Weighted posets and the enriched monomial basis of QSym (extended abstract)

Gessel's fundamental and Stembridge's peak functions are the generating functions for (enriched) $P$-partitions on labelled chains. They are also the bases of two significant subalgebras of formal power series, respectively the ring of quasisymmetric functions (QSym) and the algebra of peaks. Hsiao introduced the monomial peak functions, a basis of the algebra of peaks indexed by odd integer compositions whose relation to peak functions mimics the one between the monomial and fundamental bases of QSym. We show that the extension of monomial peaks to any composition is a new basis of QSym and generalise Hsiao's results including the product rule. To this end we introduce a weighted variant of posets and study their generating functions.

A basis for a quotient of symmetric polynomials

Consider the ring $\mathcal{S}$ of symmetric polynomials in $k$ variables over an arbitrary base ring $\mathbf{k}$. Fix $k$ scalars $a_{1},a_{2},\ldots,a_{k}\in\mathbf{k}$. Let $I$ be the ideal of $\mathcal{S}$ generated by $h_{n-k+1}-a_{1},h_{n-k+2}-a_{2},\ldots,h_{n}-a_{k}$, where $h_{i}$ is the $i$-th complete homogeneous symmetric polynomial. The quotient ring $\mathcal{S}/I$ generalizes both the usual and the quantum cohomology of the Grassmannian. We show that $\mathcal{S}/I$ has a $\mathbf{k}$-module basis consisting of (residue classes of) Schur polynomials fitting into an $\left( n-k\right) \times k$-rectangle; and that its multiplicative structure constants satisfy the same $S_3$-symmetry as those of the Grassmannian cohomology. We prove a Pieri rule and a "rim hook algorithm", and conjecture a positivity property generalizing that of Gromov-Witten invariants. We construct two further bases of $\mathcal{S}/I$ as well. We also study the quotient of the whole polynomial ring (not just the symmetric polynomials) by the ideal generated by the same $k$ polynomials as $I$.

On the rank of Hankel matrices over finite fields

Given three nonnegative integers $p,q,r$ and a finite field $F$, how many Hankel matrices $\left( x_{i+j}\right) _{0\leq i\leq p,\ 0\leq j\leq q}$ over $F$ have rank $\leq r$ ? This question is classical, and the answer ($q^{2r}$ when $r\leq\min\left\{ p,q\right\} $) has been obtained independently by various authors using different tools (Daykin, Elkies, Garcia Armas, Ghorpade and Ram). In this note, we study a refinement of this result: We show that if we fix the first $k$ of the entries $x_{0},x_{1},\ldots,x_{k-1}$ for some $k\leq r\leq\min\left\{ p,q\right\} $, then the number of ways to choose the remaining $p+q-k+1$ entries $x_{k},x_{k+1},\ldots,x_{p+q}$ such that the resulting Hankel matrix $\left( x_{i+j}\right) _{0\leq i\leq p,\ 0\leq j\leq q}$ has rank $\leq r$ is $q^{2r-k}$. This is exactly the answer that one would expect if the first $k$ entries had no effect on the rank, but of course the situation is not this simple. The refined result generalizes (and provides an alternative proof of) a result by Anzis, Chen, Gao, Kim, Li and Patrias on evaluations of Jacobi-Trudi determinants over finite fields.

The Elser nuclei sum revisited

Fix a finite undirected graph $Γ$ and a vertex $v$ of $Γ$. Let $E$ be the set of edges of $Γ$. We call a subset $F$ of $E$ pandemic if each edge of $Γ$ has at least one endpoint that can be connected to $v$ by an $F$-path (i.e., a path using edges from $F$ only). In 1984, Elser showed that the sum of $\left(-1\right)^{\left| F\right|}$ over all pandemic subsets $F$ of $E$ is $0$ if $E\neq \varnothing$. We give a simple proof of this result via a sign-reversing involution, and discuss variants, generalizations and refinements, revealing connections to abstract convexity (the notion of an antimatroid) and discrete Morse theory.

