A mean field game model with non-local spatial interactions and resources accumulation

We study a family of mean field games arising in modeling the behavior of strategic economic agents which move across space maximizing their utility from consumption and have the possibility to accumulate resources for production (such as human capital). The resulting mean field game PDE system is not covered in the actual literature on the topic as it displays weaker assumptions on the regularity of the data (in particular global Lipschitz continuity and boundedness of the objective are lost), state constraints, and a non-standard interaction term. We obtain a first result on the existence of solution of the mean field game PDE system.

Optimal policies for environmental assets under spatial heterogeneity and global awareness

The aim of this paper is to formulate and study a stochastic model for the management of environmental assets in a geographical context where in each place the local authorities take their policy decisions maximizing their own welfare, hence not cooperating each other. A key feature of our model is that the welfare depends not only on the local environmental asset, but also on the global one, making the problem much more interesting but technically much more complex to study, since strategic interaction among players arise. We study the problem first from the $N$-players game perspective and find open and closed loop Nash equilibria in explicit form. We also study the convergence of the $N$-players game (when $n\to +\infty$) to a suitable Mean Field Game whose unique equilibrium is exactly the limit of both the open and closed loop Nash equilibria found above, hence supporting their meaning for the game. Then we solve explicitly the problem from the cooperative perspective of the social planner and compare its solution to the equilibria of the $N$-players game. Moreover we find the Pigouvian tax which aligns the decentralized closed loop equilibrium to the social optimum.

Linear Quadratic Nash Systems and Master Equations in Hilbert Spaces

This paper aims to develop a theory for linear-quadratic Nash systems and Master equations in possibly infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. As a first step and motivated by the recent results in [31], we study a more general model in the linear quadratic case where the dependence on the distribution enters just in the objective functional through the mean. This property enables the Nash systems and the Master equation to be reduced to two systems of coupled Riccati equations and backward abstract evolution equations. We show that solutions for such systems exist and are unique for all time horizons, a result that is completely new in the literature in our setting. Finally, we apply the results to a vintage capital model, where capital depends on time and age, and the production function depends on the mean of the vintage capital.

Linear-Quadratic Mean Field Games in Hilbert spaces

This paper represents the first attempt to develop a theory for linear-quadratic mean field games in possibly infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces. As a starting point, we study the case, considered in most finite dimensional contributions on the topic, where the dependence on the distribution enters just in the objective functional through the mean. This feature allows, similarly to the finite dimensional case, to reduce the usual mean field game system to a Riccati equation and a forward-backward coupled system of abstract evolution equations. Such system is completely new in infinite dimension and no results have been proved on it so far. We show existence and uniqueness of solutions for such system, applying a delicate approximation procedure. We apply the results to a production output planning problem with delay in the control variable.

Optimal Planning in Habit Formation Models with Multiple Goods

In this paper, on the line e.g. of [COW00]) we investigate a model with habit formation and two types of substitute goods. Such family of models, even in the case of 1 good, are difficult to study since their utility function is not concave in the interesting cases (see e.g. [BG20]), hence the first order conditions are not sufficient. We introduce and explain the model and provide some first results using the dynamic programming approach. Such results will form a solid ground over which a deep study of the features of the solutions can be performed.

A Mean Field Game model for COVID-19 with human capital accumulation

In this manuscript we present several possible ways of modeling human capital accumulation during the spread of a disease following an agent based approach, where agents behave maximizing their intertemporal utility. We assume that the interaction between agents is of mean field type, yielding a Mean Field Game description of the problem. We discuss how the analysis of a model including both the mechanism of change of species from one epidemiological state to the other and an optimization problem for each agent leads to an aggregate behavior that is not easy to describe, and that sometimes exhibits structural problems. Therefore we eventually propose and study numerically a SEIRD model in which the rate of infection depends on the distribution of the population, given exogenously as the solution to the the Mean Field Game system arising as the macroscopic description of the discrete multi-agent economic model for the accumulation of human capital. Such model arises in fact as a simplified but tractable version of the initial one.

Habits and demand changes after COVID-19

In this paper, we investigate how the COVID-19 pandemics and more precisely the lockdown of a sector of the economy may have changed our habits and, there-fore, altered the demand of some goods even after the re-opening. In a two-sector infinite horizon economy, we show that the demand of the goods produced by the sector closed during the lockdown could shrink or expand with respect to their pre-pandemic level depending on the length of the lockdown and the relative strength of the satiation effect and the substitutability effect. We also provide conditions under which this sector could remain inactive even after the lockdown as well as an insight on the policy which should be adopted to avoid this outcome.

Rate of convergence for singular perturbations of Hamilton-Jacobi equations in unbounded spaces

We prove rate of convergence results for singular perturbations of Hamilton-Jacobi equations in unbounded spaces where the fast operator is linear, uniformly elliptic and has an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck-type drift. The slow operator is a fully nonlinear elliptic operator while the source term is assumed only locally Hölder continuous in both fast and slow variables. We obtain several rates of convergence according on the regularity of the source term.

