M5-branes wrapped on a spindle

We construct supersymmetric $AdS_5\times Σ$ solutions of $D=7$ gauged supergravity, where $Σ$ is a two-dimensional orbifold known as a spindle. These uplift on $S^4$ to solutions of $D=11$ supergravity which have orbifold singularites. We argue that the solutions are dual to $d=4$, $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs that arise from $N$ M5-branes wrapped on a spindle, embedded as a holomorphic curve inside a Calabi-Yau three-fold. In contrast to the usual topological twist solutions, the superconformal R-symmetry mixes with the isometry of the spindle in the IR, and we verify this via a field theory calculation, as well as reproducing the gravity formula for the central charge.

Accelerating Black Holes and Spinning Spindles

We study solutions in the Plebański--Demiański family which describe an accelerating, rotating and dyonically charged black hole in $AdS_4$. These are solutions of $D=4$ Einstein-Maxwell theory with a negative cosmological constant and hence minimal $D=4$ gauged supergravity. It is well known that when the acceleration is non-vanishing the $D=4$ black hole metrics have conical singularities. By uplifting the solutions to $D=11$ supergravity using a regular Sasaki-Einstein $7$-manifold, $SE_7$, we show how the free parameters can be chosen to eliminate the conical singularities. Topologically, the $D=11$ solutions incorporate an $SE_7$ fibration over a two-dimensional weighted projective space, $\mathbb{WCP}^1_{[n_-,n_+]}$, also known as a spindle, which is labelled by two integers that determine the conical singularities of the $D=4$ metrics. We also discuss the supersymmetric and extremal limit and show that the near horizon limit gives rise to a new family of regular supersymmetric $AdS_2\times Y_9$ solutions of $D=11$ supergravity, which generalise a known family by the addition of a rotation parameter. We calculate the entropy of these black holes and argue that it should be possible to derive this from certain ${\cal N}=2$, $d=3$ quiver gauge theories compactified on a spinning spindle with appropriate magnetic flux.

Resolution a la Kronheimer of $\mathbb{C}^3/Γ$ singularities and the Monge-Ampere equation for Ricci-flat Kaehler metrics in view of D3-brane solutions of supergravity

We analyze the relevance of the generalized Kronheimer construction for the gauge-gravity correspondence. We study the general structure of IIB supergravity D3-brane solutions on crepant resolutions $Y$ of singularities $\mathbb{C}^3/Γ$ with $Γ$ a finite subgroup of $SU(3)$. Next we concentrate on another essential item for the D3-brane construction, i.e., the existence of a Ricci-flat metric on $Y$, with particular attention to the case $Γ=\mathbb{Z}_4$. We conjecture that on the exceptional divisor the Kronheimer Kähler metric and the Ricci-flat one, that is locally flat at infinity, coincide. The conjecture is shown to be true in the case of the Ricci-flat metric on ${\rm tot} K_{{\mathbb WP}[112]}$ that we construct, which is a partial resolution of $\mathbb{C}^3/\mathbb{Z}_4$. For the full resolution we have $Y=\operatorname{tot} K_{\mathbb{F}_{2}}$, where $\mathbb{F}_2$ is the second Hizebruch surface. We try to extend the proof of the conjecture to this case using the one-parameter Kähler metric on $\mathbb{F}_2$ produced by the Kronheimer construction as initial datum in a Monge-Ampère (MA) equation. We exhibit three formulations of this MA equation, one in terms of the Kähler potential, the other two in terms of the symplectic potential; in all cases one can establish a series solution in powers of the fiber variable of the canonical bundle. The main property of the MA equation is that it does not impose any condition on the initial geometry of the exceptional divisor, but uniquely determines all the subsequent terms as local functionals of the initial datum. While a formal proof is still missing, numerical and analytical results support the conjecture. As a by-product of our investigation we have identified some new properties of this type of MA equations that we believe to be so far unknown.

D3-branes wrapped on a spindle

We construct supersymmetric $AdS_3\times Σ$ solutions of minimal gauged supergravity in $D=5$, where $Σ$ is a two-dimensional orbifold known as a spindle. Remarkably, these uplift on $S^5$, or more generally on any regular Sasaki-Einstein manifold, to smooth solutions of type IIB supergravity. The solutions are dual to $d=2$, $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ SCFTs and we show that the central charge for the gravity solution agrees with a field theory calculation associated with D3-branes wrapped on $Σ$. Unlike for smooth $Σ$ the superconformal R-symmetry mixes with the $U(1)$ isometry of the spindle.

