Hypothesis Testing for High-Dimensional Matrix-Valued Data

This paper addresses hypothesis testing for the mean of matrix-valued data in high-dimensional settings. We investigate the minimum discrepancy test, originally proposed by Cragg (1997), which serves as a rank test for lower-dimensional matrices. We evaluate the performance of this test as the matrix dimensions increase proportionally with the sample size, and identify its limitations when matrix dimensions significantly exceed the sample size. To address these challenges, we propose a new test statistic tailored for high-dimensional matrix rank testing. The oracle version of this statistic is analyzed to highlight its theoretical properties. Additionally, we develop a novel approach for constructing a sparse singular value decomposition (SVD) estimator for singular vectors, providing a comprehensive examination of its theoretical aspects. Using the sparse SVD estimator, we explore the properties of the sample version of our proposed statistic. The paper concludes with simulation studies and two case studies involving surveillance video data, demonstrating the practical utility of our proposed methods.

Pion Condensation and Pion Star from Holographic QCD

The properties of QCD matter at finite isospin densities are investigated employing holographic hard-wall and soft-wall AdS/QCD models. It is confirmed that at high enough isospin densities, charged pions start to condense and the pion superfluid phase appears in the system. It is shown that the chiral condensate and the pion condensate can be transformed to each other and form a `chiral circle' in the superfluid phase. We derived the Equation of State (EoS) for pionic matter, calculated the normalized trace anomaly $Δ$ and $(ε-3p)/m_π^4$, and analyzed the sound speed and adiabatic index. Additionally, we provided data on the mass-radius relation and tidal deformability of pion stars. The results indicate that the holographic models align well with lattice QCD concerning isospin density, axial-vector condensation, EoS, and trace anomaly, though discrepancies in sound speed and adiabatic index emerge at higher isospin chemical potentials. The holographic models closely match those from chiral perturbation theory ($χ$PT), suggesting that they can be considered as five-dimensional description of $χ$PT.

Deconfinement and chiral restoration phase transition under rotation from holography in an anisotropic gravitational background

We investigate the effects of rotation on deconfinement and chiral phase transitions in the framework of dynamical holographic QCD model. Instead of transforming to the rotating system by Lorentz boost, we construct an anisotropic gravitational background by incorporating the rotating boundary current. We firstly investigate the pure gluon system under rotation to extract deconfinement phase transition from the Polyakov loop then add 2-flavor probe for chiral restoration phase transition from the chiral condensate. It is observed that at low chemical potentials, the deconfinement phase transition of pure gluon system is of first order and the chiral phase transition of 2-flavor system is of crossover. Both the critical temperatures of deconfinement and chiral phase transitions decrease/increase with imaginary/real angular velocity ($Ω_I/Ω$) as $T/T_c\sim 1- C_2 Ω_I^2$ and $T/T_c\sim 1+ C_2 Ω^2$, which is consistent with lattice QCD results. In the temperature-chemical potential $T-μ$ phase diagram, the critical end point (CEP) moves towards regions of higher temperature and chemical potential with real angular velocity.

Pion quasiparticles in isospin medium from holography

The properties of the pion quasiparticle in hot and dense isospin medium, including the temperature and isospin chemical potential dependence of their screening mass, pole mass and thermal width, as well as their relationships with the pion superfluid phase transition, are investigated in the framework of two-flavor ($N_{f}=2$) soft-wall AdS/QCD models. We extract the screening mass of the pion from the pole of the spatial two-point Retarded correlation function. We find that the screening masses of both neutral and charged pions increase monotonously with the increasing of temperature. However, the isospin chemical potential $μ_{I}$ would depress the screening masses of the charged pions, $m_{π^{\pm},\rm{scr}}$. With the increasing of $μ_{I}$, $m_{π^{\pm},\rm{scr}}$ monotonically decrease to zero on the boundary between the normal phase and the pion superfluid phase, while the screening mass of the neutral pion, $m_{π^0,\rm{scr}}$, remains almost unchanged. The pole mass $m_{\rm{pole}}$ and thermal width $Γ$ of the pion are extracted from the pole of temporal two-point Retarded correlation function, i.e., the corresponding quasi-normal frequencies, $ω=m_{\rm{pole}}-iΓ/2$. The results show that the pole masses of the three modes ($π^0, π^+, π^-$) are splitting at finite $μ_{I}$. The thermal widths of the three modes monotonically increase with temperature. Furthermore, the pole mass of $π^+$ decreases almost linearly with the increasing of $μ_{I}$ and reaches zero at $μ_{I}=μ_{I}^c$, It means that $π^+$ becomes a massless Goldstone boson of the pion superfluid phase transition.