Petrie symmetric functions

For any positive integer $k$ and nonnegative integer $m$, we consider the symmetric function $G\left( k,m\right)$ defined as the sum of all monomials of degree $m$ that involve only exponents smaller than $k$. We call $G\left( k,m\right)$ a "Petrie symmetric function" in honor of Flinders Petrie, as the coefficients in its expansion in the Schur basis are determinants of Petrie matrices (and thus belong to $\left\{ 0,1,-1\right\} $ by a classical result of Gordon and Wilkinson). More generally, we prove a Pieri-like rule for expanding a product of the form $G\left( k,m\right) \cdot s_μ$ in the Schur basis whenever $μ$ is a partition; all coefficients in this expansion belong to $\left\{ 0,1,-1\right\} $. We also show that $G\left( k,1\right) ,G\left( k,2\right) ,G\left( k,3\right) ,\ldots$ form an algebraically independent generating set for the symmetric functions when $1-k$ is invertible in the base ring, and we prove a conjecture of Liu and Polo about the expansion of $G\left( k,2k-1\right)$ in the Schur basis.

Proof of three conjectures on determinants related to quadratic residues

In this paper we confirm three conjectures of Z.-W. Sun on determinants. We first show that any odd integer $n>3$ divides the determinant $$\left|(i^2+dj^2)\left(\frac{i^2+dj^2}n\right)\right|_{0\le i,j\le (n-1)/2},$$ where $d$ is any integer and $(\frac{\cdot}n)$ is the Jacobi symbol. Then we prove some divisibility results concerning $|(i+dj)^n|_{0\le i,j\le n-1}$ and $|(i^2+dj^2)^n|_{0\le i,j\le n-1}$, where $d\not=0$ and $n>2$ are integers. Finally, for any odd prime $p$ and integers $c$ and $d$ with $p\nmid cd$, we determine completely the Legendre symbol $(\frac{S_c(d,p)}p)$, where $S_c(d,p):=|(\frac{i^2+dj^2+c}p)|_{1\le i,j\le(p-1)/2}$.

Hopf Algebras in Combinatorics

These notes -- originating from a one-semester class by their second author at the University of Minnesota -- survey some of the most important Hopf algebras appearing in combinatorics. After introducing coalgebras, bialgebras and Hopf algebras in general, we study the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions, including Zelevinsky's axiomatic characterization of it as a "positive self-adjoint Hopf algebra" and its application to the representation theory of symmetric and (briefly) finite general linear groups. The notes then continue with the quasisymmetric and the noncommutative symmetric functions, some Hopf algebras formed from graphs, posets and matroids, and the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations. Among the results surveyed are the Littlewood-Richardson rule and other symmetric function identities, Zelevinsky's structure theorem for PSHs, the antipode formula for P-partition enumerators, the Aguiar-Bergeron-Sottile universal property of QSym, the theory of Lyndon words, the Gessel-Reutenauer bijection, and Hazewinkel's polynomial freeness of QSym. The notes are written with a graduate student reader in mind, being mostly self-contained but requiring a good familiarity with multilinear algebra and -- for the representation-theory applications -- basic group representation theory.

Integrality of matrices, finiteness of matrix semigroups, and dynamics of linear and additive cellular automata

Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a finite commutative ring, and let $\mathbb{L}$ be a commutative $\mathbb{K}$-algebra. Let $A$ and $B$ be two $n \times n$-matrices over $\mathbb{L}$ that have the same characteristic polynomial. The main result of this paper states that the set $\left\{ A^0,A^1,A^2,\ldots\right\}$ is finite if and only if the set $\left\{ B^0,B^1,B^2,\ldots\right\}$ is finite. We apply this result to Cellular Automata (CA). Indeed, it gives a complete and easy-to-check characterization of sensitivity to initial conditions and equicontinuity for linear CA over the alphabet $\mathbb{K}^n$ for $\mathbb{K} = \mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$ i.e., CA in which the local rule is defined by $n\times n$-matrices with elements in $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$. To prove our main result, we derive an integrality criterion for matrices that is likely of independent interest. Namely, let $\mathbb{K}$ be any commutative ring (not necessarily finite), and let $\mathbb{L}$ be a commutative $\mathbb{K}$-algebra. Consider any $n \times n$-matrix $A$ over $\mathbb{L}$. Then, $A \in \mathbb{L}^{n \times n}$ is integral over $\mathbb{K}$ (that is, there exists a monic polynomial $f \in \mathbb{K}\left[t\right]$ satisfying $f\left(A\right) = 0$) if and only if all coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of $A$ are integral over $\mathbb{K}$. The proof of this fact relies on a strategic use of exterior powers (a trick pioneered by Gert Almkvist). Furthermore, we extend the decidability result concerning sensitivity and equicontinuity to the wider class of additive CA over a finite abelian group. For such CA, we also prove the decidability of injectivity, surjectivity, topological transitivity and all the properties (as, for instance, ergodicity) that are equivalent to the latter.

