Nonanalyticity of circuit complexity across topological phase transitions

The presence of nonanalyticity in observables is a manifestation of phase transitions. Through the study of two paradigmatic topological models in one and two dimensions, in this work we show that the circuit complexity based on our specific quantification can reveal the occurrence of topological phase transitions, both in and out of equilibrium, by the presence of nonanalyticity. By quenching the system out of equilibrium, we find that the circuit complexity grows linearly or quadratically in the short-time regime if the quench is finished instantaneously or in a finite time, respectively. Notably, we find that for both the sudden quench and the finite-time quench, a topological phase transition in the pre-quench Hamiltonian will be manifested by the presence of nonanalyticity in the first-order or second-order derivative of circuit complexity with respect to time in the short-time regime, and a topological phase transition in the post-quench Hamiltonian will be manifested by the presence of nonanalyticity in the steady value of circuit complexity in the long-time regime. We also show that the increase of dimension does not remove, but only weakens the nonanalyticity of circuit complexity. Our findings can be tested in quantum simulators and cold-atom systems.

Magnetic ordering and spin dynamics in $S=5/2$ staggered triangular lattice antiferromagnet Ba$_2$MnTeO$_6$

We report studies of the magnetic properties of a staggered stacked triangular lattice Ba$_2$MnTeO$_6$ using magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, neutron powder diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering measurements, as well as first principles density functional theory calculations. Neutron diffraction measurements reveal an antiferromagnetic order with a propagated vector $\textbf{\emph{k}}=(0.5, 0.5, 0)$ and N{é}el transition temperature of $T_\text{N}\approx20$ K. The dominant interaction derived from the Curie-Weiss fitting to the inverse DC susceptibility is antiferromagnetic. Through modelling the INS spectrum with the linear spin wave theory, the magnetic exchange interactions for the nearest intralayer, nearest interlayer, and next nearest interlayer are determined to be $J_1=0.27(3),J_2=0.27(3),$ and $J_3=-0.05(1)$ meV, respectively, and a small value of easy-axis anisotropy of $D_{zz}=-0.01$ meV is introduced. We derive a magnetic phase diagram that reveals that it is the competition between $J_1, J_2$, and $J_3$ that stabilizes the collinear stripe-type antiferromagnetic order.

Charge density wave and superconductivity in the family of telluride chalcogenides Zn1-xCuxIr2-yN(N = Al, Ti, Rh)yTe4

The interplay between superconductivity and charge density wave (CDW)/metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) has long been interested and studied in condensed matter physics. Here we study systematically the charge density wave and superconductivity properties in the solid solutions Zn1-xCuxIr2-yN(N = Al, Ti, Rh)yTe4. Resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements indicate that the CDW state was suppressed immediately while the superconducting critical temperature (Tc) differs from each system. In the Al- and Ti-substitution cases, Tc increase as y increases and reaches a maximum around 2.75 K and 2.84 K respectively at y = 0.075, followed by a decrease of Tc before the chemical phase boundary is reached at y = 0.2. Nevertheless, Tc decreases monotonously with Rh-doping content y increases and disappears above 0.3 with measuring temperature down to 2 K. Surprisingly, in the Zn1-xCuxIr2Te4 solid solution, Tc enhances as x increases and reaches a maximum value of 2.82 K for x = 0.5 but subsequently survives over the whole doping range of 0.00 - 0.9 despite Tc changes slightly with higher doping content, which differs from the observation of zinc doping suppressing the superconductivity quickly in the high Tc cuprate superconductors. The specific heat anomaly at the superconducting transitions for the representative optimal doping samples are all slightly higher than the BCS value of 1.43 and indicate bulk superconductivity in these compounds. Finally, the CDW transition temperature (TCDW) and superconducting transition temperature (Tc) vs. x/y content phase diagrams of Zn1-xCuxIr2-yN(N = Al, Ti, Rh)yTe4 have been established and compared, which offers good opportunity to study the competition between CDW and superconductivity in the telluride chalcogenides.