Thermalization and prethermalization in the soft-wall AdS/QCD model

The real-time dynamics of chiral phase transition is investigated in a two-flavor ($N_f=2$) soft-wall AdS/QCD model. To understand the dynamics of thermalization, we quench the system from initial states deviating from the equilibrium states. Then, we solve the nonequilibrium evolution of the order parameter (chiral condensate $\langle σ\equiv\bar{q}q\rangle$). It is shown that the system undergoes an exponential relaxation at temperatures away from the critical temperature $T_c$. The relaxation time diverges at $T_c$, presenting a typical behavior of critical slowing down. Numerically, we extract the dynamic critical exponent $z$, and get $z\approx 2$ by fitting the scaling behavior $σ\propto t^{-β/(νz)}$, where the mean-field static critical exponents (order parameter critical exponent $β=1/2$, correlation length critical exponent $ν=1/2$ ) have been applied. More interestingly, it is remarked that, for a large class of initial states, the system would linger over a quasi-steady state for a certain period of time before the thermalization. It is suggested that the interesting phenomenon, known as prethermalization, has been observed in the framework of holographic models. In such prethermal stage, we verify that the system is characterized by a universal dynamical scaling law and described by the initial-slip exponent $θ=0$.

The hadron spectra and pion form factor in dynamical holographic QCD model with anomalous 5D mass of scalar field

The simplest version of the dynamical holographic QCD model is described by adding the KKSS model action on a dilaton-graviton coupled background, in which the AdS$_5$ metric is deformed by the gluon condensation and further deformed by the chiral condensation. In this framework, both the chiral symmetry breaking and linear confinement can be realized, the light-flavor hadron spectra and the pion form factor were investigated but it was difficult to reconcile the light-flavor hadron spectra and pion form factor. By considering the anomalous 5-dimension mass correction of the scalar field from QCD running coupling, it is found that the light flavor hadron spectra and pion form factor can be described well simultaneously, especially the ground state and lower excitation states of scalar, pseudo scalar and axial vector meson spectra are improved, but the vector meson spectra is not sensitive to the anomalous 5-dimension mass correction of the scalar field.

Bubble nucleation and gravitational wave from holography

We investigate the bounce solution in the holographic QCD and electroweak models with first-order phase transition. The strength parameter $α$, inverse duration time $β/H$, and bubble wall velocity $v_w$ in the gravitational wave power spectra are calculated by holographic bounce solution. In contrast to the results of field theory, we find the parameter $α$ is about $\mathcal{O}(1)$ and $β/H$ is about $10^4$, which imply that the phase transition is fast and strong. The critical, nucleation and percolation temperatures of the phase transition are close to each other in the holographic model. In addition, the velocity $v_w$ is found to be less than the sound speed of the plasma $c_{s}=1/\sqrt{3}$, which corresponds to the deflagration scenario. For QCD phase transition, the gravitational wave power spectrum can reach $10^{-13}-10^{-14}$ around the peak frequency of 0.01 Hz, which can be detected by BBO and Ultimate-DECIGO. For electroweak phase transition, the gravitational wave power spectrum can reach $10^{-12}-10^{-16}$ around the peak frequency $1-10$ Hz. Moreover, the primordial black hole is not favorable for formation due to the large parameter $β/H$ and small velocity $v_w$.

