Energy density in color string clusters and its implications for heavy-quark energy loss

Initial stages of relativistic ion and proton-proton collisions can be described within the framework of color flux tube formation between the receding color charges. In the approximation of fully penetrable color string volumes, regions of high string density yield overlaps of randomly oriented color fields and create string clusters. The paper discusses two ways of characterizing the medium formed by the resulting field configurations. One is based on the chromo-electric field strength that scales as the square root of the number of color sources in the cluster. The other is defined by the energy density of the confined color field and thus scales linearly with that number. We compare the effect of the two approaches on the extracted effective temperature of the medium, which is the input for calculations of collisional and radiative energy loss of a probe traversing it.

Energy loss of heavy-flavor quarks in color string medium

The paper presents preliminary estimates of heavy-flavor (HF) quark energy loss during its propagation through the non-equilibrated medium formed in minimum bias proton-proton (p+p) collisions at LHC energies. The study is inspired by the ongoing hot debates on whether tiny droplets of Quark-Gluon Plasma can be created in collisions of small systems. In this work, we model a p+p event with a fluctuating number of color strings originated from multi-pomeron exchanges. Considered longitudinal oscillations of strings dynamically initialize medium at each time step. Their varying overlaps create fluctuations in the color field energy density that governs the elastic scattering rate of HF quarks with the gluons present within the string volume. We calculate the transverse momentum dependence of the momentum loss for charm (anti-)quarks that are produced in initial hard scatterings and traverse the described environment. The simulation is performed using a developed hybrid approach on an event-by-event basis. Our results show significantly lower HF quarks energy loss compared to that obtained in the expanding hydrodynamic scenario of the new EPOS4HQ model.

Pseudorapidity dependence of multiplicity and transverse momentum fluctuations in pp collisions at SPS energies

A search for the critical behavior of strongly interacting matter was performed at the NA61/SHINE experiment by studying event-by-event fluctuations of multiplicity and transverse momentum of charged hadrons produced in inelastic p+p collisions at 20, 31, 40, 80 and 158 GeV/c beam momentum. Results for the energy dependence of the scaled variance of the multiplicity distribution and for two families of strongly intensive measures of multiplicity and transverse momentum fluctuations $Δ[P_{T},N]$ and $Σ[P_{T},N]$ are presented. These quantities were studied in different pseudorapidity intervals, which correspond to changing the baryon chemical potential and the temperature at the freeze-out stage. The strongly intensive measures $Δ[N_{F},N_{B}]$ and $Σ[N_{F},N_{B}]$ were also used in the analysis of short- and long-range multiplicity correlations. Results on multiplicity and transverse momentum fluctuations significantly depend on the charges of the selected hadrons and the width and/or location of pseudorapidity intervals. The event generator EPOS does not describe the data for the $Δ[P_{T},N]$ measure, but provides a fair description of $Σ[P_{T},N]$. The measure $Σ[N_{F},N_{B}]$ of forward-backward fluctuations is reproduced reasonably well by the EPOS model.