Nonconvex flexible sparsity regularization: theory and monotone numerical schemes

Flexible sparsity regularization means stably approximating sparse solutions of operator equations by using coefficient-dependent penalizations. We propose and analyse a general nonconvex approach in this respect, from both theoretical and numerical perspectives. Namely, we show convergence of the regularization method and establish convergence properties of a couple of majorization approaches for the associated nonconvex problems. We also test a monotone algorithm for an academic example where the operator is an $M$ matrix, and on a time-dependent optimal control problem, pointing out the advantages of employing variable penalties over a fixed penalty.

Existence and non-existence for time-dependent mean field games with strong aggregation

We investigate the existence of classical solutions to second-order quadratic Mean-Field Games systems with local and strongly decreasing couplings of the form $-σm^α$, $α\ge 2/N$, where $m$ is the population density and $N$ is the dimension of the state space. We prove the existence of solutions under the assumption that $σ$ is small enough. For large $σ$, we show that existence may fail whenever the time horizon $T$ is large.

Periodic Homogenization for Weakly Elliptic Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman Equations with Critical Fractional Diffusion

In this paper we establish periodic homogenization for Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equations, associated to nonlocal operators of integro-differential type. We consider the case when the fractional diffusion has the same order as the drift term, and is weakly elliptic. The outcome of the paper is twofold. One one hand, we provide Lipschitz regularity results for weakly elliptic non-local HJB, extending the results previously obtained in [8]. On the other hand, we establish a convergence result, based on half relaxed limits and a comparison principle for the effective problem. The latter strongly relies on the regularity and the ellipticity properties of the effective Hamiltonian, for which a fine Lipschitz estimate of the corrector plays a crucial role.

On a monotone scheme for nonconvex nonsmooth optimization with applications to fracture mechanics

A general class of nonconvex optimization problems is considered, where the penalty is the composition of a linear operator with a nonsmooth nonconvex mapping, which is concave on the positive real line. The necessary optimality condition of a regularized version of the original problem is solved by means of a monotonically convergent scheme. Such problems arise in continuum mechanics, as for instance cohesive fractures, where singular behaviour is usually modelled by nonsmooth nonconvex energies. The proposed algorithm is successfully tested for fracture mechanics problems. Its performance is also compared to two alternative algorithms for nonsmooth nonconvex optimization arising in optimal control and mathematical imaging.

On Neumann problems for nonlocal Hamilton-Jacobi equations with dominating gradient terms

We are concerned with the well-posedness of Neumann boundary value problems for nonlocal Hamilton-Jacobi equations related to jump processes in general smooth domains. We consider a nonlocal diffusive term of censored type of order less than 1 and Hamiltonians both in coercive form and in noncoercive Bellman form, whose growth in the gradient make them the leading term in the equation. We prove a comparison principle for bounded sub-and supersolutions in the context of viscosity solutions with generalized boundary conditions, and consequently by Perron's method we get the existence and uniqueness of continuous solutions. We give some applications in the evolutive setting, proving the large time behaviour of the associated evolutive problem under suitable assumptions on the data.

On the monotone and primal-dual active set schemes for $\ell^p$-type problems, $p \in (0,1]$

Nonsmooth nonconvex optimization problems involving the $\ell^p$ quasi-norm, $p \in (0, 1]$, of a linear map are considered. A monotonically convergent scheme for a regularized version of the original problem is developed and necessary optimality conditions for the original problem in the form of a complementary system amenable for computation are given. Then an algorithm for solving the above mentioned necessary optimality conditions is proposed. It is based on a combination of the monotone scheme and a primal-dual active set strategy. The performance of the two algorithms is studied by means of a series of numerical tests in different cases, including optimal control problems, fracture mechanics and microscopy image reconstruction.

Junction conditions for finite horizon optimal control problems on multi-domains with continuous and discontinuous solutions

This paper deals with junction conditions for Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equations for finite horizon control problems on multi-domains. We consider two different cases where the final cost is continuous or lower semi-continuous. In the continuous case we extend the results of "Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations on multi-domains" by the second and third authors in a more general framework with switching running costs and weaker controllability assumptions. The comparison principle has been established to guarantee the uniqueness and the stability results for the HJB system on such multi-domains. In the lower semi-continuous case, we characterize the value function as the unique lower semi-continuous viscosity solution of the HJB system, under a local controllability assumption.

Viscosity methods for large deviations estimates for multiscale stochastic processes

We study singular perturbation problems for second order HJB equations in an unbounded setting. The main applications are large deviations estimates for the short maturity asymptotics of stochastic systems affected by a stochastic volatility, where the volatility is modelled by a process evolving at a faster time scale and satisfying some condition implying ergodicity.

Large deviations for some fast stochastic volatility models by viscosity methods

We consider the short time behaviour of stochastic systems affected by a stochastic volatility evolving at a faster time scale. We study the asymptotics of a logarithmic functional of the process by methods of the theory of homogenisation and singular perturbations for fully nonlinear PDEs. We point out three regimes depending on how fast the volatility oscillates relative to the horizon length. We prove a large deviation principle for each regime and apply it to the asymptotics of option prices near maturity.
