Fivebranes and resolved deformed G_2 manifolds

We study supergravity solutions corresponding to fivebranes wrapped on a three-sphere inside a G_2 holonomy manifold. By changing a parameter the solutions interpolate between a G_2 manifold X_i \cong S^3 x R^4 with flux on a three-sphere and a distinct G_2 manifold X_j \cong S^3 x R^4 with branes on another three-sphere. Therefore, these realise a G_2 geometric transition purely in the supergravity context. We can add D2 brane charge by applying a simple transformation to the initial solution and we obtain one-parameter deformations of warped G_2 holonomy backgrounds. These solutions suggest a connection between the N=1 Chern-Simons theory on the fivebranes and the field theory dual to D2 branes and fractional NS5 branes, transverse to the G_2 manifold S^3 x R^4.

Non-Kahler heterotic rotations

We study a supersymmetry-preserving solution-generating method in heterotic supergravity. In particular, we use this method to construct one-parameter non-Kahler deformations of Calabi-Yau manifolds with a U(1) isometry, in which the complex structure remains invariant. We explain how to obtain corresponding solutions to heterotic string theory, up to first order in α', by a modified form of the standard embedding. In the course of the paper we also show that Abelian heterotic supergravity embeds into type II supergravity, and note that the solution-generating method in this context is related to a dipole-type deformation when there is a field theory dual.

The warped, resolved, deformed conifold gets flavoured

We discuss a simple transformation that allows to generate SU(3) structure solutions of Type IIB supergravity with RR fluxes, starting from non-Kahler solutions of Type I supergravity. The method may be applied also in the presence of supersymmetric source branes. We apply this transformation to a solution describing fivebranes wrapped on the two-sphere of the resolved conifold with additional flavour fivebrane sources. The resulting solution is a generalisation of the resolved deformed conifold solution of Butti et al. by the addition of D5 brane and D3 brane sources. We propose that this solution may be interpreted in terms of a combined effect of Higgsing and cascade of Seiberg dualities in the dual field theory.

The unwarped, resolved, deformed conifold: fivebranes and the baryonic branch of the Klebanov-Strassler theory

We study a gravity solution corresponding to fivebranes wrapped on the $S^2$ of the resolved conifold. By changing a parameter the solution continuously interpolates between the deformed conifold with flux and the resolved conifold with branes. Therefore, it displays a geometric transition, purely in the supergravity context. The solution is a simple example of torsional geometry and may be thought of as a non-Kähler analog of the conifold. By U-duality transformations we can add D3 brane charge and recover the solution in the form originally derived by Butti et al. This describes the baryonic branch of the Klebanov-Strassler theory. Far along the baryonic branch the field theory gives rise to a fuzzy two-sphere. This corresponds to the D5 branes wrapping the two-sphere of the resolved conifold in the gravity solution.

AdS_4/CFT_3 duals from M2-branes at hypersurface singularities and their deformations

We construct three-dimensional N=2 Chern-Simons-quiver theories which are holographically dual to the M-theory Freund-Rubin solutions AdS_4 x V_{5,2}/Z_k (with or without torsion G-flux), where V_{5,2} is a homogeneous Sasaki-Einstein seven-manifold. The global symmetry group of these theories is generically SU(2) x U(1) x U(1)_R, and they are hence non-toric. The field theories may be thought of as the n=2 member of a family of models, labelled by a positive integer n, arising on multiple M2-branes at certain hypersurface singularities. We describe how these models can be engineered via generalized Hanany-Witten brane constructions. The AdS_4 x V_{5,2}/Z_k solutions may be deformed to a warped geometry R^{1,2} x T^* S^4/Z_k, with self-dual G-flux through the four-sphere. We show that this solution is dual to a supersymmetric mass deformation, which precisely modifies the classical moduli space of the field theory to the deformed geometry.

Comments on Galilean conformal field theories and their geometric realization

We discuss non-relativistic conformal algebras generalizing the Schrödinger algebra. One instance of these algebras is a conformal, acceleration-extended, Galilei algebra, which arises also as a contraction of the relativistic conformal algebra. In two dimensions, this admits an "exotic" central extension, whereby boosts do not commute. We study general properties of non-relativistic conformal field theories with such symmetry. We realize geometrically the symmetry in terms of a metric invariant under the exotic conformal Galilei algebra, although its signature is neither Lorentzian nor Euclidean. We comment on holographic-type calculations in this background.

Comments on string theory backgrounds with non-relativistic conformal symmetry

We consider non-relativistic conformal quantum mechanical theories that arise by doing discrete light cone quantization of field theories. If the field theory has a gravity dual, then the conformal quantum mechanical theory can have a gravity dual description in a suitable finite temperature and finite density regime. Using this we compute the thermodynamic properties of the system. We give an explicit example where we display both the conformal quantum mechanical theory as well as the gravity dual. We also discuss the string theory embedding of certain backgrounds with non-relativistic conformal symmetry that were recently discussed. Using this, we construct finite temperature and finite density solutions, with asymptotic non-relativistic conformal symmetry. In addition, we derive consistent Kaluza-Klein truncations of type IIB supergravity to a five dimensional theory with massive vector fields.