The asymptotic growth of states of the 4d N=1 superconformal index

We show that the superconformal index of N=1 superconformal field theories in four dimensions has an asymptotic growth of states which is exponential in the charges. Our analysis holds in a Cardy-like limit of large charges, for which the index is dominated by small values of chemical potentials. In this limit we find the saddle points of the integral that defines the superconformal index using two different methods. One method, valid for finite N, is to first take the Cardy-like limit and then find the saddle points. The other method is to analyze the saddle points at large N and then take the Cardy-like limit. The result of both analyses is that the asymptotic growth of states of the superconformal index exactly agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of supersymmetric black holes in the dual AdS$_5$ theory.

The large-$N$ limit of the 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal index

We systematically analyze the large-$N$ limit of the superconformal index of $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal theories having a quiver description. The index of these theories is known in terms of unitary matrix integrals, which we calculate using the recently-developed technique of elliptic extension. This technique allows us to easily evaluate the integral as a sum over saddle points of an effective action in the limit where the rank of the gauge group is infinite. For a generic quiver theory under consideration, we find a special family of saddles whose effective action takes a universal form controlled by the anomaly coefficients of the theory. This family includes the known supersymmetric black hole solution in the holographically dual AdS$_5$ theories. We then analyze the index refined by turning on flavor chemical potentials. We show that, for a certain range of chemical potentials, the effective action again takes a universal cubic form that is controlled by the anomaly coefficients of the theory. Finally, we present a large class of solutions to the saddle-point equations which are labelled by group homomorphisms of finite abelian groups of order $N$ into the torus.

Microscopic origin of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of supersymmetric AdS$_{\bf 5}$ black holes

We present a holographic derivation of the entropy of supersymmetric asymptotically AdS$_5$ black holes. We define a BPS limit of black hole thermodynamics by first focussing on a supersymmetric family of complexified solutions and then reaching extremality. We show that in this limit the black hole entropy is the Legendre transform of the on-shell gravitational action with respect to three chemical potentials subject to a constraint. This constraint follows from supersymmetry and regularity in the Euclidean bulk geometry. Further, we calculate, using localization, the exact partition function of the dual $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFT on a twisted $S^1\times S^3$ with complexified chemical potentials obeying this constraint. This defines a generalization of the supersymmetric Casimir energy, whose Legendre transform at large $N$ exactly reproduces the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the black hole.

Fibred GK geometry and supersymmetric $AdS$ solutions

We continue our study of a general class of $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric $AdS_3\times Y_7$ and $AdS_2\times Y_9$ solutions of type IIB and $D=11$ supergravity, respectively. The geometry of the internal spaces is part of a general family of "GK geometries", $Y_{2n+1}$, $n\ge 3$, and here we study examples in which $Y_{2n+1}$ fibres over a Kähler base manifold $B_{2k}$, with toric fibres. We show that the flux quantization conditions, and an action function that determines the supersymmetric $R$-symmetry Killing vector of a geometry, may all be written in terms of the "master volume" of the fibre, together with certain global data associated with the Kähler base. In particular, this allows one to compute the central charge and entropy of the holographically dual $(0,2)$ SCFT and dual superconformal quantum mechanics, respectively, without knowing the explicit form of the $Y_7$ or $Y_9$ geometry. We illustrate with a number of examples, finding agreement with explicit supergravity solutions in cases where these are known, and we also obtain new results. In addition we present, en passant, new formulae for calculating the volumes of Sasaki-Einstein manifolds.

Toric geometry and the dual of ${\cal I}$-extremization

We consider $d=3$, $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories arising on membranes sitting at the apex of an arbitrary toric Calabi-Yau 4-fold cone singularity that are then further compactified on a Riemann surface, $Σ_g$, with a topological twist that preserves two supersymmetries. If the theories flow to a superconformal quantum mechanics in the infrared, then they have a $D=11$ supergravity dual of the form AdS$_2\times Y_9$, with electric four-form flux and where $Y_9$ is topologically a fibration of a Sasakian $Y_7$ over $Σ_g$. These $D=11$ solutions are also expected to arise as the near horizon limit of magnetically charged black holes in AdS$_4\times Y_7$, with a Sasaki-Einstein metric on $Y_7$. We show that an off-shell entropy function for the dual AdS$_2$ solutions may be computed using the toric data and Kähler class parameters of the Calabi-Yau 4-fold, that are encoded in a master volume, as well as a set of integers that determine the fibration of $Y_7$ over $Σ_g$ and a Kähler class parameter for $Σ_g$. We also discuss the class of supersymmetric AdS$_3\times Y_7$ solutions of type IIB supergravity with five-form flux only in the case that $Y_7$ is toric, and show how the off-shell central charge of the dual field theory can be obtained from the toric data. We illustrate with several examples, finding agreement both with explicit supergravity solutions as well as with some known field theory results concerning ${\cal I}$-extremization.

