Resolving the Solar Neutrino Problem with KamLAND

We study how well KamLAND, the first terrestrial neutrino experiment capable of addressing the solar neutrino problem, will perform in ascertaining whether or not the large mixing angle MSW solution (with $10^{-5}<Δm_{21}^2< 10^{-4} eV^2$ and oscillation amplitude $sin^2 2 θ_{12}>0.3$) is correct. We find that in a year of operation KamLAND will provide unequivocal evidence for or against this solution. Furthermore, its sensitivity to the three-neutrino oscillation parameters in this region is sufficiently acute as to determine $Δm_{21}^2$ to approximately $\pm 10$ % (for $sin^2 2 θ_{12}>0.7$) and to fix $sin^2 2 θ_{12}$ to within $\pm 0.1$ (at the $2σ$ level) with three years of accumulated data, independent of the value of $θ_{13}$.

$h\to μτ$ at Hadron Colliders

We study the observability for a lepton flavor-changing decay of a Higgs boson $h\to μτ$ at hadron colliders. Flavor-changing couplings of a Higgs boson exist at tree level in models with multiple Higgs doublets. The $hμτ$ coupling is particularly motivated by the favorable intepretation of $ν_μ-ν_τ$ oscillation. We find that at the Tevatron Run II the unique $μτ$ signature could serve as the Higgs discovery channel, surpassing expectations for Higgs boson searches in the SM and in a large parameter region of the MSSM. The sensitivity will be greatly improved at the LHC, beyond the coverage at a muon collider Higgs factory.

Supernova data may be unable to distinguish between quintessence and k-essence

We consider the efficacy of using luminosity distance measurements of deep redshift supernovae to discriminate between two forms of dark energy, quintessence (a scalar field with canonical kinetic terms rolling down a potential) and k-essence (a scalar field whose cosmic evolution is driven entirely by non-linear kinetic terms). The primary phenomenological distinction between the two types of models that can be quantified by supernova searches (at least in principle) is that the equation of state $w\equiv p/ρ$ of quintessence is falling today while that of k-essence is rising. By simulating $10^5$ possible datasets that SNAP could obtain, we show that even if the mass density $Ω_m$ is known exactly, an ambiguity remains that may not allow a definitive distinction to be made between the two types of theories.

Oblique Parameter Constraints on Large Extra Dimensions

We consider the Kaluza-Klein scenario in which gravity propagates in the $4+n$ dimensional bulk of spacetime and the Standard Model particles are confined to a 3-brane. We calculate the gauge boson self-energy corrections arising from the exchange of virtual gravitons and present our results in the $STU$-formalism. We find that the new physics contributions to $S$, $T$ and $U$ decouple in the limit that the string scale $M_S$ goes to infinity. The oblique parameters constrain the lower limit on $M_S$. Taking the quantum gravity cutoff to be $M_S$, $S$-parameter constraints impose $M_S>1.55$ TeV for $n=2$ at the 1$σ$ level. $T$-parameter constraints impose $M_S>1.25 (0.75)$ TeV for $n=3 (6)$.

Cosmology and Hierarchy in Stabilized Randall-Sundrum Models

We consider the cosmology and hierarchy of scales in models with branes immersed in a five-dimensional curved spacetime subject to radion stabilization. The universe naturally find itself in the radiation-dominated epoch when the inter-brane spacing is static and stable, independent of the form of the stabilizing potential. We recover the standard Friedmann equations without assuming a specific form for the bulk energy-momentum tensor. We address the hierarchy problem in the context of a quartic and exponential stabilizing potential, and find that in either case the presence of a negative tension brane is required and that the string scale can be as low as the electroweak scale. In the situation of self-tuning branes (corresponding to an exponential potential) where the bulk cosmological constant is set to zero, the brane tensions have hierarchical values.

Brane Networks in AdS Space

We present static solutions to Einstein's equations corresponding to the most general network of $N$ orthogonal families of $(2+N)$-branes in $(4+N)$-dimensional $AdS$ spacetimes. The bulk cosmological constant can take a different value in each cell enclosed by intersecting branes and the extra dimensions can be compact or noncompact. In each family of branes the inter-brane spacing is arbitrary. The extra dimensions may be any or all of the manifolds, $R^1$, $R^1/Z_2$, $S^1$ and $S^1/Z_2$. Only when the extra dimensions are $R^1$ or/and $R^1/Z_2$, can networks consisting solely of positive tension branes be constructed. Such configurations may find application in models with localized gravity and symmetry breaking by shining.

A gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking model with an extra singlet Higgs field

We study in some detail the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model with gauge mediation of supersymmetry breaking. We find that it is feasible to spontaneously generate values of the Higgs mass parameters $μ$ and $B_μ$ consistent with radiative electroweak symmetry breaking. The model has a phenomenologically viable particle spectrum. Messenger sneutrinos with mass in the range 6 to 25 TeV can serve as cold dark matter. It is also possible to evade the cosmological domain wall problem in this scenario.
