Improvements of The Weil Bound For Artin-Schreier Curves

For Artin-Schreier curve y^q -y = f(x) defined over a finite field F_q of q elements, we show that the Weil bound for the number of the rational points over extension fields of F_q can often be greatly improved, essentially removing an extra factor of size about the square root of q in the error term.

Factorial and Noetherian Subrings of Power Series Rings

Let $F$ be a field. We show that certain subrings contained between the polynomial ring $F[X] = F[X_1, ..., X_n]$ and the power series ring $F[X][[Y]] = F[X_1, ..., X_n][[Y]]$ have Weierstrass Factorization, which allows us to deduce both unique factorization and the Noetherian property. These intermediate subrings are obtained from elements of $F[X][[Y]]$ by bounding their total $X$-degree above by a positive real-valued monotonic up function $λ$ on their $Y$-degree. These rings arise naturally in studying $p$-adic analytic variation of zeta functions over finite fields. Future research into this area may study more complicated subrings in which $Y = (Y_1, >..., Y_m)$ has more than one variable, and for which there are multiple degree functions, $λ_1, ..., λ_m$. Another direction of study would be to generalize these results to $k$-affinoid algebras.

T-adic exponential sums over finite fields

$T$-adic exponential sums associated to a Laurent polynomial $f$ are introduced. They interpolate all classical $p^m$-power order exponential sums associated to $f$. The Hodge bound for the Newton polygon of $L$-functions of $T$-adic exponential sums is established. This bound enables us to determine, for all $m$, the Newton polygons of $L$-functions of $p^m$-power order exponential sums associated to an $f$ which is ordinary for $m=1$. Deeper properties of $L$-functions of $T$-adic exponential sums are also studied. Along the way, new open problems about the $T$-adic exponential sum itself are discussed.

Functional Equations of $L$-Functions for Symmetric Products of the Kloosterman Sheaf

We determine the (arithmetic) local monodromy at 0 and at $\infty$ of the Kloosterman sheaf using local Fourier transformations and Laumon's stationary phase principle. We then calculate $ε$-factors for symmetric products of the Kloosterman sheaf. Using Laumon's product formula, we get functional equations of $L$-functions for these symmetric products, and prove a conjecture of Evans on signs of constants of functional equations.

Lucas-type congruences for cyclotomic $ψ$-coefficients

Let p be any prime and a be a positive integer. For nonnegative integers l,n and an integer r, the normalized cyclotomic $ψ$-coefficient $${n,r}_{l,p^a}:=p^{-[(n-p^{a-1}-lp^a)/(p^{a-1}(p-1))]} \sum_{k=r(mod p^a)}(-1)^k{n \choose k}{{(k-r)/p^a} \choose l}$$ is known to be an integer. In this paper, we show that this coefficient behaves like binomial coefficients and satisfies some Lucas-type congruences. This implies that a congruence of Wan is often optimal, and two conjectures of Sun and Davis are true.

On Katz's bound for number of elements with given trace and norm

In this note an improvement of the Katz's bound on the number of elements in a finite field with given trace and norm is given. The improvement is obtained by reducing the problem to estimating the number of rational points on certain toric Calabi-Yau hypersurface, and then to use detailed cohomological calculations by Rojas-Leon and the second author for such toric hypersurfaces.

Complexity of Decoding Positive-Rate Reed-Solomon Codes

The complexity of maximal likelihood decoding of the Reed-Solomon codes $[q-1, k]_q$ is a well known open problem. The only known result in this direction states that it is at least as hard as the discrete logarithm in some cases where the information rate unfortunately goes to zero. In this paper, we remove the rate restriction and prove that the same complexity result holds for any positive information rate. In particular, this resolves an open problem left in [4], and rules out the possibility of a polynomial time algorithm for maximal likelihood decoding problem of Reed-Solomon codes of any rate under a well known cryptographical hardness assumption. As a side result, we give an explicit construction of Hamming balls of radius bounded away from the minimum distance, which contain exponentially many codewords for Reed-Solomon code of any positive rate less than one. The previous constructions only apply to Reed-Solomon codes of diminishing rates. We also give an explicit construction of Hamming balls of relative radius less than 1 which contain subexponentially many codewords for Reed-Solomon code of rate approaching one.

Lectures on zeta functions over finite fields

These are the notes from the summer school in Göttingen sponsored by NATO Advanced Study Institute on Higher-Dimensional Geometry over Finite Fields that took place in 2007. The aim was to give a short introduction on zeta functions over finite fields, focusing on moment zeta functions and zeta functions of affine toric hypersurfaces.