Pion dynamics in a soft-wall AdS-QCD model

Pseudo-Goldstone modes appear in many physical systems and display robust universal features. First, their mass $m$ obeys the so-called Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner (GMOR) relation $f^2\,m^2=H\,\barσ$, with $f$ the Goldstone stiffness, $H$ the explicit breaking scale and $\barσ$ the spontaneous condensate. More recently, it has been shown that their damping $Ω$ is constrained to follow the relation $Ω=m^2 D_φ$, where $D_φ$ is the Goldstone diffusivity in the purely spontaneous phase. Pions are the most paradigmatic example of pseudo-Goldstone modes and they are related to chiral symmetry breaking in QCD. In this work, we consider a bottom-up soft-wall AdS-QCD model with broken ${\rm{SU}}(2)_L \times {\rm{SU}}(2)_R$ symmetry and we study the nature of the associated pseudo-Goldstone modes -- the pions. In particular, we perform a detailed investigation of their dispersion relation in presence of dissipation, of the role of the explicit breaking induced by the quark masses and of the dynamics near the critical point. Taking advantage of the microscopic information provided by the holographic model, we give quantitative predictions for all the coefficients appearing in the effective description. In particular, we estimate the finite temperature behavior of the kinetic parameter $\mathfrak{r^2}$ defined as the ration between the Goldstone diffusivity $D_φ$ and the pion attenuation constant $D_A$. Interestingly, we observe important deviations from the value $\mathfrak{r^2}=3/4$ computed in chiral perturbation theory in the limit of zero temperature.

Inhomogeneous chiral condensation under rotation in the holographic QCD

We investigate inhomogeneous chiral condensation under rotation considering finite size effects and boundary conditions in the holographic QCD model. The rotational suppression effect determined by $Ωr$ is confirmed in the holographic model which is not influenced by the boundary conditions. For chiral condensation at the center, it is found that under Neumann boundary condition the finite size exhibits two opposite effects, i.e., catalysis at high temperatures and inverse catalysis at low temperatures. In contrast, under Dirichlet boundary condition, the effect of finite size on condensation is inverse catalysis, and small size induces a phase transition from inhomogeneous to homogeneous phase. The temperature-angular velocity phase diagrams of QCD are obtained for different boundary conditions and sizes, and it is found that the critical temperature decreases with angular velocity.

Fermionic DIS from a deformed string/gauge correspondence model

From a deformed AdS$_5$ space, we used the string/gauge duality to study the deep inelastic scattering for unpolarized fermions with spin 1/2, considering the large Bjorken $x$ parameter regime. Here, we also took into account an anomalous dimension of an operator which represents fermions at the boundary. From this analysis, we compute the corresponding structure functions, which are dependent on $x$ and on the photon virtuality $q$. The results achieved are in agreement with the experimental data.

The dynamical holographic QCD method for hadron physics and QCD matter

In this paper we present a short overview on the dynamical holographic QCD method for hadron physics and QCD matter. The 5-dimensional dynamical holographic QCD model is constructed in the graviton-dilaton-scalar framework with the dilaton background field $Φ$ and the scalar field $X$ dual to the gluon condensate and the chiral condensate operator thus can represent the gluodynamics (linear confinement) and chiral dynamics (chiral symmetry breaking), respectively. The dilaton background field and the scalar field are a function of the 5th dimension, which plays the role of the energy scale, in this way, the DhQCD model can resemble the renormalization group from ultraviolet (UV) to infrared (IR). By solving the Einstein equation, the metric structure at IR is automatically deformed by the nonperturbative gluon condensation and chiral condensation in the vacuum. We review the results on the hadron spectra including the glueball spectra, the light/heavy meson spectra, as well as on QCD phase transitions, and thermodynamical as well as transport properties in the framework of the dynamical holographic QCD model.

Pion form factor from an AdS deformed background

We consider a bottom-up AdS/QCD model with a conformal exponential deformation $e^{k\,z^2}$ on a Lorentz invariant AdS background. In this model, we assume the conformal dimension associated with the operator that creates pions at the boundary as $Δ=3$. Regarding the infrared scale related to photon field $k_γ$, we analyze two cases: constant and depending on the transferred momentum $q$. In these two cases, we computed the electromagnetic pion form factor as well as the pion radius. We compare our results with experimental data as well as other theoretical (holographic and non-holographic) models. In particular, for the momentum-dependent infrared scale, we find good agreement with the available experimental data as well as non-holographic models.

Power-enhanced simultaneous test of high-dimensional mean vectors and covariance matrices with application to gene-set testing

Power-enhanced tests with high-dimensional data have received growing attention in theoretical and applied statistics in recent years. Existing tests possess their respective high-power regions, and we may lack prior knowledge about the alternatives when testing for a problem of interest in practice. There is a critical need of developing powerful testing procedures against more general alternatives. This paper studies the joint test of two-sample mean vectors and covariance matrices for high-dimensional data. We first expand the high-power region of high-dimensional mean tests or covariance tests to a wider alternative space and then combine their strengths together in the simultaneous test. We develop a new power-enhanced simultaneous test that is powerful to detect differences in either mean vectors or covariance matrices under either sparse or dense alternatives. We prove that the proposed testing procedures align with the power enhancement principles introduced by Fan et al. (2015) and achieve the accurate asymptotic size and consistent asymptotic power. We demonstrate the finite-sample performance using simulation studies and a real application to find differentially expressed gene-sets in cancer studies. Our findings in the empirical study are supported by the biological literature.

