Thermodynamics of Ising Spins on the Star Lattice

There is a new class of two-dimensional magnetic materials polymeric iron (III) acetate fabricated recently in which Fe ions form a star lattice. We study the thermodynamics of Ising spins on the star lattice with exact analytic method and Monte Carlo simulations. Mapping the star lattice to the honeycomb lattice, we obtain the partition function for the system with asymmetric interactions. The free energy, internal energy, specific heat, entropy and susceptibility are presented, which can be used to determine the sign of the interactions in the real materials. Moreover, we find the rich phase diagrams of the system as a function of interactions, temperature and external magnetic field. For frustrated interactions without external field, the ground state is disordered (spin liquid) with residual entropy 1.522 per unit cell. When a weak field is applied, the system enters a ferrimagnetic phase with residual entropy ln4 per unit cell.

Tunable nano Peltier cooling device from geometric effects using a single graphene nanoribbon

Based on the phenomenon of curvature-induced doping in graphene we propose a class of Peltier cooling devices, produced by geometrical effects, without gating. We show how a graphene nanorib- bon laid on an array of curved nano cylinders can be used to create a targeted and tunable cooling device. Using two different approaches, the Nonequlibrium Green's Function (NEGF) method and experimental inputs, we predict that the cooling power of such a device can approach the order of kW/cm2, on par with the best known techniques using standard superlattice structures. The struc- ture proposed here helps pave the way toward designing graphene electronics which use geometry rather than gating to control devices.

Spin transport in the Neel and collinear antiferromagnetic phase of the two dimensional spatial and spin anisotropic Heisenberg model on a square lattice

We analyze and compare the effect of spatial and spin anisotropy on spin conductivity in a two dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg quantum magnet on a square lattice. We explore the model in both the Neel antiferromagnetic (AF) phase and the collinear antiferromagnetic (CAF) phase. We find that in contrast to the effects of spin anisotropy in the Heisenberg model, spatial anisotropy in the AF phase does not suppress the zero temperature regular part of the spin conductivity in the zero frequency limit - rather it enhances it. We also explore the finite temperature effects on the Drude weight in the AF phase for various spatial and spin anisotropy parameters. We find that the Drude weight goes to zero as the temperature approaches zero. At finite temperatures (within the collision less approximation) enhancing spatial anisotropy increases the Drude weight value and increasing spin anisotropy decreases the Drude weight value. In the CAF phase (within the non-interacting approximation) the zero frequency spin conductivity has a finite value for non-zero values of the spatial anisotropy parameter. In the CAF phase increasing the spatial anisotropy parameter suppresses the regular part of the spin conductivity response at zero frequency. Furthermore, we find that the CAF phase displays a spike in the spin conductivity not seen in the AF phase. Inclusion of the smallest amount of spin anisotropy causes a gap to develop in the spin conductivity response of both the AF and CAF phase. Based on these studies we conclude that materials with spatial anisotropy are better spin conductors than those with spin anisotropy both at zero and finite temperatures. We utilize exchange parameter ratios for real material systems as inputs to the computation of spin conductivity.

Quantum computation with two-dimensional graphene quantum dots

We study an array of graphene nano sheets that form a two-dimensional S = 1/2 Kagome spin lattice used for quantum computation. The edge states of the graphene nano sheets are used to form quantum dots to confine electrons and perform the computation. We propose two schemes of bang-bang control to combat decoherence and realize gate operations on this array of quantum dots. It is shown that both schemes contain a great amount of information for quantum computation. The corresponding gate operations are also proposed.

