A remark on the Generalized Hodge Conjecture

Let X be a smooth, projective variety over the field of complex numbers. On the space H of its rational cohomology of degree i we have the arithmetic filtration F^p. On the other hand, on the space of cohomology of degree i of X with complex coefficients we have the Hodge filtration G^p. It is well known that F^p is contained in the intersection of G^p with H, and that, in general, this inclusion is strict. In this paper we propose a natural substitute S^p for the Hodge filtration space G^p such that the intersection of S^p with H is the space F^p of the arithmetic filtration. In particular, S^p is a complex subspace of G^p. This result leaves untouched Grothendieck's Generalized Hodge Conjecture. But the method used here to construct algebraic supports for suitable cohomology classes seems to me of some interest. The main technical tool is the use of semi-algebraic sets, which are available by the triangulation of complex projective algebraic varieties.

On threefolds covered by lines

A classification theorem is given of projective threefolds that are covered by a two-dimensional family of lines, but not by a higher dimensional family.

On smooth rational threefolds of P^5 with rational non-special hyperplane section

It is known that the smooth rational threefolds of P^5 having a rational non-special surface of P^4 as general hyperplane section have degree d=3,... ,7. We study such threefolds X from the point of view of linear systems of surfaces in P^3, looking in each case fosr an explicit description of a birational map from P^3 to X. For d=3,..., 6 we prove that there exists a line L on X such that the projection map of X centered at L is birational; we completely describe the base loci B of the linear systems found in this way and give a description of any such threefold X as a suitable blowing-down of the blowing-up of P^3 along B. If d=7, i.e. if X is a Palatini scroll, we prove that, conversely, a similar projection never exists.

Threefolds in $\Bbb P^5$ with a 3-dimensional family of plane curves

A classification theorem is given of smooth threefolds of $\Bbb P^5$ covered by a family of dimension at least three of plane integral curves of degree $d\geq 2.$ It is shown that for such a threefold $X$ there are two possibilities: \item{(1)} $X$ is any threefold contained in a hyperquadric; \item{(2)} $d\leq 3$ and $X$ is either the Bordiga or the Palatini scroll.
