Universal infinitesimal Hilbertianity of sub-Riemannian manifolds

We prove that sub-Riemannian manifolds are infinitesimally Hilbertian (i.e., the associated Sobolev space is Hilbert) when equipped with an arbitrary Radon measure. The result follows from an embedding of metric derivations into the space of square-integrable sections of the horizontal bundle, which we obtain on all weighted sub-Finsler manifolds. As an intermediate tool, of independent interest, we show that any sub-Finsler distance can be monotonically approximated from below by Finsler ones. All the results are obtained in the general setting of possibly rank-varying structures.

Sharp estimate on the inner distance in planar domains

We show that the inner distance inside a bounded planar domain is at most the one-dimensional Hausdorff measure of the boundary of the domain. We prove this sharp result by establishing an improved Painlevé length estimate for connected sets and by using the metric removability of totally disconnected sets, proven by Kalmykov, Kovalev, and Rajala. We also give a totally disconnected example showing that for general sets the Painlevé length bound $κ(E) \leπ\mathcal{H}^1(E)$ is sharp.

Dimension reduction for thin films with transversally varying prestrain: the oscillatory and the non-oscillatory case

We study the non-Euclidean (incompatible) elastic energy functionals in the description of prestressed thin films, at their singular limits ($Γ$-limits) as $h\to 0$ in the film's thickness $h$. Firstly, we extend the prior results [Lewicka-Pakzad, Bhattacharya-Lewicka-Schaffner, Lewicka-Raoult-Ricciotti] to arbitrary incompatibility metrics that depend on both the midplate and the transversal variables (the "non-oscillatory" case). Secondly, we analyze a more general class of incompatibilities, where the transversal dependence of the lower order terms is not necessarily linear (the "oscillatory" case), extending the results of [Agostiniani-Lucic-Lucantonio, Schmidt] to arbitrary metrics and higher order scalings. We exhibit connections between the two cases via projections of appropriate curvature forms on the polynomial tensor spaces. We also show the effective energy quantisation in terms of scalings as a power of $h$ and discuss the scaling regimes $h^2$ (Kirchhoff), $h^4$ (von Kármán) in the general case, as well as all possible (even powers) regimes for conformal metrics, thus paving the way to the subsequent complete analysis of the non-oscillatory setting in [Lewicka]. Thirdly, we prove the coercivity inequalities for the singular limits at $h^2$- and $h^4$- scaling orders, while disproving the full coercivity of the classical von Kármán energy functional at scaling $h^4$.

Infinitesimal Hilbertianity of weighted Riemannian manifolds

The main result of this paper is the following: any `weighted' Riemannian manifold $(M,g,μ)$ - i.e. endowed with a generic non-negative Radon measure $μ$ - is `infinitesimally Hilbertian', which means that its associated Sobolev space $W^{1,2}(M,g,μ)$ is a Hilbert space. We actually prove a stronger result: the abstract tangent module (à la Gigli) associated to any weighted reversible Finsler manifold $(M,F,μ)$ can be isometrically embedded into the space of all measurable sections of the tangent bundle of $M$ that are $2$-integrable with respect to $μ$.

Heterogeneous elastic plates with in-plane modulation of the target curvature and applications to thin gel sheets

We rigorously derive a Kirchhoff plate theory, via $Γ$-convergence, from a three-di\-men\-sio\-nal model that describes the finite elasticity of an elastically heterogeneous, thin sheet. The heterogeneity in the elastic properties of the material results in a spontaneous strain that depends on both the thickness and the plane variables $x'$. At the same time, the spontaneous strain is $h$-close to the identity, where $h$ is the small parameter quantifying the thickness. The 2D Kirchhoff limiting model is constrained to the set of isometric immersions of the mid-plane of the plate into $\mathbb{R}^3$, with a corresponding energy that penalizes deviations of the curvature tensor associated with a deformation from a $x'$-dependent target curvature tensor. A discussion on the 2D minimizers is provided in the case where the target curvature tensor is piecewise constant. Finally, we apply the derived plate theory to the modeling of swelling-induced shape changes in heterogeneous thin gel sheets.

The Serre-Swan theorem for normed modules

The aim of this note is to analyse the structure of the $L^0$-normed $L^0$-modules over a metric measure space. These are a tool that has been introduced by N. Gigli to develop a differential calculus on spaces verifying the Riemannian Curvature Dimension condition. More precisely, we discuss under which conditions an $L^0$-normed $L^0$-module can be viewed as the space of sections of a suitable measurable Banach bundle and in which sense such correspondence can be actually made into an equivalence of categories.