Edge states and topological orders in the spin liquid phases of star lattice

A group of novel materials can be mapped to the star lattice, which exhibits some novel physical properties. We give the bulk-edge correspondence theory of the star lattice and study the edge states and their topological orders in different spin liquid phases. The bulk and edge-state energy structures and Chern number depend on the spin liquid phases and hopping parameters because the local spontaneous magnetic flux in the spin liquid phase breaks the time reversal and space inversion symmetries. We give the characteristics of bulk and edge energy structures and their corresponding Chern numbers in the uniform, nematic and chiral spin liquids. In particular, we obtain analytically the phase diagram of the topological orders for the chiral spin liquid states SL[ϕ,ϕ,-2ϕ], where ϕis the magnetic flux in two triangles and a dodecagon in the unit cell. Moreover, we find the topological invariance for the spin liquid phases, SL[ϕ_{1},ϕ_{2},-(ϕ_{1}+ϕ_{2})] and SL[ϕ_{2},ϕ_{1},-(ϕ_{1}+ϕ_{2})]. The results reveal the relationship between the energy-band and edge-state structures and their topological orders of the star lattice.

Kondo Metal and Ferrimagnetic Insulator on the Triangular Kagomé Lattice

We obtain the rich phase diagrams in the Hubbard model on the triangular Kagomé lattice as a function of interaction, temperature and asymmetry, by combining the cellular dynamical mean-field theory with the continuous time quantum Monte Carlo method. The phase diagrams show the asymmetry separates the critical points in Mott transition of two sublattices on the triangular Kagomé lattice and produces two novel phases called plaquette insulator with an obvious gap and a gapless Kondo metal. When the Coulomb interaction is stronger than the critical value Uc, a short range paramagnetic insulating phase, which is a candidate for the short rang resonating valence-bond spin liquid, emerges before the ferrimagnetic order is formed independent of asymmetry. Furthermore, we discuss how to measure these phases in future experiments.

Constraining the interaction strength between dark matter and visible matter: II. scalar, vector and spin-3/2 dark matter

We investigate the constraints on the scalar, vector and spin-3/2 dark matter interaction with the standard model particles, from the observations of dark matter relic density, the direct detection experiments of CDMS and XENON, and the indirect detection of the antiproton-to-proton ratio by PAMELA. A model independent way is adopted by constructing general 4-particle operators up to dimension 6 for the effective interaction between dark matter and standard model particles. We find that the constraints from different experiments are complementary with each other. Comparison among these constraints may exclude some effective models of dark matter and limit some parameters of others. The spin-independent direct detection gives strong constraints for some operators, while the indirect detection of antiproton-to-proton data can be more sensitive than direct detection or relic density for light dark matter (whose mass less than 70 GeV) in some cases. The constraints on some operators for spin-3/2 dark matter are shown to be similar to those on their analogous operators for Dirac fermionic dark matter. There are still some operators not sensitive to the current dark matter direct and indirect search experiments.

Spin wave theory study of neutron intensity, magnetic field, and anisotropy of Type IIA FCC antiferromagnet

We study the spin dynamics in a 3D quantum antiferromagnet on a face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice. The effects of magnetic field, single-ion anisotropy, and biquadratic interactions are investigated using linear spin wave theory with spins in a canted basis about the Type IIA FCC antiferromagnetic ground state structure which is known to be stable. We calculate the expected finite frequency neutron scattering intensity and give qualitative criteria for typical FCC materials MnO and CoO. The magnetization reduction due to quantum zero point fluctuations is also analyzed.

Pulse control of sudden transition for two qubits in XY spin baths and quantum phase transition

We study the dynamics of two initially correlated qubits coupled to their own separate spin baths modeled by a XY spin chain and find the explicit expression of the quantum discord for the system. A sudden transition is found to exist between classical and quantum decoherence by choosing certain initial states. We show that the sudden transition happens near the critical point, which provides a new way to characterize the quantum phase transition. Furthermore, we propose a scheme to prolong the transition time of the quantum discord by applying the bang-bang pulses.

