Quantum supercapacitors

Recently there has been a great deal of interest on the possibility to exploit quantum-mechanical effects to increase the performance of energy storage systems. Here we introduce and solve a model of a quantum supercapacitor. This consists of two chains, one containing electrons and the other one holes, hosted by arrays of double quantum dots, the latter being a building block of experimental architectures for realizing charge and spin qubits. The two chains are in close proximity and embedded in the same photonic cavity, which is responsible for long-range coupling between all the qubits, in the same spirit of the Dicke model. By employing a variational approach, we find the phase diagram of the model, which displays ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases for suitable pseudospin degrees of freedom, together with phases characterized by collective superradiant behavior. Importantly, we show that when transitioning from the ferro/antiferromagnetic to the superradiant phase, the quantum capacitance of the model is greatly enhanced. Our work offers opportunities for the experimental realization of a novel class of quantum supercapacitors with an enhanced storing power stemming from exquisite quantum mechanical effects.

Hong-Ou-Mandel heat noise in the quantum Hall regime

We investigate heat current fluctuations induced by a periodic train of Lorentzian-shaped pulses, carrying an integer number of electronic charges, in a Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer implemented in a quantum Hall bar in the Laughlin sequence. We demonstrate that the noise in this collisional experiment cannot be reproduced in a setup with a single drive, in contrast to what is observed in the charge noise case. Nevertheless, the simultaneous collision of two identical levitons always leads to a total suppression even for the Hong-Ou-Mandel heat noise at all filling factors, despite the presence of emergent anyonic quasi-particle excitations in the fractional regime. Interestingly, the strong correlations characterizing the fractional phase are responsible for a remarkable oscillating pattern in the HOM heat noise, which is completely absent in the integer case. These oscillations can be related to the recently predicted crystallization of levitons in the fractional quantum Hall regime.

Crystallization of Levitons in the fractional quantum Hall regime

Using a periodic train of Lorentzian voltage pulses, which generates soliton-like electronic excitations called Levitons, we investigate the charge density backscattered off a quantum point contact in the fractional quantum Hall regime. We find a regular pattern of peaks and valleys, reminiscent of analogous self-organization recently observed for optical solitons in non-linear environments. This crystallization phenomenon is confirmed by additional side dips in the Hong-Ou-Mandel noise, a feature that can be observed in nowadays electron quantum optics experiments.

High-power collective charging of a solid-state quantum battery

Quantum information theorems state that it is possible to exploit collective quantum resources to greatly enhance the charging power of quantum batteries (QBs) made of many identical elementary units. We here present and solve a model of a QB that can be engineered in solid-state architectures. It consists of $N$ two-level systems coupled to a single photonic mode in a cavity. We contrast this collective model ("Dicke QB"), whereby entanglement is genuinely created by the common photonic mode, to the one in which each two-level system is coupled to its own separate cavity mode ("Rabi QB"). By employing exact diagonalization, we demonstrate the emergence of a quantum advantage in the charging power of Dicke QBs, which scales like $\sqrt{N}$ for $N\gg 1$.

Photoassisted shot noise spectroscopy at fractional filling factor

We study the photoassisted shot noise generated by a periodic voltage in the fractional quantum Hall regime. Fluctuations of the current are due to the presence of a quantum point contact operating in the weak backscattering regime. We show how to reconstruct the photoassisted absorption and emission probabilities by varying independently the dc and ac contributions to the voltage drive. This is made possible by the peculiar power-law behavior of the tunneling rates in the chiral Luttinger liquid theory, which allow to approximate the typical infinite sums of the photoassisted transport formalism in a simple and particularly convenient way.

Minimal excitation states for heat transport in driven quantum Hall systems

We investigate minimal excitation states for heat transport into a fractional quantum Hall system driven out of equilibrium by means of time-periodic voltage pulses. A quantum point contact allows for tunneling of fractional quasi-particles between opposite edge states, thus acting as a beam splitter in the framework of the electron quantum optics. Excitations are then studied through heat and mixed noise generated by the random partitioning at the barrier. It is shown that levitons, the single-particle excitations of a filled Fermi sea recently observed in experiments, represent the cleanest states for heat transport, since excess heat and mixed shot noise both vanish only when Lorentzian voltage pulses carrying integer electric charge are applied to the conductor. This happens in the integer quantum Hall regime and for Laughlin fractional states as well, with no influence of fractional physics on the conditions for clean energy pulses. In addition, we demonstrate the robustness of such excitations to the overlap of Lorentzian wavepackets. Even though mixed and heat noise have nonlinear dependence on the voltage bias, and despite the non-integer power-law behavior arising from the fractional quantum Hall physics, an arbitrary superposition of levitons always generates minimal excitation states.