Dynamical spin excitations of topological Haldane gapped phase in the $S=1$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with single-ion anisotropy

We study the dynamical spin excitations of the one-dimensional $S=1$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with single-ion anisotropy by using quantum Monte Carlo simulations and stochastic analytic continuation of imaginary-time correlation function. Using the transverse dynamic spin structure factor, we observe the quantum phase transition with a critical point between the topological Haldane gapped phase and the trivial phase. At the quantum critical point, we find a broad continuum characterized by the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid similar to a $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain. We further identify that the elementary excitations are fractionalized spinons.

$K$ -edge and $L_{3}$ -edge RIXS study of columnar and staggered quantum dimer phases of the square lattice Heisenberg model

We compute the $K$ and $L_{3}$ -edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectrum of the columnar and the staggered quantum dimer states accessible to the square lattice Heisenberg magnet. Utilizing a bond operator representation mean field theory we investigate the RIXS features of the one- and two-triplon excitation spectrum supported by the quantum dimer model in the background of condensed singlet excitation. We find that the two-triplon excitation boundary lies within a 124 (78) meV to (414) 345 meV energy range for the columnar (staggered) phase. We estimated the two-triplon gap to be 124 (78) meV for the columnar (staggered) dimer phase. The highest intensity of the $K$ -edge RIXS spectrum is centralized approximately around the $(π/2,π/2)$ point for both the columnar and the staggered phases. At the $L_{3}$ -edge we study the one- and two- triplon signal considering experimental scattering geometry, polarization restriction, and experimental resolution effects. Our calculations find an additional contribution to the two-triplon RIXS signal, not previously reported in the literature, that originates from the local hard-core dimer constraint. This leads to a finite non-zero signal at the (0,0) momentum transfer which can offer an explanation for the existing ladder RIXS experiments and also predicts a non-zero signal for the two-dimensional quantum dimer system. We find that the $L_3$ edge RIXS response of the one- and two-triplon signal could exist in antiphase rung modulation for zero and $π$ as found in inelastic neutron scattering. We also consider static crystal twinning at the $L_3$ -edge RIXS signal to mimic realistic crystal effects. Since the disordered phase has the potential to harbor a variety of quantum paramagnetic states, our RIXS calculations provide useful signatures to identify the true nature of the ordering pattern.

Deconfined quantum criticality in spin-1/2 chains with long-range interactions

We study spin-$1/2$ chains with long-range power-law decaying unfrustrated (bipartite) Heisenberg exchange $J_r \propto r^{-α}$ and multi-spin interactions $Q$ favoring a valence-bond solid (VBS) ground state. Employing quantum Monte Carlo techniques and Lanczos diagonalization, we analyze order parameters and excited-state level crossings to characterize quantum states and phase transitions in the $(α,Q)$ plane. For weak $Q$ and sufficiently slowly decaying Heisenberg interactions (small $α$), the system has a long-range-ordered antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state, and upon increasing $α$ there is a continuous transition into a quasi long-range ordered (QLRO) critical state of the type in the standard Heisenberg chain. For rapidly decaying long-range interactions, there is transition between QLRO and VBS ground states of the same kind as in the frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg chain. Our most important finding is a direct continuous quantum phase transition between the AFM and VBS states - a close analogy to the 2D deconfined quantum-critical point. In previous 1D analogies the ordered phases both have gapped fractional excitations, and the critical point is a conventional Luttinger Liquid. In our model the excitations fractionalize upon transitioning from the AFM state, changing from spin waves to deconfined spinons. We extract critical exponents at the AFM-VBS transition and use order-parameter distributions to study emergent symmetries. We find emergent O($4$) symmetry of the O($3$) AFM and scalar VBS order parameters. Thus, the order parameter fluctuations exhibit the covariance of a uniaxially deformed O($4$) sphere (an "elliptical" symmetry). This unusual quantum phase transition does not yet have any known field theory description, and our detailed results can serve to guide its construction. We discuss possible experimental realizations.