A geometric dual of $c$-extremization

We consider supersymmetric AdS$_3 \times Y_7$ and AdS$_2 \times Y_9$ solutions of type IIB and $D=11$ supergravity, respectively, that are holographically dual to SCFTs with $(0,2)$ supersymmetry in two dimensions and $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry in one dimension. The geometry of $Y_{2n+1}$, which can be defined for $n\ge 3$, shares many similarities with Sasaki-Einstein geometry, including the existence of a canonical R-symmetry Killing vector, but there are also some crucial differences. We show that the R-symmetry Killing vector may be determined by extremizing a function that depends only on certain global, topological data. In particular, assuming it exists, for $n=3$ one can compute the central charge of an AdS$_3 \times Y_7$ solution without knowing its explicit form. We interpret this as a geometric dual of $c$-extremization in $(0,2)$ SCFTs. For the case of AdS$_2 \times Y_9$ solutions we show that the extremal problem can be used to obtain properties of the dual quantum mechanics, including obtaining the entropy of a class of supersymmetric black holes in AdS$_4$. We also study many specific examples of the type AdS$_3\times T^2 \times Y_5$, including a new family of explicit supergravity solutions. In addition we discuss the possibility that the $(0,2)$ SCFTs dual to these solutions can arise from the compactification on $T^2$ of certain $d=4$ quiver gauge theories associated with five-dimensional Sasaki-Einstein metrics and, surprisingly, come to a negative conclusion.

Toric geometry and the dual of $c$-extremization

We consider D3-brane gauge theories at an arbitrary toric Calabi-Yau 3-fold cone singularity that are then further compactified on a Riemann surface $Σ_g$, with an arbitrary partial topological twist for the global $U(1)$ symmetries. This constitutes a rich, infinite class of two-dimensional $(0,2)$ theories. Under the assumption that such a theory flows to a SCFT, we show that the supergravity formulas for the central charge and $R$-charges of BPS baryonic operators of the dual AdS$_3$ solution may be computed using only the toric data of the Calabi-Yau 3-fold and the topological twist parameters. We exemplify the procedure for both the $Y^{p,q}$ and $X^{p,q}$ 3-fold singularities, along with their associated dual quiver gauge theories, showing that the new supergravity results perfectly match the field theory results obtained using $c$-extremization, for arbitrary twist over $Σ_g$. We furthermore conjecture that the trial central charge $\mathscr{Z}$, which we define in gravity, matches the field theory trial $c$-function off-shell, and show this holds in non-trivial examples. Finally, we check our general geometric formulae against a number of explicitly known supergravity solutions.

Theories of Class F and Anomalies

We consider the 6d (2,0) theory on a fibration by genus g curves, and dimensionally reduce along the fiber to 4d theories with duality defects. This generalizes class S theories, for which the fibration is trivial. The non-trivial fibration in the present setup implies that the gauge couplings of the 4d theory, which are encoded in the complex structures of the curve, vary and can undergo S-duality transformations. These monodromies occur around 2d loci in space-time, the duality defects, above which the fiber is singular. The key role that the fibration plays here motivates refering to this setup as theories of class F. In the simplest instance this gives rise to 4d N=4 Super-Yang-Mills with space-time dependent coupling that undergoes SL(2, Z) monodromies. We determine the anomaly polynomial for these theories by pushing forward the anomaly polynomial of the 6d (2,0) theory along the fiber. This gives rise to corrections to the anomaly polynomials of 4d N=4 SYM and theories of class S. For the torus case, this analysis is complemented with a field theoretic derivation of a U(1) anomaly in 4d N=4 SYM. The corresponding anomaly polynomial is tested against known expressions of anomalies for wrapped D3-branes with varying coupling, which are known field theoretically and from holography. Extensions of the construction to 4d N = 0 and 1, and 2d theories with varying coupling, are also discussed.