Spin current pumping in helical Luttinger liquids

We study the DC spin current induced into an unbiased quantum spin Hall system through a two-point contacts setup with time dependent electron tunneling amplitudes. By means of two external gates, it is possible to drive a current with spin-preserving and spin-flipping contributions showing peculiar oscillations as a function of pumping frequency, electron-electron interaction and temperature. From its interference patterns as a function of the Fabry-Perot and Aharonov-Bohm phases, it is possible to extract information about the helical nature of the edge states and the intensity of the electron-electron interaction.

Generating and controlling spin-polarized currents induced by a quantum spin Hall antidot

We study an electrically controlled quantum spin Hall antidot embedded in a two-dimensional topological insulating bar. Helical edge states around the antidot and along the edges of the bar are tunnel coupled. The close connection between spin and chirality, typical of helical systems, allows to generate a spin-polarized current flowing across the bar. This current is studied as a function of the external voltages, by varying the asymmetry between the barriers. For asymmetric setups, a switching behavior of the spin current is observed as the bias is increased, both in the absence and in the presence of electron interactions. This device allows to generate and control the spin-polarized current by simple electrical means.

Composite fermions description of fractional topological insulators

We propose a $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ classification of Abelian time-reversal fractional topological insulators in terms of the composite fermions picture. We consider the standard toy model where spin up and down electrons are subjected to opposite magnetic fields and only electrons of the same spin interact via a repulsive force. By applying the composite fermions approach to this time-reversal symmetric system, we are able to obtain a hierarchy of topological insulators with spin Hall conductance $σ_{s}=\frac{e}{2π}\frac{p}{2mp+1} $, being $p,m \in\mathbb{N}$. They show stable edge states only for odd $p$, as a direct consequence of the Kramer's theorem.

Charge tunneling in fractional edge channels

We explain recent experimental observations on effective charge of edge states tunneling through a quantum point contact in the weak backscattering regime. We focus on the behavior of the excess noise and on the effective tunneling charge as a function of temperature and voltage. By introducing a minimal hierarchical model different filling factors, ν=p/(2p+1), in the Jain sequence are treated on equal footing, in presence also of non-universal interactions. The agreement found with the experiments for ν=2/3 and ν=2/5 reinforces the description of tunneling of bunching of quasiparticles at low energies and quantitatively defines the condition under which one expects to measure the fundamental quasiparticle charge. We propose high-order current cumulant measurement to cross-check the validity of the above scenario and to better clarify the peculiar temperature behavior of the effective charges measured in the experiments.

Neutral modes edge state dynamics through quantum point contacts

Dynamics of neutral modes for fractional quantum Hall states is investigated for a quantum point contact geometry in the weak-backscattering regime. The effective field theory introduced by Fradkin-Lopez for edge states in the Jain sequence is generalized to the case of propagating neutral modes. The dominant tunnelling processes are identified also in the presence of non-universal phenomena induced by interactions. The crossover regime in the backscattering current between tunnelling of single-quasiparticles and of agglomerates of p-quasiparticles is analysed. We demonstrate that higher order cumulants of the backscattering current fluctuations are a unique resource to study quantitatively the competition between different carrier charges. We find that propagating neutral modes are a necessary ingredient in order to explain this crossover phenomena.

Multiple-quasiparticle agglomerates at ν=2/5

We investigate the dynamics of quasiparticle agglomerates in edge states of the Jain sequence for ν=2/5. Comparison of the Fradkin-Lopez model with the Wen one is presented within a field theoretical construction, focusing on similarities and differences. We demonstrate that both models predict the same universal role for the multiple-quasiparticle agglomerates that dominate on single quasiparticles at low energy. This result is induced by the presence of neutral modes with finite velocity and is essential to explain the anomalous behavior of tunneling conductance and noise through a point contact.

Relevance of multiple-quasiparticle tunneling between edge states at ν=p/(2np+1)

We present an explanation for the anomalous behavior in tunneling conductance and noise through a point contact between edge states in the Jain series $ν=p/(2np+1)$, for extremely weak-backscattering and low temperatures [Y.C. Chung, M. Heiblum, and V. Umansky, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf{91}}, 216804 (2003)]. We consider edge states with neutral modes propagating at finite velocity, and we show that the activation of their dynamics causes the unexpected change in the temperature power-law of the conductance. Even more importantly, we demonstrate that multiple-quasiparticles tunneling at low energies becomes the most relevant process. This result will be used to explain the experimental data on current noise where tunneling particles have a charge that can reach $p$ times the single quasiparticle charge. In this paper we analyze the conductance and the shot noise to substantiate quantitatively the proposed scenario.

Symanzik's Method Applied To The Fractional Quantum Hall Edge States

In this paper we consider an abelian Chern-Simons theory with plane boundary and we show, following Symankiz's quite general approach, how the known results for edge states in the Laughlin series can be derived in a systematic way by the separability condition. Moreover we show that the conserved boundary currents find a natural and explicit interpretation in terms of the continuity equation and the Tomonaga-Luttinger commutation relation for electronic density is recovered.
