Leafwise smoothing laminations

We show that every topological surface lamination of a 3-manifold M is isotopic to one with smoothly immersed leaves. This carries out a project proposed by Gabai in [Problems in foliations and laminations, AMS/IP Stud. Adv. Math. 2.2 1--33]. Consequently any such lamination admits the structure of a Riemann surface lamination, and therefore useful structure theorems of Candel [Uniformization of surface laminations, Ann. Sci. Ecole Norm. Sup. 26 (1993) 489--516] and Ghys [Dynamique et geometrie complexes, Panoramas et Syntheses 8 (1999)] apply.

Commensurability of 1-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds

We give examples of non-fibered hyperbolic knot complements in homology spheres that are not commensurable to fibered knot complements in homology spheres. In fact, we give many examples of knot complements in homology spheres with the property that every commensurable knot complement in a homology sphere has non-monic Alexander polynomial.

The Geometry of R-covered foliations

We study R-covered foliations of 3-manifolds from the point of view of their transverse geometry. For an R-covered foliation in an atoroidal 3-manifold M, we show that M-tilde can be partially compactified by a canonical cylinder S^1_univ x R on which pi_1(M) acts by elements of Homeo(S^1) x Homeo(R), where the S^1 factor is canonically identified with the circle at infinity of each leaf of F-tilde. We construct a pair of very full genuine laminations transverse to each other and to F, which bind every leaf of F. This pair of laminations can be blown down to give a transverse regulating pseudo-Anosov flow for F, analogous to Thurston's structure theorem for surface bundles over a circle with pseudo-Anosov monodromy. A corollary of the existence of this structure is that the underlying manifold M is homotopy rigid in the sense that a self-homeomorphism homotopic to the identity is isotopic to the identity. Furthermore, the product structures at infinity are rigid under deformations of the foliation F through R-covered foliations, in the sense that the representations of pi_1(M) in Homeo((S^1_univ)_t) are all conjugate for a family parameterized by t. Another corollary is that the ambient manifold has word-hyperbolic fundamental group. Finally we speculate on connections between these results and a program to prove the geometrization conjecture for tautly foliated 3-manifolds.

A note on strong geometric isolation in 3-orbifolds

Neumann and Reid described in their paper "Rigidity of cusps in deformations of hyperbolic 3-orbifolds" (Math Ann. 295 (1993) no. 2, 223--237) a 2-cusped hyperbolic 3-orbifold in which the cusps are geometrically isolated. Based on numerical evidence provided by Jeff Weeks' snappea program, they conjectured that the cusps are strongly geometrically isolated, a fact which we establish here. We also give a parameterization of the Dehn surgery space of this orbifold which has amusing properties.

Distortion of leaves in product foliations

We produce examples of codimension one foliations of the Euclidean and hyperbolic planes with bounded geometry which are topologically products, but for which leaves are non-recursively distorted. That is, the function which compares intrinsic distances in leaves with extrinsic distances in the ambient space grows faster than any recursive function.

Napoleon in isolation

Napoleon's theorem in elementary geometry describes how certain linear operations on plane polygons of arbitrary shape always produce regular polygons. More generally, certain triangulations of a polygon that tiles R^2 admit deformations which keep fixed the symmetry group of the tiling. This gives rise to isolation phenomena in cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds, where hyperbolic Dehn surgeries on some collection of cusps leaves the geometric structure at some other collection of cusps unchanged.

R-covered foliations of hyperbolic 3-manifolds

We produce examples of taut foliations of hyperbolic 3-manifolds which are R-covered but not uniform --- ie the leaf space of the universal cover is R, but pairs of leaves are not contained in bounded neighborhoods of each other. This answers in the negative a conjecture of Thurston `Three-manifolds, foliations and circles I' (math.GT/9712268). We further show that these foliations can be chosen to be C^0 close to foliations by closed surfaces. Our construction underscores the importance of the existence of transverse regulating vector fields and cone fields for R-covered foliations. Finally, we discuss the effect of perturbing arbitrary R-covered foliations.

A degree one Borsuk-Ulam theorem

We observe that the classical Borsuk-Ulam theorem has an easy generalization to maps from an n-manifold M^n to R^n. We point out a geometric corollary.

Foliations Transverse to Triangulations of 3-Manifolds

We investigate the combinatorial analogues, in the context of normal surfaces, of taut and transversely measured (codimension 1) foliations of 3-manifolds. We establish that the existence of certain combinatorial structures, a priori weaker than the existence of the corresponding foliation, is sufficient to guarantee that the manifold in question satisfies certain properties, e.g. irreducibility. The finiteness of our combinatorial structures allows us to make our results quantitative in nature and has (coarse) geometrical consequences for the manifold. Furthermore, our techniques give a straightforward combinatorial proof of Novikov's theorem.