F-theory and AdS_3/CFT_2 (2,0)

We continue to develop the program initiated in arXiv:1705.04679 of studying supersymmetric AdS_3 solutions of F-theory and their holographic dual 2d superconformal field theories, which are dimensional reductions of 4d theories with varying coupling. Imposing 2d N=(0,2) supersymmetry, we derive the general conditions on the geometry for Type IIB AdS_3 solutions with varying axio-dilaton and five-form flux. We discuss a class of solutions, which extend AdS_3 x T^2 x M_5 Type IIB backgrounds, to F-theory geometries of the type AdS_3 x K3 x M_5 with varying axio-dilaton characterizing the elliptic fiber of the K3, and describe their dual field theories. For a specific choice of M_5 this corresponds to a family of solutions that are conjectured to be dual to twisted compactifications of 4d N=1 Y^{p,q} quiver gauge theories on a curve with varying coupling. For this setup, we compare the central charges from holography and field theory and find agreement to subleading order in N. Requiring enhanced 2d N=(2,2) supersymmetry we find that the axio-dilaton must be constant. However, if the internal geometry is allowed to be non-compact, we obtain the most general class of Type IIB AdS_5 solutions with varying axio-dilaton, i.e. F-theoretic solutions, that are dual to 4d N=1 SCFTs.

The energy-momentum multiplet of supersymmetric defect field theories

Defects in field theories break translation invariance, resulting in the non-conservation of the energy-momentum tensor in the directions normal to the defect. This violation is known as the displacement operator. We study 4d ${\cal N}=1$ theories with 3d defects preserving 3d ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetry by analyzing the embedding of the 3d superspace in the 4d superspace. We use this to construct the energy-momentum multiplet of such defect field theories, which we call the defect multiplet and show how it incorporates the displacement operator. We also derive the defect multiplet by using a superspace Noether procedure.

Supersymmetry on curved spaces and superconformal anomalies

We study the consequences of unbroken rigid supersymmetry of four-dimensional field theories placed on curved manifolds. We show that in Lorentzian signature the background vector field coupling to the R-current is determined by the Weyl tensor of the background metric. In Euclidean signature, the same holds if two supercharges of opposite R-charge are preserved, otherwise the (anti-)self-dual part of the vector field-strength is fixed by the Weyl tensor. As a result of this relation, the trace and R-current anomalies of superconformal field theories simplify, with the trace anomaly becoming purely topological. In particular, in Lorentzian signature, or in the presence of two Euclidean supercharges of opposite R-charge, supersymmetry of the background implies that the term proportional to the central charge c vanishes, both in the trace and R-current anomalies. This is equivalent to the vanishing of a superspace Weyl invariant. We comment on the implications of our results for holography.

F-theory and AdS_3/CFT_2

We construct supersymmetric AdS_3 solutions in F-theory, that is Type IIB supergravity with varying axio-dilaton, which are holographically dual to 2d N=(0,4) superconformal field theories with small superconformal algebra. In F-theory these arise from D3-branes wrapped on curves in the base of an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold Y_3 and correspond to strings in the 6d N=(1,0) theory obtained from F-theory on Y_3. The non-trivial fibration over the wrapped curves implies a varying coupling of the N=4 Super-Yang-Mills theory on the D3-branes. We compute the holographic central charges and show that these agree with the field theory and with the anomalies of self-dual strings in 6d. We complement our analysis with a discussion of the dual M-theory solutions and a comparison of the central charges.

Localization of supersymmetric field theories on non-compact hyperbolic three-manifolds

We study supersymmetric gauge theories with an R-symmetry, defined on non-compact, hyperbolic, Riemannian three-manifolds, focusing on the case of a supersymmetry-preserving quotient of Euclidean AdS$_3$. We compute the exact partition function in these theories, using the method of localization, thus reducing the problem to the computation of one-loop determinants around a supersymmetric locus. We evaluate the one-loop determinants employing three different techniques: an index theorem, the method of pairing of eigenvalues, and the heat kernel method. Along the way, we discuss aspects of supersymmetry in manifolds with a conformal boundary, including supersymmetric actions and boundary conditions.

Holographic renormalization and supersymmetry

Holographic renormalization is a systematic procedure for regulating divergences in observables in asymptotically locally AdS spacetimes. For dual boundary field theories which are supersymmetric it is natural to ask whether this defines a supersymmetric renormalization scheme. Recent results in localization have brought this question into sharp focus: rigid supersymmetry on a curved boundary requires specific geometric structures, and general arguments imply that BPS observables, such as the partition function, are invariant under certain deformations of these structures. One can then ask if the dual holographic observables are similarly invariant. We study this question in minimal N = 2 gauged supergravity in four and five dimensions. In four dimensions we show that holographic renormalization precisely reproduces the expected field theory results. In five dimensions we find that no choice of standard holographic counterterms is compatible with supersymmetry, which leads us to introduce novel finite boundary terms. For a class of solutions satisfying certain topological assumptions we provide some independent tests of these new boundary terms, in particular showing that they reproduce the expected VEVs of conserved charges.
