$ mirrors

We calculate the spectrum and the total rate of created particles for a real massless scalar field in $1+1$ dimensions, in the presence of a partially transparent moving mirror simulated by a Dirac $δ-δ^{\prime}$ point interaction. We show that, for this model, a partially reflecting mirror can produce a larger number of particles in comparison with a perfect one. In the limit of a perfect mirror, our formulas recover those found in the literature for the particle creation by a moving mirror with a Robin boundary condition.

Casimir force between $δ-δ^{\prime}$ mirrors transparent at high frequencies

We investigate, in the context of a real massless scalar field in $1+1$ dimensions, models of partially reflecting mirrors simulated by Dirac $δ-δ^{\prime}$ point interactions. In the literature, these models do not exhibit full transparency at high frequencies. In order to provide a more realistic feature for these models, we propose a modified $δ-δ^{\prime}$ point interaction that enables full transparency in the limit of high frequencies. Taking this modified $δ-δ^{\prime}$ model into account, we investigate the Casimir force, comparing our results with those found in the literature.

Light front Casimir effect at finite temperature

The correct description of the standard Casimir effect for periodic boundary conditions via light front formalism implies in these conditions imposed at fixed Minkowski times [Almeida {\it et al.} Phys. Rev. {\bf D 87}, 065028 (2013); Chabysheva and Hiller, Phys. Rev. {\bf D 88}, 085006 (2013)] instead of fixed light front times. The unphysical nature of this latter condition is manifested in the vacuum part by no regularization yielding a finite Casimir energy density [Lenz and Steinbacher, Phys. Rev. {\bf D 67}, 045010 (2003)]. In the present paper, we extend this discussion and analyze the problem of the light front quantization with simultaneous presence of a thermal bath and boundary conditions. Considering both the oblique light front as well as Dirac light front coordinates, we show that the imposition of periodic boundary conditions at fixed Minkowski times recovers the expected behaviors for the energy density and Casimir entropy. We also investigate how the unphysical nature of the periodic boundary conditions imposed at fixed light front times manifests in the thermal part of the energy and entropy, showing that in the classical limit the Casimir entropy decreases linearly with the temperature (not becoming independent of the temperature as expected), and also that the Kirchhoff theorem is not respected.

New signatures of the dynamical Casimir effect in a superconducting circuit

We found new signatures of the dynamical Casimir effect (DCE) in the context of superconducting circuits. We show that if the recent experiment made by Wilson {\it et al}, which brought the DCE into reality for the first time, is repeated with slight modifications (for instance, different values for the capacitance of the SQUID), three remarkable results will show up, namely: {\it (i)} a quite different spectral distribution for the created particles, deviating from the typical parabolic shape; {\it (ii)} an enhancement by a factor of approximately $5 \times 10^3 $ in the number of created particles with half driven frequency of the effective moving mirror and {\it (iii)} an enhancement by a factor of $3 \times 10^2$ in the particle creation rate. These results may guide the experimentalists in their search for alternative routes to observe the DCE in future experiments.

Relativistic bands in the spectrum of created particles via dynamical Casimir effect

We present a general analytical approach to investigate relativistic corrections in the dynamical Casimir effect (DCE). Particularly, we discuss the behavior of the additional frequency bands that appear in the spectral distribution of the created particles when the first relativistic corrections are taken into account. We do that in the context of circuit QED, by analyzing the setup used in the first measurement of the DCE, where a system with a time-dependent boundary condition simulates the mechanical motion of a single mirror in 1+1 dimensions. Our method is applicable to a large class of systems with oscillatory time-dependent parameters and can be generalized to higher dimensions and other fields.

Inhibition of the dynamical Casimir effect with Robin boundary conditions

We consider a real massless scalar field in 3+1 dimensions satisfying a Robin boundary condition at a nonrelativistic moving mirror. Considering vacuum as the initial field state, we compute explicitly the number of particles created per unit frequency and per unit solid angle, exhibiting in this way the angular dependence of the spectral distribution. The well known cases of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions may be reobtained as particular cases from our results. We show that the particle creation rate can be considerably reduced (with respect to the Dirichlet and Neumann cases) for particular values of the Robin parameter. Our results extend for 3+1 dimensions previous results found in the literature for 1+1 dimensions. Further, we also show that this inhibition of the dynamical Casimir effect occurs for different angles of particle emission.

Time-dependent Robin boundary conditions in the dynamical Casimir effect

Motivated by experiments in which moving boundaries are simulated by time-dependent properties of static systems, we discuss the model of a massless scalar field submitted to a time-dependent Robin boundary condition (BC) at a static mirror in 1+1 dimensions. Using a perturbative approach, we compute the spectral distribution of the created particles and the total particle creation rate, considering a thermal state as the initial field state.

Quantum radiation reaction force on a one-dimensional cavity with two relativistic moving mirrors

We consider a real massless scalar field inside a cavity with two moving mirrors in a two-dimensional spacetime, satisfying Dirichlet boundary condition at the instantaneous position of the boundaries, for arbitrary and relativistic laws of motion. Considering vacuum as the initial field state, we obtain formulas for the exact value of the energy density of the field and the quantum force acting on the boundaries, which extend results found in previous papers. For the particular cases of a cavity with just one moving boundary, non-relativistic velocities, or in the limit of infinity length of the cavity (a single mirror), our results coincide with those found in the literature.

Time evolution of the energy density inside a non-static cavity with a thermal, coherent and a Schrodinger cat state

In this paper we investigate the time evolution of the energy density for a real massless scalar field in a two-dimensional spacetime, inside a non-static cavity, taking as basis the exact numerical approach purposed by Cole and Schieve. Considering Neunmann and Dirichlet boundary conditions, we investigate the following initial states of the field: vacuum, thermal state, the coherent state and the Schrodinger cat state.

Exact solution for the energy density inside a one-dimensional non-static cavity with an arbitrary initial field state

We study the exact solution for the energy density of a real massless scalar field in a two-dimensional spacetime, inside a non-static cavity with an arbitrary initial field state, taking into account the Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions. This work generalizes the exact solution proposed by Cole and Schieve in the context of the Dirichlet boundary condition and vacuum as the initial state. We investigate diagonal states, examining the vacuum and thermal field as particular cases. We also study non-diagonal initial field states, taking as examples the coherent and Schrodinger cat states.

Quantum radiation force on a moving mirror with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions at vacuum, finite temperature and coherent states

We consider a real massless scalar field in a two-dimensional spacetime, satisfying Dirichlet or Neumann boundary condition at the instantaneous position of a moving boundary. For a relativistic law of motion, we show that Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions yield the same radiation force on a moving mirror when the initial field state is invariant under time translations. We obtain the exact formulas for the energy density of the field and the radiation force on the boundary for vacuum, thermal and coherent state. In the nonrelativistic limit, our results coincide with those found in the literature.