Femtosecond Laser-induced Crystallization of Amorphous Sb2Te3 film and Coherent Phonon Spectroscopy Characterization and Optical Injection of Electron Spins

A femtosecond laser-irradiated crystallizing technique is tried to convert amorphous Sb2Te3 film into crystalline film. Sensitive coherent phonon spectroscopy (CPS) is used to monitor the crystallization of amorphous Sb2Te3 film at the original irradiation site. The CPS reveals that the vibration strength of two phonon modes that correspond to the characteristic phonon modes of crystalline Sb2Te3, enhances with increasing laser irradiation fluence (LIF), showing the rise of the degree of crystallization with LIF and that femtosecond laser irradiation is a good post-treatment technique. Time-resolved circularly polarized pump-probe spectroscopy is used to investigate electron spin relaxation dynamics of the laser-induced crystallized Sb2Te3 film. Spin relaxation process indeed is observed, confirming the theoretical predictions on the validity of spin-dependent optical transition selection rule and the feasibility of transient spin-grating-based optical detection scheme of spin-plasmon collective modes in Sb2Te3-like topological insulators.

Study of the magnetic state of K$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$ using the five-orbital Hubbard model in the Hartree-Fock approximation

Motivated by the recent discovery of Fe-based superconductors close to an antiferromagnetic insulator in the experimental phase diagram, here the five-orbital Hubbard model (without lattice distortions) is studied using the real-space Hartree-Fock approximation, employing a 10x10 Fe cluster with Fe vacancies in a $\sqrt{5}x\sqrt{5}$ pattern. Varying the Hubbard and Hund couplings, and at electronic density $n$=6.0, the phase diagram contains an insulating state with the same spin pattern as observed experimentally, involving 2x2 ferromagnetic plaquettes coupled with one another antiferromagnetically. The presence of local ferromagnetic tendencies is in qualitative agreement with Lanczos results for the three-orbital model also reported here. The magnetic moment ~ 3$μ_B$/Fe is in good agreement with experiments. Several other phases are also stabilized in the phase diagram, in agreement with recent calculations using phenomenological models.

Spin Waves and magnetic exchange interactions in insulating Rb$_{0.89}$Fe$_{1.58}$Se$_2$

The discovery of alkaline iron selenide $A$Fe$_{1.6+x}$Se$_2$ ($A=$ K, Rb, Cs) superconductors has generated considerable excitement in the condensed matter physics community because superconductivity in these materials may have a different origin from the sign reversed s-wave electron pairing mechanism, a leading candidate proposed for all other Fe-based superconductors. Although $A$Fe$_{1.6+x}$Se$_2$ are isostructural with the metallic antiferromagnetic (AF) iron pnictides such as (Ba,Ca,Sr)Fe$_2$As$_2$, they are insulators near $x=0$ and form a $\sqrt{5}\times\sqrt{5}$ blocked AF structure (Fig. 1a) completely different from the iron pnictides. If magnetism is responsible for superconductivity of all iron-based materials, it is important to determine their common magnetic features. Here we use neutron scattering to map out spin waves in the AF insulating Rb$_{0.89}$Fe$_{1.58}$Se$_2$. We find that although Rb$_{0.89}$Fe$_{1.58}$Se$_2$ has a N$\rm \acute{e}$el temperature ($T_N=475$ K) much higher than that of the iron pnictides ($T_N\leq 220$ K), spin waves for both classes of materials have similar zone boundary energies. A comparison of the fitted effective exchange couplings using a local moment Heisenberg Hamiltonian in Rb$_{0.89}$Fe$_{1.58}$Se$_2$, (Ba,Ca,Sr)Fe$_2$As$_2$, and iron chalcogenide Fe$_{1.05}$Te reveals that their next nearest neighbor (NNN) exchange couplings are similar. Therefore, superconductivity in all Fe-based materials may have a common magnetic origin that is intimately associated with the NNN magnetic exchange interactions, even though they have metallic or insulating ground states, different AF orders and electronic band structures.

Sudden transition between classical and quantum decoherence in dissipative cavity QED and stationary quantum discord

We investigate the phenomenon of sudden transition between classical and quantum decoherence in the study of quantum discord for a dissipative cavity QED system, which consists of two noninteracting two-level atoms, each trapped in a dissipative cavity. It is found that the quantum discord between two atoms, which are prepared initially in the X-type quantum states, is not destroyed by the dissipation of the cavities for a finite time interval and the stationary quantum discord can arise in the interaction of atoms with cavities as the time approach to infinite. The transition time is sensitive to the initial state parameter of the two atoms and the mean photon number of the coherent field. Interestingly, the quantum discord between the two atoms is completely unaffected by the dissipation of the cavities if we choose the suitable value of the ratio, which depends on the decay rate of two cavities and the atom-field coupling constant.