L-functions of Symmetric Products of the Kloosterman Sheaf over Z

The classical $n$-variable Kloosterman sums over the finite field ${\bf F}_p$ give rise to a lisse $\bar {\bf Q}_l$-sheaf ${\rm Kl}_{n+1}$ on ${\bf G}_{m, {\bf F}_p}={\bf P}^1_{{\bf F}_p}-\{0,\infty\}$, which we call the Kloosterman sheaf. Let $L_p({\bf G}_{m,{\bf F}_p}, {\rm Sym}^k{\rm Kl}_{n+1}, s)$ be the $L$-function of the $k$-fold symmetric product of ${\rm Kl}_{n+1}$. We construct an explicit virtual scheme $X$ of finite type over ${\rm Spec} {\bf Z}$ such that the $p$-Euler factor of the zeta function of $X$ coincides with $L_p({\bf G}_{m,{\bf F}_p}, {\rm Sym}^k{\rm Kl}_{n+1}, s)$. We also prove similar results for $\otimes^k {\rm Kl}_{n+1}$ and $\bigwedge^k {\rm Kl}_{n+1}$.

On the subset sum problem over finite fields

The subset sum problem over finite fields is a well-known {\bf NP}-complete problem. It arises naturally from decoding generalized Reed-Solomon codes. In this paper, we study the number of solutions of the subset sum problem from a mathematical point of view. In several interesting cases, we obtain explicit or asymptotic formulas for the solution number. As a consequence, we obtain some results on the decoding problem of Reed-Solomon codes.

On Fleck quotients

Let $p$ be a prime, and let $n>0$ and $r$ be integers. In this paper we study Fleck's quotient $$F_p(n,r)=(-p)^{-\lfloor(n-1)/(p-1)\rfloor} \sum_{k=r(mod p)}\binom {n}{k}(-1)^k\in Z.$$ We determine $F_p(n,r)$ mod $p$ completely by certain number-theoretic and combinatorial methods; consequently, if $2\le n\le p$ then $$\sum_{k=1}^n(-1)^{pk-1}\binom{pn-1}{pk-1} \equiv(n-1)!B_{p-n}p^n (mod p^{n+1}),$$ where $B_0,B_1,...$ are Bernoulli numbers. We also establish the Kummer-type congruence $F_p(n+p^a(p-1),r)\equiv F_p(n,r) (mod p^a)$ for $a=1,2,3,...$, and reveal some connections between Fleck's quotients and class numbers of the quadratic fields $\Q(\sqrt{\pm p})$ and the $p$-th cyclotomic field $\Q(ζ_p)$. In addition, generalized Fleck quotients are also studied in this paper.

Moment Zeta Functions for Toric Calabi-Yau Hypersurfaces

We study in detail the family of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces defined by x_1+...+x_n+1/(x_1...x_n)=t over a finite field k. We determine its local and global monodromy and the trivial factors of its moment zeta function and Dwork's unit root zeta function.

Counting points on varieties over finite fields of small characteristic

We present a deterministic polynomial time algorithm for computing the zeta function of an arbitrary variety of fixed dimension over a finite field of small characteristic. One consequence of this result is an efficient method for computing the order of the group of rational points on the Jacobian of a smooth geometrically connected projective curve over a finite field of small characteristic.

Combinatorial Congruences and $ψ$-Operators

The $ψ$-operator for $(ϕ, Γ)$-modules plays an important role in the study of Iwasawa theory via Fontaine's big rings. In this note, we prove several sharp estimates for the $ψ$-operator in the cyclotomic case. These estimates immediately imply a number of sharp $p$-adic combinatorial congruences, one of which extends the classical congruences of Fleck (1913) and Weisman (1977).

Mirror Congruence for Rational Points on Calabi-Yau Varieties

Wan conjectures that if $X$ and $Y$ form a strong mirror pair of Calabi-Yau varieties over a finite field $F_q$ with $q$ elements, then X and Y have the same number of $F_{q^k}$-rational points modulo $q^k$. We prove this conjecture under the condition that $Y$ can be obtained from $X$ through quotient construction.

L-Functions for Symmetric Products of Kloosterman Sums

The classical Kloosterman sums give rise to a Galois representation of the function field unramfied outside 0 and $\infty$. We study the local monodromy of this representation at $\infty$ using $l$-adic method based on the work of Deligne and Katz. As an application, we determine the degrees and the bad factors of the $L$-functions of the symmetric products of the above representation. Our results generalize some results of Robba obtained through $p$-adic method.

Mirror Symmetry For Zeta Functions

In this paper, we study the relation between the zeta function of a Calabi-Yau hypersurface and the zeta function of its mirror. Two types of arithmetic relations are discovered. This motivates us to formulate two general arithmetic mirror conjectures for the zeta functions of a mirror pair of Calabi-Yau manifolds.