Pressure-induced superconductivity and structural transition in ferromagnetic Cr2Si2Te6

The discovery of intrinsic magnetism in atomically thin two-dimensional transition-metal trichalcogenides has attracted intense research interest due to the exotic properties of magnetism and potential applications in devices. Pressure has proven to be an effective tool to manipulate the crystal and electronic structures of the materials. Here, we report investigations on ferromagnetic van der Waals Cr2Si2Te6 via high-pressure synchrotron x-ray diffraction, electrical resistance, Hall resistance, and magnetoresistance measurements. Under compression, Cr2Si2Te6 simultaneously undergoes a structural transition, emergence of superconductivity at 3 K, sign change of the magnetoresistance, and dramatic change of the Hall coefficient at ~8 GPa. The superconductivity persists up to the highest measured pressure of 47.1 GPa with a maximum Tc = 4.5 K at ~30 GPa. The discovery of superconductivity in the two-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnetic Cr-based Cr2Si2Te6 provides new perspectives to explore superconductivity and the interplay between superconductivity and magnetism.

Multimorphism and gap opening of charge-density-wave phases in monolayer VTe2

Vanadium dichalcogenides have attracted increasing interests for the charge density wave phenomena and possible ferromagnetism. Here, we report on the multiphase behavior and gap opening in monolayer VTe2 grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy study revealed the (4*4) metallic and gapped (2root3*2root3)charge-density wave pahses with an energy gap of ~40 meV. Through the in-plane condensation of vanadium atoms, the typical star-of-David clusters and truncated triangle-shaped clusters are formed in (4*4) and (2root3*2root3) phases respectively, resulting in different surface morphologies and electronic structures as confirmed by density functional theory calculations with on-site coulomb repulsion. The CDW-driven reorganization of the atomic structure weakens the ferromagnetic superexchange coupling and strengthens the antiferromagnetic exchange coupling on the contrary, suppressing the long-range magnetic order in monolayer VTe2.

Large negative magnetoresistance in the new antiferromagnetic rare-earth dichalcogenide EuTe$_2$

We report the synthesis and characterization of a rare-earth dichalcogenide EuTe$_2$. An antiferromagnetic transition was found at T$_M$ = 11 K. The antiferromagnetic order can be tuned by an applied magnetic field to access a first-order spin flop transition and a spin flip transition. These transitions are associated with a giant negative magnetoresistance with a value of nearly 100\%. Heat capacity measurements reveal strong electronic correlations and a reduced magnetic entropy. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the electrons near the Fermi surface mainly originate from the Te 5$p$ orbitals and the magnetism is dominated by localized electrons from the Eu 4$f$ orbitals. These results suggest that both the RKKY and Kondo interactions between the local moments and itinerant electrons play crucial roles in the magnetism and large negative magnetoresistance of EuTe$_2$.

Klein tunneling of Weyl magnons

Similar to Weyl semimetals, in magnetic materials, magnon bands can host Weyl points, around which the bosonic excitations are called Weyl magnons. Here, we investigate the Klein tunneling of Weyl magnons, during the process of which Weyl magnons tunnel through a high potential barrier. Specifically, we study the magnetization current carried by Weyl magnons in a quasi-one-dimensional magnetic wire, in the middle of which a gate magnetic field is applied to generate a potential barrier. The transmission probability is calculated and the Landauer-Büttiker formalism is used to find the magnetization current. Various types of Weyl magnons are considered, including isotropic, tilted, and double Weyl magnons. Unlike in Weyl semimetals where fermionic statistics is in charge and the current oscillates with the gate field as a result of Fabry-Pérot resonances, here Bose distribution smears out the oscillations. We find that the tilting of the Weyl cone causes the decrease of the magnetization current from Klein tunneling, while for double Weyl magnons, Klein tunneling is absent in the direction of quadratic dispersion, but is enhanced in the direction of linear dispersion. Our results show that the behaviour of the current-voltage characteristics of magnons is rather different from that of electrons due to different statistics, although the single-particle properties, such as the transmission probabilities, are the same for both Weyl bosons and Weyl fermions.