23Na and 75As NMR Study of Antiferromagnetism and Spin Fluctuations on NaFeAs Single Crystals

We report the $^{23}$Na and $^{75}$As NMR studies on NaFeAs single crystals. The structure transition temperature $T_S$ (55 K) and the spin density wave (SDW) transition temperature $T_{SDW}$ (40.5 K) are determined by the NMR line splits. The spin-lattice relaxation rates indicate that the spin fluctuations are strongly enhanced just below $T_S$ and drive a second order SDW transition. A fluctuating feature of the SDW ordering is also seen below the $T_{SDW}$. We further performed high-pressure NMR studies on NaFeAs, and found that the $T_{SDW}$ increases by $\sim$7 K and the magnetic moment increases by 30% under 2.5 GPa pressure.

Charge Stripes in the Two-Orbital Hubbard Model for Pnictides

The two-orbital Hubbard model for the pnictides is studied numerically using the real-space Hartree-Fock approximation on finite clusters. Upon electron doping, states with a nonuniform distribution of charge are stabilized. The observed patterns correspond to charge stripes oriented perpendicular to the direction of the spin stripes of the undoped magnetic ground state. While these charge striped states are robust when the undoped state has a Hubbard gap, their existence when the intermediate-coupling magnetic metallic state of pnictides is doped was also observed for particular model parameters. Results for hole doping and implications for recent experiments that reported electronic nematic states and spin incommensurability are also briefly discussed.

Electrically controllable surface magnetism on the surface of topological insulator

We study theoretically the RKKY interaction between magnetic impurities on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators, mediated by the helical Dirac electrons. Exact analytical expression shows that the RKKY interaction consists of the Heisenberg-like, Ising-like and DM-like terms. It provides us a new way to control surface magnetism electrically. The gap opened by doped magnetic ions can lead to a short-range Bloembergen-Rowland interaction. The competition among the Heisenberg, Ising and DM terms leads to rich spin configurations and anomalous Hall effect on different lattices.

Neutron and ARPES Constraints on the Couplings of the Multiorbital Hubbard Model for the Pnictides

The results of neutron scattering and angle-resolved photoemission experiments for the Fe-pnictide parent compounds, and their metallic nature, are shown to impose severe constraints on the range of values that can be considered "realistic" for the intraorbital Hubbard repulsion U and Hund coupling J in multiorbital Hubbard models treated in the mean-field approximation. Phase diagrams for three- and five-orbital models are here provided, and the physically realistic regime of couplings is highlighted, to guide future theoretical work into the proper region of parameters of Hubbard models. In addition, using the random phase approximation, the pairing tendencies in these realistic coupling regions are investigated. It is shown that the dominant spin-singlet pairing channels in these coupling regimes correspond to nodal superconductivity, with strong competition between several states that belong to different irreducible representations. This is compatible with experimental bulk measurements that have reported the existence of nodes in several Fe-pnictide compounds.

Quantum phase transitions in disordered dimerized quantum spin models and the Harris criterion

We use quantum Monte Carlo simulations to study effects of disorder on the quantum phase transition occurring versus the ratio g=J/J' in square-lattice dimerized S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets with intra- and inter-dimer couplings J and J'. The dimers are either randomly distributed (as in the classical dimer model), or come in parallel pairs with horizontal or vertical orientation. In both cases the transition violates the Harris criterion, according to which the correlation-length exponent should satisfy nu >= 1. We do not detect any deviations from the three-dimensional O(3) universality class obtaining in the absence of disorder (where nu = 0.71). We discuss special circumstances which allow nu<1 for the type of disorder considered here.
