H2-MG: A multigrid method for hierarchical rank structured matrices

This paper presents a new fast iterative solver for large systems involving kernel matrices. Advantageous aspects of H2 matrix approximations and the multigrid method are hybridized to create the H2-MG algorithm. This combination provides the time and memory efficiency of H2 operator representation along with the rapid convergence of a multilevel method. We describe how H2-MG works, show its linear complexity, and demonstrate its effectiveness on two standard kernels and on a single-layer potential boundary element discretization with complex geometry. The current zoo of H2 solvers, which includes a wide variety of iterative and direct solvers, so far lacks a method that exploits multiple levels of resolution, commonly referred to in the iterative methods literature as ``multigrid'' from its origins in a hierarchy of grids used to discretize differential equations. This makes H2-MG a valuable addition to the collection of H2 solvers. The algorithm has potential for advancing various fields that require the solution of large, dense, symmetric positive definite matrices.

Multidimensional deconvolution with shared bases

We address the estimation of seismic wavefields by means of Multidimensional Deconvolution (MDD) for various redatuming applications. While offering more accuracy than conventional correlation-based redatuming methods, MDD faces challenges due to the ill-posed nature of the underlying inverse problem and the requirement to handle large, dense, complex-valued matrices. These obstacles have long limited the adoption of MDD in the geophysical community. Recent interest in this technology has spurred the development of new strategies to enhance the robustness of the inversion process and reduce its computational overhead. We present a novel approach that extends the concept of block low-rank approximations, usually applied to linear operators, to simultaneously compress the operator, right-hand side, and unknowns. This technique greatly alleviates the data-heavy nature of MDD. Moreover, since in 3d applications the matrices do not lend themselves to global low rank approximations, we introduce a novel H2-like approximation. We aim to streamline MDD implementations, fostering efficiency and controlling accuracy in wavefield reconstruction. This innovation holds potential for broader applications in the geophysical domain, possibly revolutionizing the analysis of multi-dimensional seismic datasets.

FMM-LU: A fast direct solver for multiscale boundary integral equations in three dimensions

We present a fast direct solver for boundary integral equations on complex surfaces in three dimensions using an extension of the recently introduced recursive strong skeletonization scheme. For problems that are not highly oscillatory, our algorithm computes an ${LU}$-like hierarchical factorization of the dense system matrix, permitting application of the inverse in $\mathcal O(n)$ time, where $n$ is the number of unknowns on the surface. The factorization itself also scales linearly with the system size, albeit with a somewhat larger constant. The scheme is built on a level-restricted adaptive octree data structure, and therefore it is compatible with highly nonuniform discretizations. Furthermore, the scheme is coupled with high-order accurate locally-corrected Nyström quadrature methods to integrate the singular and weakly-singular Green's functions used in the integral representations. Our method has immediate applications to a variety of problems in computational physics. We concentrate here on studying its performance in acoustic scattering (governed by the Helmholtz equation) at low to moderate frequencies, and provide rigorous justification for compression of submatrices via proxy surfaces.

FMM-Net: neural network architecture based on the Fast Multipole Method

In this paper, we propose a new neural network architecture based on the H2 matrix. Even though networks with H2-inspired architecture already exist, and our approach is designed to reduce memory costs and improve performance by taking into account the sparsity template of the H2 matrix. In numerical comparison with alternative neural networks, including the known H2-based ones, our architecture showed itself as beneficial in terms of performance, memory, and scalability.

Simple non-extensive sparsification of the hierarchical matrices

In this paper, we consider the matrices approximated in H2 format. The direct solution, as well as the preconditioning, of systems with such matrices is a challenging problem. We propose a non-extensive sparse factorization of the H2 matrix that allows to substitute the direct H2 solution with the solution of the system with an equivalent sparse matrix of the same size. The sparse factorization is constructed out of parameters of the H2 matrix. In the numerical experiments, we show the consistency of this approach in comparison to the other approximate block low-rank hierarchical solvers, such as HODLR, H2Lib and IFMM.

Preconditioners for hierarchical matrices based on their extended sparse form

In this paper we consider linear systems with dense-matrices which arise from numerical solution of boundary integral equations. Such matrices can be well-approximated with $\mathcal{H}^2$-matrices. We propose several new preconditioners for such matrices that are based on the equivalent \emph{sparse extended form} of $\mathcal{H}^2$-matrices. In the numerical experiments we show that the most efficient approach is based on the so-called reverse-Schur preconditioning technique.
