Nearly Isotropic Vortex Solid in $\mathbf{(La,Pr)_{3}Ni_{2}O_{7}}$ Thin Films

The discovery of superconductivity in bulk bilayer nickelates has established a new platform for exploring high-$T_c$ superconductivity beyond the cuprates. The role of the Ni $3d_{z^2}$-derived $\gamma$ band in the superconductivity of bilayer nickelates remains unresolved. By performing simultaneous resistance and diamagnetism measurements on (La,Pr)$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ thin films, we map the vortex melting phase diagram for both in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields. For $H\parallel c$, the geometric confinement effect gives rise to pancake vortices. Remarkably, the anisotropy parameter of the vortex melting field $\gamma_{H_m} \equiv H_m^{ab}/H_m^c$ decreases monotonically with decreasing temperature and approaches unity at low temperatures. Within the anisotropic Ginzburg--Landau scaling, $H_m^{ab}/H_m^c = \sqrt{\rho_s^{ab}/\rho_s^c}$ tracks the superfluid-density anisotropy. Such a vortex solid implies a nearly isotropic superfluid density, which is irreconcilable with the strictly two-dimensional $3d_{x^2-y^2}$-derived bands, but naturally explained by a substantial interlayer superfluid contribution from the $3d_{z^2}$-derived $\gamma$ band. Our results provide thermodynamic evidence for a substantial contribution of the $\gamma$ band to superconductivity in bilayer nickelate thin films.

Manipulating Coherent Light Matter Interaction: Continuous Transition between Strong Coupling and Weak Coupling in MoS2 Monolayer Coupled with Plasmonic Nanocavities

Strong interactions between surface plasmons in ultra-compact nanocavities and excitons in two dimensional materials have attracted wide interests for its prospective realization of polariton devices at room temperature. Here, we propose a continuous transition from weak coupling to strong coupling between excitons in MoS2 monolayer and highly localized plasmons in ultra-compact nanoantenna. The nanoantenna is assembled by a silver nanocube positioned over a gold film and separated by a dielectric spacer layer. We observed a 1570-fold enhancement in the photoluminescence at weak coupling regime in hybrid nanocavities with thick spacer layers. The interaction between excitons and plasmons is then directly prompted to strong coupling regime by shrinking down the thickness of spacer layer. Room temperature formation of polaritons with Rabi splitting up to 190 meV was observed, which is the largest plasmon-exciton Rabi splitting reported in two dimensional materials. Numerical calculations quantified the relation between coupling strength, local density of states and spacer thickness, and revealed the transition between weak coupling and strong coupling in nanocavities. The findings in this work offer a guideline for feasible designs of plasmon-exciton interaction systems with gap plasmonic cavities.

Band structure of Ge$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$alloy: a full-zone 30-band $k$$\cdot$$p$ model

A full-zone 30-band $k$$\cdot$$p$ model is developed as an efficient and reliable tool to compute electronic band structure in Ge$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$ alloy. The model was first used to reproduce the electronic band structures in Ge and $α$-Sn obtained with empirical tight binding and \textit{ab initio} methods. Input parameters for the 30-band $k$$\cdot$$p$ model are carefully calibrated against prior empirical predications and experimental data. Important material properties such as effective mass for electrons and holes, Luttinger parameters, and density of states are obtained for Ge$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$ alloy with the composition range $0<x<0.3$. The 30-band $k$$\cdot$$p$ model that requires far less computing resources is a necessary capability for optimization of sophisticated devices made from Ge$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$ alloy with a large parameter space to explore.