Multiline queues with spectral parameters

Using the description of multiline queues as functions on words, we introduce the notion of a spectral weight of a word by defining a new weighting on multiline queues. We show that the spectral weight of a word is invariant under a natural action of the symmetric group, giving a proof of the commutativity conjecture of Arita, Ayyer, Mallick, and Prolhac. We give a determinant formula for the spectral weight of a word, which gives a proof of a conjecture of the first author and Linusson.

Commutators, matrices and an identity of Copeland

Given two elements $a$ and $b$ of a noncommutative ring, we express $\left( ba\right)^n$ as a "row vector times matrix times column vector" product, where the matrix is the $n$-th power of a matrix with entries $\dbinom{i}{j}\operatorname{ad}_a^{i-j}\left( b\right)$. This generalizes a formula by Tom Copeland used in the study of Pascal-style matrices.

Integrality over ideal semifiltrations

We study integrality over rings (all commutative in this paper) and over ideal semifiltrations (a generalization of integrality over ideals). We begin by reproving classical results, such as a version of the "faithful module" criterion for integrality over a ring, the transitivity of integrality, and the theorem that sums and products of integral elements are again integral. Then, we define the notion of integrality over an ideal semifiltration (a sequence $\left( I_0,I_1,I_2,\ldots\right)$ of ideals satisfying $I_0 =A$ and $I_a I_b \subseteq I_{a+b}$ for all $a,b\in\mathbb{N}$), which generalizes both integrality over a ring and integrality over an ideal (as considered, e.g., in Swanson/Huneke, "Integral Closure of Ideals, Rings, and Modules"). We prove a criterion that reduces this general notion to integrality over a ring using a variant of the Rees algebra. Using this criterion, we study this notion further and obtain transitivity and closedness under sums and products for it as well. Finally, we prove the curious fact that if $u$, $x$ and $y$ are three elements of a (commutative) $A$-algebra (for $A$ a ring) such that $u$ is both integral over $A\left[ x\right]$ and integral over $A\left[ y\right]$, then $u$ is integral over $A\left[ xy\right]$. We generalize this to integrality over ideal semifiltrations, too.

The $n$ body matrix and its determinant

The primary purpose of this note is to prove two recent conjectures concerning the $n$ body matrix that arose in recent papers of Escobar-Ruiz, Miller, and Turbiner on the classical and quantum $n$ body problem in $d$-dimensional space. First, whenever the positions of the masses are in a nonsingular configuration, meaning that they do not lie on an affine subspace of dimension $\leq n-2$, the $n$ body matrix is positive definite and, hence, defines a Riemannian metric on the space coordinatized by their interpoint distances. Second, its determinant can be factored into the product of the order $n$ Cayley--Menger determinant and a mass-dependent factor that is also of one sign on all nonsingular mass configurations. The factorization of the $n$ body determinant is shown to be a special case of an intriguing general result proving the factorization of determinants of a certain form.