Symmetry-breaking vacua and baryon condensates in AdS/CFT

We study the gravity duals of symmetry-breaking deformations of superconformal field theories, AdS/CFT dual to Type IIB string theory on AdS_5 x Y where Y is a Sasaki-Einstein manifold. In these vacua both conformal invariance and baryonic symmetries are spontaneously broken. We present a detailed discussion of the supergravity moduli space, which involves flat form fields on asymptotically conical Calabi-Yau manifolds, and match this to the gauge theory vacuum moduli space. We discuss certain linearised fluctuations of the moduli, identifying the Goldstone bosons associated with spontaneous breaking of non-anomalous baryonic symmetries. The remaining moduli fields are related to spontaneous breaking of anomalous baryonic symmetries. We also elaborate on the proposal that computing condensates of baryon operators is equivalent to computing the partition function of a non-compact Euclidean D3-brane in the background supergravity solution, with fixed boundary conditions at infinity.

Moduli spaces of Chern-Simons quiver gauge theories and AdS_4/CFT_3

We analyse the classical moduli spaces of supersymmetric vacua of 3d N=2 Chern-Simons quiver gauge theories. We show quite generally that the moduli space of the 3d theory always contains a baryonic branch of a parent 4d N=1 quiver gauge theory, where the 4d baryonic branch is determined by the vector of 3d Chern-Simons levels. In particular, starting with a 4d quiver theory dual to a 3-fold singularity, for certain general choices of Chern-Simons levels this branch of the moduli space of the corresponding 3d theory is a 4-fold singularity. Our results lead to a simple general method, using existing 4d techniques, for constructing candidate 3d N=2 superconformal Chern-Simons quivers with AdS_4 gravity duals. As simple, but non-trivial, examples, we identify a family of Chern-Simons quiver gauge theories which are candidate AdS_4/CFT_3 duals to an infinite class of toric Sasaki-Einstein seven-manifolds with explicit metrics.

Notes on toric Sasaki-Einstein seven-manifolds and AdS_4/CFT_3

We study the geometry and topology of two infinite families Y^{p,k} of Sasaki-Einstein seven-manifolds, that are expected to be AdS_4/CFT_3 dual to families of N=2 superconformal field theories in three dimensions. These manifolds, labelled by two positive integers p and k, are Lens space bundles S^3/Z_p over CP^2 and CP^1 x CP^1, respectively. The corresponding Calabi-Yau cones are toric. We present their toric diagrams and gauged linear sigma model charges in terms of p and k, and find that the Y^{p,k} manifolds interpolate between certain orbifolds of the homogeneous spaces S^7, M^{3,2} and Q^{1,1,1}.

Sasaki-Einstein Manifolds and Volume Minimisation

We study a variational problem whose critical point determines the Reeb vector field for a Sasaki-Einstein manifold. This extends our previous work on Sasakian geometry by lifting the condition that the manifolds are toric. We show that the Einstein-Hilbert action, restricted to a space of Sasakian metrics on a link L in a Calabi-Yau cone X, is the volume functional, which in fact is a function on the space of Reeb vector fields. We relate this function both to the Duistermaat-Heckman formula and also to a limit of a certain equivariant index on X that counts holomorphic functions. Both formulae may be evaluated by localisation. This leads to a general formula for the volume function in terms of topological fixed point data. As a result we prove that the volume of a Sasaki-Einstein manifold, relative to that of the round sphere, is always an algebraic number. In complex dimension n=3 these results provide, via AdS/CFT, the geometric counterpart of a-maximisation in four dimensional superconformal field theories. We also show that our variational problem dynamically sets to zero the Futaki invariant of the transverse space, the latter being an obstruction to the existence of a Kahler-Einstein metric.

Baryonic branches and resolutions of Ricci-flat Kahler cones

We consider deformations of N=1 superconformal field theories that are AdS/CFT dual to Type IIB string theory on Sasaki-Einstein manifolds, characterised by non-zero vacuum expectation values for certain baryonic operators. Such baryonic branches are constructed from (partially) resolved, asymptotically conical Ricci-flat Kahler manifolds, together with a choice of point where the stack of D3-branes is placed. The complete solution then describes a renormalisation group flow between two AdS fixed points. We discuss the use of probe Euclidean D3-branes in these backgrounds as a means to compute expectation values of baryonic operators. The Y^{p,q} theories are used as illustrative examples throughout the paper. In particular, we present supergravity solutions describing flows from the Y^{p,q} theories to various different orbifold field theories in the infra-red, and successfully match this to an explicit field theory analysis.

Resolutions of non-regular Ricci-flat Kahler cones

We present explicit constructions of complete Ricci-flat Kahler metrics that are asymptotic to cones over non-regular Sasaki-Einstein manifolds. The metrics are constructed from a complete Kahler-Einstein manifold (V,g_V) of positive Ricci curvature and admit a Hamiltonian two-form of order two. We obtain Ricci-flat Kahler metrics on the total spaces of (i) holomorphic C^2/Z_p orbifold fibrations over V, (ii) holomorphic orbifold fibrations over weighted projective spaces WCP^1, with generic fibres being the canonical complex cone over V, and (iii) the canonical orbifold line bundle over a family of Fano orbifolds. As special cases, we also obtain smooth complete Ricci-flat Kahler metrics on the total spaces of (a) rank two holomorphic vector bundles over V, and (b) the canonical line bundle over a family of geometrically ruled Fano manifolds with base V. When V=CP^1 our results give Ricci-flat Kahler orbifold metrics on various toric partial resolutions of the cone over the Sasaki-Einstein manifolds Y^{p,q}.

