The porous medium equation on noncompact manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature: a Green function approach

We consider the porous medium equation (PME) on complete noncompact manifolds $M$ of nonnegative Ricci curvature. We require nonparabolicity of the manifold and construct a natural space $X$ of functions, strictly larger than $L^1$, in which the Green function on $M$ appears as a weight, such that the PME admits a solution in the weak dual (i.e. potential) sense whenever the initial datum $u_0$ is nonnegative and belongs to $X$. Smoothing estimates are also proved to hold both for $L^1$ data, where they take into account the volume growth of Riemannian balls giving rise to bounds which are shown to be sharp in a suitable sense, and for data belonging to $X$ as well.

Nonexistence of solutions to parabolic problems with a potential on weighted graphs

We investigate nonexistence of nontrivial nonnegative solutions to a class of semilinear parabolic equations with a positive potential, posed on weighted graphs. Assuming an upper bound on the Laplacian of the distance and a suitable weighted space-time volume growth condition, we show that no global solutions exists. We also discuss the optimality of the hypotheses, thus recovering a critical exponent phenomenon of Fujita type.

Uniqueness of critical metrics for a quadratic curvature functional

In this paper we prove a new rigidity results for complete, possibly non-compact, critical metrics of the quadratic curvature functional $\mathfrak{S}^2 = \int R_g^{2} dV_g$: we show that critical metrics $(M^n, g)$ with finite energy are always scalar flat, i.e. global minima, provided $n\geq 10$.

A Liouville theorem in the Heisenberg group

In this paper we classify positive solutions to the critical semilinear elliptic equation in $\mathbb{H}^n$. We prove that they are the Jerison-Lee's bubbles, provided $n=1$ or $n\geq 2$ and a suitable control at infinity holds. The proofs are based on a classical Jerison-Lee's differential identity and on pointwise/integral estimates recently obtained for critical semilinear and quasilinear elliptic equations in $\mathbb{R}^n$. In particular, the result in $\mathbb{H}^1$ can be seen as the analogue of the celebrated Caffarelli-Gidas-Spruck classification theorem.

Blow-up for semilinear parabolic equations in cones of the hyperbolic space

We investigate existence and nonexistence of global in time nonnegative solutions to the semilinear heat equation, with a reaction term of the type $e^{μt}u^p$ ($μ\in\mathbb{R}, p>1$), posed on cones of the hyperbolic space. Under a certain assumption on $μ$ and $p$, related to the bottom of the spectrum of $-Δ$ in $\mathbb H^n$, we prove that any solution blows up in finite time, for any nontrivial nonnegative initial datum. Instead, if the parameters $μ$ and $p$ satisfy the opposite condition we have: (a) blow-up when the initial datum is large enough, (b) existence of global solutions when the initial datum is small enough. Hence our conditions on the parameters $μ$ and $p$ are optimal. We see that blow-up and global existence do not depend on the amplitude of the cone. This is very different from what happens in the Euclidean setting, and it is essentially due to a specific geometric feature of $\mathbb H^n$.

Nonexistence of solutions to quasilinear parabolic equations with a potential in bounded domains

We are concerned with nonexistence results for a class of quasilinear parabolic differential problems with a potential in $Ω\times(0,+\infty)$, where $Ω$ is a bounded domain. In particular, we investigate how the behavior of the potential near the boundary of the domain and the power nonlinearity affect the nonexistence of solutions. Particular attention is devoted to the special case of the semilinear parabolic problem, for which we show that the critical rate of growth of the potential near the boundary ensuring nonexistence is sharp.

An Improved Compact Embedding Theorem for Degenerate Sobolev Spaces

This short note investigates the compact embedding of degenerate matrix weighted Sobolev spaces into weighted Lebesgue spaces. The Sobolev spaces explored are defined as the abstract completion of Lipschitz functions in a bounded domain $Ω$ with respect to the norm: $$\|f\|_{QH^{1,p}(v,μ;Ω)} = \|f\|_{L^p_v(Ω)} + \|\nabla f\|_{\mathcal{L}^p_Q(μ;Ω)}$$ where the weight $v$ is comparable to a power of the pointwise operator norm of the matrix valued function $Q=Q(x)$ in $Ω$. Following our main theorem, we give an explicit application where degeneracy is controlled through an ellipticity condition of the form $$w(x)|ξ|^p \leq \left(ξ\cdot Q(x)ξ\right)^{p/2}\leq τ(x)|ξ|^p$$ for a pair of $p$-admissible weights $w\leq τ$ in $Ω$. We also give explicit examples demonstrating the sharpness of our hypotheses.