Detecting Crystallographic Lattice Chirality using Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

The control and detection of crystallographic chirality is an important and challenging scientific problem. Chirality has wide ranging implications from medical physics to cosmology including an intimate but subtle connection in magnetic systems, for example Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Si. X-ray diffraction techniques with resonant or polarized variations of the experimental setup are currently utilized to characterize lattice chirality. We demonstrate using theoretical calculations the feasibility of indirect $K$ -edge bimagnon resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectrum as a viable experimental technique to distinguish crystallographic handedness. We apply spin wave theory to the recently discovered $\sqrt {5}\times\sqrt {5}$ vacancy ordered chalcogenide Rb$_{0.89}$Fe$_{1.58}$Se$_{2}$ for realistic X-ray experimental set up parameters (incoming energy, polarization, and Bragg angle) to show that the computed RIXS spectrum is sensitive to the underlying handedness (right or left) of the lattice. A Flack parameter definition that incorporates the right- and left- chiral lattice RIXS response is introduced. It is shown that the RIXS response of the multiband magnon system RbFeSe arises both from inter- and intra- band scattering processes. The extinction or survival of these RIXS peaks are sensitive to the underlying chiral lattice orientation. This in turn allows for the identification of the two chiral lattice orientations.

CuIr2Te4: A Quasi-Two-Dimensional Ternary Telluride Chalcogenide Superconductor

Here we report the first observation of superconductivity in the AB2X4-type ternary telluride CuIr2Te4, which is synthesized by a solid-state method in an evacuated quartz jacket. It adopts a disordered trigonal structure with space group P3m1 (No. 164), which embodies a two-dimensional IrTe2 layers and intercalated by Cu between the layers. We use a combination of experimental and first principles calculation analysis to look insight into the structural and physical properties. CuIr2Te4 consistently exhibited a bulk superconductivity transition at 2.5 K in electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements. Resistivity and magnetization measurements suggest a charge density wave transition (TCDW = 250 K) coexists in CuIr2Te4, which further signify the coexistence of superconductivity and CDW in the ternary telluride chalcogenide CuIr2Te4. Our discovery of the new CDW-bearing superconductor CuIr2Te4 opens a door for experimental and theoretical studies of the interplay between CDW and superconductivity quantum state in the condensed matter field.

NbSeTe -A New Layered Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Superconductor

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) usually exhibit layered polytypic structures due to the weak interlayer coupling. 2H-NbSe2 is one of the most widely studied in the pristine TMDC family due to its high superconducting transition temperature (Tc = 7.3K) and the occurrence of a charge-density wave (CDW) order below 33 K. The coexistence of CDW with superconductivity poses an intriguing open question about the relationship between Fermi surface nesting and Cooper pairing. Past studies of this issue have mostly been focused on doping 2H-NbSe2 by 3d transition metals without significantly changing its crystal structure. Here we replaced the Se by Te in 2H-NbSe2 in order to design a new 1T polytype layered TMDC NbSeTe, which adopts a trigonal structure with space group P-3m1. We successfully grew large size and high-quality single crystals of 1T-NbSeTe via the vapor transport method using I2 as the transport agent. Temperature-dependent resistivity and specific heat data revealed a bulk Tc at 1.3 K, which is the first observation of superconductivity in pure 1T-NbSeTe phase. This compound enlarged the family of superconducting TMDCs and provides an opportunity to study the interplay between CDW and superconductivity in the trigonal structure.

Topological phase transition induced by magnetic proximity effect in two dimensions

We study the magnetic proximity effect on a two-dimensional topological insulator in a CrI$_3$/SnI$_3$/CrI$_3$ trilayer structure. From first-principles calculations, the BiI$_3$-type SnI$_3$ monolayer without spin-orbit coupling has Dirac cones at the corners of the hexagonal Brillouin zone. With spin-orbit coupling turned on, it becomes a topological insulator, as revealed by a non-vanishing $Z_2$ invariant and an effective model from symmetry considerations. Without spin-orbit coupling, the Dirac points are protected if the CrI$_3$ layers are stacked ferromagnetically, and are gapped if the CrI$_3$ layers are stacked antiferromagnetically, which can be explained by the irreducible representations of the magnetic space groups $C_{3i}^1$ and $C_{3i}^1(C_3^1)$, corresponding to ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic stacking, respectively. By analyzing the effective model including the perturbations, we find that the competition between the magnetic proximity effect and spin-orbit coupling leads to a topological phase transition between a trivial insulator and a topological insulator.