Dual Giant Gravitons in Sasaki-Einstein Backgrounds

We study the dynamics of a BPS D3-brane wrapped on a three-sphere in AdS_5 x L, a so-called dual giant graviton, where L is a Sasakian five-manifold. The phase space of these configurations is the symplectic cone X over L, and geometric quantisation naturally produces a Hilbert space of L^2-normalisable holomorphic functions on X, whose states are dual to scalar chiral BPS operators in the dual superconformal field theory. We define classical and quantum partition functions and relate them to earlier mathematical constructions by the authors and S.-T. Yau, hep-th/0603021. In particular, a Sasaki-Einstein metric then minimises an entropy function associated with the D3-brane. Finally, we introduce a grand canonical partition function that counts multiple dual giant gravitons. This is related simply to the index-character of the above reference, and provides a method for counting multi-trace scalar BPS operators in the dual superconformal field theory.

Obstructions to the Existence of Sasaki-Einstein Metrics

We describe two simple obstructions to the existence of Ricci-flat Kahler cone metrics on isolated Gorenstein singularities or, equivalently, to the existence of Sasaki-Einstein metrics on the links of these singularities. In particular, this also leads to new obstructions for Kahler-Einstein metrics on Fano orbifolds. We present several families of hypersurface singularities that are obstructed, including 3-fold and 4-fold singularities of ADE type that have been studied previously in the physics literature. We show that the AdS/CFT dual of one obstruction is that the R-charge of a gauge invariant chiral primary operator violates the unitarity bound.

The Geometric Dual of a-maximisation for Toric Sasaki-Einstein Manifolds

We show that the Reeb vector, and hence in particular the volume, of a Sasaki-Einstein metric on the base of a toric Calabi-Yau cone of complex dimension n may be computed by minimising a function Z on R^n which depends only on the toric data that defines the singularity. In this way one can extract certain geometric information for a toric Sasaki-Einstein manifold without finding the metric explicitly. For complex dimension n=3 the Reeb vector and the volume correspond to the R-symmetry and the a central charge of the AdS/CFT dual superconformal field theory, respectively. We therefore interpret this extremal problem as the geometric dual of a-maximisation. We illustrate our results with some examples, including the Y^{p,q} singularities and the complex cone over the second del Pezzo surface.

Toric Geometry, Sasaki-Einstein Manifolds and a New Infinite Class of AdS/CFT Duals

Recently an infinite family of explicit Sasaki-Einstein metrics Y^{p,q} on S^2 x S^3 has been discovered, where p and q are two coprime positive integers, with q<p. These give rise to a corresponding family of Calabi-Yau cones, which moreover are toric. Aided by several recent results in toric geometry, we show that these are Kahler quotients C^4//U(1), namely the vacua of gauged linear sigma models with charges (p,p,-p+q,-p-q), thereby generalising the conifold, which is p=1,q=0. We present the corresponding toric diagrams and show that these may be embedded in the toric diagram for the orbifold C^3/Z_{p+1}xZ_{p+1} for all q<p with fixed p. We hence find that the Y^{p,q} manifolds are AdS/CFT dual to an infinite class of N=1 superconformal field theories arising as IR fixed points of toric quiver gauge theories with gauge group SU(N)^{2p}. As a non-trivial example, we show that Y^{2,1} is an explicit irregular Sasaki-Einstein metric on the horizon of the complex cone over the first del Pezzo surface. The dual quiver gauge theory has already been constructed for this case and hence we can predict the exact central charge of this theory at its IR fixed point using the AdS/CFT correspondence. The value we obtain is a quadratic irrational number and, remarkably, agrees with a recent purely field theoretic calculation using a-maximisation.

Gauge Theories from Toric Geometry and Brane Tilings

We provide a general set of rules for extracting the data defining a quiver gauge theory from a given toric Calabi-Yau singularity. Our method combines information from the geometry and topology of Sasaki-Einstein manifolds, AdS/CFT, dimers, and brane tilings. We explain how the field content, quantum numbers, and superpotential of a superconformal gauge theory on D3-branes probing a toric Calabi-Yau singularity can be deduced. The infinite family of toric singularities with known horizon Sasaki-Einstein manifolds L^{a,b,c} is used to illustrate these ideas. We construct the corresponding quiver gauge theories, which may be fully specified by giving a tiling of the plane by hexagons with certain gluing rules. As checks of this construction, we perform a-maximisation as well as Z-minimisation to compute the exact R-charges of an arbitrary such quiver. We also examine a number of examples in detail, including the infinite subfamily L^{a,b,a}, whose smallest member is the Suspended Pinch Point.