Four dimensional closed manifolds admit a weak harmonic Weyl metric

On four-dimensional closed manifolds we introduce a class of canonical Riemannian metrics, that we call weak harmonic Weyl metrics, defined as critical points in the conformal class of a quadratic functional involving the norm of the divergence of the Weyl tensor. This class includes Einstein and, more in general, harmonic Weyl manifolds. We prove that every closed four-manifold admits a weak harmonic Weyl metric, which is the unique (up to dilations) minimizer of the functional in a suitable conformal class. In general the problem is degenerate elliptic due to possible vanishing of the Weyl tensor. In order to overcome this issue, we minimize the functional in the conformal class determined by a reference metric, constructed by Aubin, with nowhere vanishing Weyl tensor. Moreover, we show that anti-self-dual metrics with positive Yamabe invariant can be characterized by pinching conditions involving suitable quadratic Riemannian functionals.

Nonexistence for hyperbolic problems on Riemannian manifolds

We establish necessary conditions for the existence of solutions to a class of semilinear hyperbolic problems on complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds, extending some nonexistence results for the wave operator with power nonlinearity on the whole Euclidean space. A general weight function depending on spacetime is allowed in front of the power nonlinearity.

Elliptic and parabolic equations with Dirichlet conditions at infinity on Riemannian manifolds

We investigate existence and uniqueness of bounded solutions of parabolic equations with unbounded coefficients in $M\times \mathbb R_+$, where $M$ is a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold. Under specific assumptions, we establish existence of solutions satisfying prescribed conditions at infinity, depending on the direction along which infinity is approached. Moreover, the large-time behavior of such solutions is studied. We consider also elliptic equations on $M$ with similar conditions at infinity.

On the stability of solutions of semilinear elliptic equations with Robin boundary conditions on Riemannian manifolds

We investigate existence and nonexistence of stationary stable nonconstant solutions, i.e. patterns, of semilinear parabolic problems in bounded domains of Riemannian manifolds satisfying Robin boundary conditions. These problems arise in several models in applications, in particular in Mathematical Biology. We point out the role both of the nonlinearity and of geometric objects such as the Ricci curvature of the manifold, the second fundamental form of the boundary of the domain and its mean curvature. Special attention is devoted to surfaces of revolution and to spherically symmetric manifolds, where we prove refined results.

Harnack's inequality and Hölder continuity for weak solutions of degenerate quasilinear equations with rough coefficients

We continue to study regularity results for weak solutions of the large class of second order degenerate quasilinear equations of the form \begin{eqnarray} \text{div}\big(A(x,u,\nabla u)\big) = B(x,u,\nabla u)\text{ for }x\inΩ\nonumber \end{eqnarray} as considered in our previous paper giving local boundedness of weak solutions. Here we derive a version of Harnack's inequality as well as local Hölder continuity for weak solutions. The possible degeneracy of an equation in the class is expressed in terms of a nonnegative definite quadratic form associated with its principal part. No smoothness is required of either the quadratic form or the coefficients of the equation. Our results extend ones obtained by J. Serrin and N. Trudinger for quasilinear equations, as well as ones for subelliptic linear equations obtained by Sawyer and Wheeden in their 2006 AMS memoir article.

Analytic and geometric properties of generic Ricci solitons

The aim of this paper is to prove some classification results for generic shrinking Ricci solitons. In particular, we show that every three dimensional generic shrinking Ricci soliton is given by quotients of either $\mathds{S}^3$, $\erre\times\mathds{S}^2$ or $\erre^3$, under some very weak conditions on the vector field $X$ generating the soliton structure. In doing so we introduce analytical tools that could be useful in other settings; for instance we prove that the Omori-Yau maximum principle holds for the $X$-Laplacian on every generic Ricci soliton, without any assumption on $X$.

Conformal Ricci Solitons and related Integrability Conditions

In this paper we introduce, in the Riemannian setting, the notion of conformal Ricci soliton, which includes as particular cases Einstein manifolds, conformal Einstein manifolds and (generic and gradient) Ricci solitons. We provide here some necessary integrability conditions for the existence of these structures that also recover, in the corresponding contexts, those already known in the literature for conformally Einstein manifolds and for gradient Ricci solitons. A crucial tool in our analysis is the construction of some appropriate and highly nontrivial $(0,3)$-tensors related to the geometric structures, that in the special case of gradient Ricci solitons become the celebrated tensor $D$ recently introduced by Cao and Chen. A significant part of our investigation, which has independent interest, is the derivation of a number of commutation rules for covariant derivatives (of functions and tensors) and of transformation laws of some geometric objects under a conformal change of the underlying metric.

Existence and Spectral Theory for Weak Solutions of Neumann and Dirichlet Problems for Linear Degenerate Elliptic Operators with Rough Coefficients

In this paper we study existence and spectral properties for weak solutions of Neumann and Dirichlet problems associated to second order linear degenerate elliptic partial differential operators $X$, with rough coefficients of the form $$X=-\text{div}(P\nabla )+{\bf HR}+{\bf S^\prime G} +F$$ in a geometric homogeneous space setting where the $n\times n$ matrix function $P=P(x)$ is allowed to degenerate. We give a maximum principle for weak solutions of $Xu\leq 0$ and follow this with a result describing a relationship between compact projection of the degenerate Sobolev space $QH^{1,p}$ into $L^q$ and a Poincaré inequality with gain adapted to $Q$.