$t$-Unique Reductions for Mészáros's Subdivision Algebra

Fix a commutative ring $\mathbf{k}$, two elements $β,α\in\mathbf{k}$ and a positive integer $n$. Let $\mathcal{X}$ be the polynomial ring over $\mathbf{k}$ in the $n(n-1)/2$ indeterminates $x_{i,j}$ for all $1\leq i<j\leq n$. Consider the ideal $\mathcal{J}$ of $\mathcal{X}$ generated by all polynomials of the form $x_{i,j}x_{j,k}-x_{i,k}(x_{i,j}+x_{j,k}+β)-α$ for $1\leq i<j<k\leq n$. The quotient algebra $\mathcal{X}/\mathcal{J}$ (at least for a certain choice of $\mathbf{k}$, $β$ and $α$) has been introduced by Karola Mészáros as a commutative analogue of Anatol Kirillov's quasi-classical Yang-Baxter algebra. A monomial in $\mathcal{X}$ is said to be pathless if it has no divisors of the form $x_{i,j}x_{j,k}$ with $1\leq i<j<k\leq n$. The residue classes of these pathless monomials span the $\mathbf{k}$-module $\mathcal{X}/\mathcal{J}$, but (in general) are $\mathbf{k}$-linearly dependent. Recently, the study of Grothendieck polynomials has led Laura Escobar and Karola Mészáros to defining a $\mathbf{k}$-algebra homomorphism $D$ from $\mathcal{X}$ into the polynomial ring $\mathbf{k}[t_{1},t_{2},\ldots,t_{n-1}]$ that sends each $x_{i,j}$ to $t_{i}$. We show the following fact (generalizing a conjecture of Mészáros): If $p\in\mathcal{X}$, and if $q\in\mathcal{X}$ is a $\mathbf{k}$-linear combination of pathless monomials satisfying $p\equiv q\operatorname{mod}\mathcal{J}$, then $D(q)$ does not depend on $q$ (as long as $β$, $α$ and $p$ are fixed). Thus, reducing a $p\in\mathcal{X}$ modulo $\mathcal{J}$ may lead to different results depending on the choices made in the reduction process, but all of them become identical once $D$ is applied. We also find an actual basis of the $\mathbf{k}$-module $\mathcal{X}/\mathcal{J}$, using what we call forkless monomials.

The signed random-to-top operator on tensor space (draft)

Given a free module L over a commutative ring k, we study two k-linear operators on the tensor algebra of T(L): One of them sends a pure tensor u_1 (X) u_2 (X) ... (X) u_k to the sum of all tensors u_i (X) u_1 (X) u_2 (X) ... (X) (skip u_i) (X) ... (X) u_k. The other is similar, but the sum is replaced by an alternating sum. These operators can be regarded as algebraic analogues of the "random-to-top shuffle" from combinatorics. We describe the kernel of the second operator (which we call boldface-t); it is a certain easily described Lie subsuperalgebra of T(L). We also describe the kernel of the first operator (which is denoted boldface-t') when the additive group k is torsionfree (the description is analogous to that of the kernel of t) and also when k is an algebra over a finite field (in this case, the description is slightly complicated by the presence of p-th powers).

Boolean Witt vectors and an integral Edrei-Thoma theorem

A subtraction-free definition of the big Witt vector construction was recently given by the first author. This allows one to define the big Witt vectors of any semiring. Here we give an explicit combinatorial description of the big Witt vectors of the Boolean semiring. We do the same for two variants of the big Witt vector construction: the Schur Witt vectors and the $p$-typical Witt vectors. We use this to give an explicit description of the Schur Witt vectors of the natural numbers, which can be viewed as the classification of totally positive power series with integral coefficients, first obtained by Davydov. We also determine the cardinalities of some Witt vector algebras with entries in various concrete arithmetic semirings.

Refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials and generalized Bender-Knuth involutions

The dual stable Grothendieck polynomials are a deformation of the Schur functions, originating in the study of the K-theory of the Grassmannian. We generalize these polynomials by introducing a countable family of additional parameters, and we prove that this generalization still defines symmetric functions. For this fact, we give two self-contained proofs, one of which constructs a family of involutions on the set of reverse plane partitions generalizing the Bender-Knuth involutions on semistandard tableaux, whereas the other classifies the structure of reverse plane partitions with entries 1 and 2.