Criticality and scaling corrections for two-dimensional Heisenberg models in plaquette patterns with strong and weak couplings

We use the stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo method to study the Heisenberg models on the square lattice with strong and weak couplings in the form of three different plaquette arrangements known as checkerboard models C$2\times2$, C$2\times4$ and C$4\times4$. The $a\times b$ here stands for the shape of plaquette consisting with spins connected by strong couplings. Through detailed analysis of finite-size scaling study, the critical point of C$2\times2$ model is improved as $g_{c}=0.548524(3)$ compared with previous studies with $g$ to be the ratio of weak and strong couplings in the models. For C$2\times4$ and C$4\times4$ we give $g_{c}=0.456978(2)$ and $0.314451(3)$. We also study the critical exponents $ν$, $η$, and the universal property of Binder ratio to give further evidence that all quantum phase transitions in these three models are in the three-dimensional O(3) universality class. Furthermore, our fitting results show the importance of effective corrections in the scaling study of these models.

Single-orbital realization of high-temperature $s^\pm$ superconductivity in the square-octagon lattice

We propose possible high-temperature superconductivity (SC) with singlet $s^\pm$-wave pairing symmetry in the single-orbital Hubbard model on the square-octagon lattice with only nearest-neighbor hopping terms. Three different approaches are engaged to treat with the interacting model for different coupling strengths, which yield consistent result for the $s^\pm$ pairing symmetry. We propose octagraphene, i.e., a monolayer of carbon atoms arranged into this lattice, as a possible material realization of this model. Our variational Monte Carlo study for the material with realistic coupling strength yields a pairing strength comparable with the cuprates, implying a similar superconducting critical temperature between the two families. This study also applies to other materials with similar lattice structure.

Imbert-Fedorov shift in pseudospin-$N/2$ semimetals and nodal-line semimetals

The Imbert-Fedorov (IF) shift is the transverse shift of a beam at a surface or an interface. It is a manifestation of the three-component Berry curvature in three dimensions, and has been studied in optical systems and Weyl semimetals. Here we investigate the IF shift in two types of topological systems, topological semimetals with pseudospin-$N/2$ for an arbitrary integer $N$, and nodal-line semimetals (NLSMs). For the former, we find the IF shift depends on the components of the pseudospin, with the sign depending on the chirality. We term this phenomenon the pseudospin Hall effect of topological fermions. The shift can also be interpreted as a consequence of the conservation of the total angular momentum. For the latter, if the NLSM has both time-reversal and inversion symmetries, the IF shift is zero; otherwise it could be finite. We take the NLSM with a vortex ring, which breaks both symmetries, as an example, and show that the IF shift can be used to detect topological Lifshitz transitions. Finally, we propose experimental designs to detect the IF shift.

Robust p-orbital half-metallicity and high Curie-temperature in the hole-doped anisotropic TcS2 (X=S, Se) nanosheets

Here, we study the magnetism of the distorted 1T-TcX2 (X=S,Se) based on first-principles calculation. The magnetism originates from the hole doping due to the density of states near the valence band edge having van Hove singularity feature. The calculated results show that the TcS2 monolayer can develop an interesting ferromagnetic (FM) half-metallic phase with tunable spin-polarization orientation. The FM half-metallicity and magnetic moments of the hole-doped TcS2 monolayer are primarily derived from the p orbital of S atoms, then, a FM ground phase with a high Curie temperature (Tc) (larger than 800 K) is obtained due to the strong Sp-Sp direct exchange interaction. The magnetic order is robust against thermal excitations at finite temperatures because of magnetic anisotropic energy. In the TcS2 bilayer, the electrons near Fermi level are redistributed when introducing the interlayer interaction, which suppresses the ferromagnetism induced by hole doping. The ferromagnetism can be recovered when the interlayer interaction is weakened.