Proton and neutron form factors from deformed gravity/gauge duality

In this work, we study the electric and magnetic Sachs form factors for proton and neutron by using a deformed gravity/gauge model. We describe holographically baryons as well as gauge bosons which are ruled by the parameters $k_{B}$ and $k_γ$, associated with confinement and kinematical energy scales, respectively. Then, we construct the interaction action and calculate the electric and magnetic form factors for the proton and the neutron, and their electromagnetic sizes. The obtained results are compatible with those found in the literature from experimental and theoretical data.

Thermal properties of light mesons from holography

The thermal properties of light mesons, including the temperature dependence of their masses (both screening and pole masses) and thermal widths, are studied in a two-flavor ($N_f=2$) soft-wall AdS/QCD model. By solving the spatial correlation functions, we extract the screening masses ($m_{\rm{scr}}$) from their poles. The screening masses of pseudo-scalar ($π$) and axial-vector ($a_1$) mesons increase almost monotonously with the increase of temperature. The screening masses of scalar ($σ$) and vector ($ρ$) mesons decrease at low temperature and increase at high temperature. The pole masses ($m_{\rm{pole}}$) and the thermal widths ($Γ$) are extracted from the temporal correlation functions and the corresponding spectral functions. The results indicate that the pole masses have local minima at low temperature and increase at high temperature. The thermal widths increase rapidly above the chiral crossover temperature $T_{cp}$, indicating the dissociations of mesons at high temperature. Furthermore, the degeneration of the chiral partners ($π$ and $σ$, $ρ$ and $a_1$) above $T_{cp}$ is observed from the screening and pole masses, revealing the chiral symmetry restoration at the hadronic spectrum level. Finally, we numerically verify that the spectral functions in the temporal regime are strongly related to the quasi-normal modes with complex frequencies $ω_0=m_{\rm{pole}}-i Γ/2$.

Gluodynamics and deconfinement phase transition under rotation from holography

We investigate rotating effect on deconfinement phase transition in an Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton(EMD) model in bottom-up holographic QCD approach. By constructing a rotating black hole, which is supposed to be dual to rotating strongly coupled nuclear matter, we investigate the thermodynamic quantities, including entropy density, pressure, energy density, trace anomaly, sound speed and specific heat for both pure gluon system and two-flavor system under rotation. It is shown that those thermodynamic quantities would be enhanced by large angular velocity. Also, we extract the information of phase transition from those thermodynamic quantities, as well as the order parameter of deconfinement phase transition, i.e. the loop operators. It is shown that, in the $T - ω$ plane, for two-flavor case with small chemical potential, the phase transition is always crossover. The transition temperature decreases slowly with angular velocity and chemical potential. For pure gluon system with zero chemical potential, the phase transition is always first order, while at finite chemical potential a critical end point(CEP) will present in the $T - ω$ plane.

Finite density effects on chiral symmetry breaking in a magnetic field in 2+1 dimensions from holography

In this work we study finite density effects in spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking as well as chiral phase transition under the influence of a background magnetic field in $ 2+1 $ dimensions. For this purpose, we use an improved holographic softwall model based on an interpolated dilaton profile. We find inverse magnetic catalysis at finite density. We observe that the chiral condensate decreases as the density increases, and the two effects (addition of magnetic field and chemical potential) sum up decreasing even more the chiral condensate.

Proton Structure Functions from an AdS/QCD model with a deformed background

In this work we study unpolarized spin $1/2$ baryonic deep inelastic scattering (DIS) in the regime of large Bjorken parameter $x$. We calculate the corresponding structure functions $F_{1,2}(x,q^2)$. Our approach is based on an AdS/QCD model with a deformed background, where we consider an exponential factor in the AdS$_5$ metric. Such a deformation implies the introduction of an anomalous dimension in the model. Our results for the structure functions are consistent with those found in the literature from experimental data.
