Finite abelian subgroups of algebraic groups

Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field, and let $G$ be an algebraic $k$-group. We study finite abelian $k$-subgroups $A \subset G$ whose order is not divisible by the characteristic of $k$. This is a classical topic in the theory of algebraic groups going back to the work of Borel in the early 1960s. We sharpen previously known results on the structure of $A$. In particular, we show that there exists a maximal torus $T$ of $G$ such that the index $[A: (A \cap T)]$ divides the Grothendieck torsion index $t(G)$. We also show that there exists a maximal torus $T$ such that the quotient group $A/(A \cap T)$ is ``small'' in a suitable sense. As applications of these results, we (i) give a positive answer to a question of Totaro for $G$-torsors over fields $k_r = k((t_1))((t_2)) \ldots ((t_r))$ of iterated Laurent series, (ii) prove a variant of the ``hypoth\`ese optimiste'' of Tits about splitting fields of $E_8$-torsors, and (iii) show that certain torsors over $k_r$ cannot be split by the function field of a genus $1$ curve.

Lower bounds on the essential dimension of reductive groups

We introduce a technique for proving lower bounds on the essential dimension of split reductive groups. As an application, we strengthen the best previously known lower bounds for various split simple algebraic groups, most notably for the exceptional group $E_8$. In the case of the projective linear group $\operatorname{PGL}_n$, we recover A. Merkurjev's celebrated lower bound with a simplified proof. Our technique relies on decompositions of loop torsors over valued fields due to P. Gille and A. Pianzola.

Essential dimension of cohomology classes via valuation theory

We give a formula for the essential dimension of a cohomology class $\alpha$ in $H^d(K, \mathbb{Q}_p/\mathbb{Z}_p (d))$ when $K$ is a strictly Henselian field. This formula is particularly explicit in the case, where $\alpha$ is a Brauer class (for $d = 2$). As an application of our bound with $d = 3$, we study the essential dimension of exceptional groups by examining the image of the Rost invariant.

Reduction of Structure to Parabolic Subgroups

Let $G$ be an affine group over a field of characteristic not two. A $G$-torsor is called isotropic if it admits reduction of structure to a proper parabolic subgroup of $G$. This definition generalizes isotropy of affine groups and involutions of central simple algebras. When does $G$ admit anisotropic torsors? Building on work of J. Tits, we answer this question for simple groups. We also give an answer for connected and semisimple $G$ under certain restrictions on its root system.

Distance between reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces and geometry of finite sets in the unit ball

In this paper we study the relationships between a reproducing kernel Hilbert space, its multiplier algebra, and the geometry of the point set on which they live. We introduce a variant of the Banach-Mazur distance suited for measuring the distance between reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces, that quantifies how far two spaces are from being isometrically isomorphic as reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. We introduce an analogous distance for multiplier algebras, that quantifies how far two algebras are from being completely isometrically isomorphic. We show that, in the setting of finite dimensional quotients of the Drury-Arveson space, two spaces are "close" to one another if and only if their multiplier algebras are "close", and that this happens if and only if the underlying point-sets are "almost congruent", meaning that one of the sets is very close to an image of the other under a biholomorphic automorphism of the unit ball. These equivalences are obtained as corollaries of quantitative estimates that we prove.

Three Classification Results In The Theory Of Weighted Hardy Spaces On The Ball

We present a natural family of Hilbert function spaces on the d-dimensional complex unit ball and classify which of them satisfy that subsets of the ball yield isometrically isomorphic subspaces if and only if there is an analytic automorphism of the ball taking one to the other. We also characterize pairs of weighted Hardy spaces on the unit disk which are isomorphic via a composition operator by a simple criterion on their respective sequences of weights.
