Core-Shell Nanoparticle Resonances in Near-Field Microscopy Revealed by Fourier-demodulated Full-wave Simulations

We present a detailed investigation of the near-field optical response of core-shell nanoparticles using Fourier-demodulated full-wave simulations, revealing significant modifications to established contrast mechanisms in scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM). Our work examines the complex interplay of geometrical and optical resonances within core-shell structures. Using a finite element method (FEM) simulation closely aligned with the actual s-SNOM measurement processes, we capture the specific near-field responses in these nanostructures. Our findings show that core-shell nanoparticles exhibit unexpected distinct resonance shifts and massively enhanced scattering driven by both core and shell properties. This investigation not only advances the understanding of near-field interactions in complex nanosystems but also provides a refined theoretical framework to accurately predict the optical signatures of nanostructures with internal heterogeneity.

Calibration method for complex permittivity measurements using s-SNOM combining multiple tapping harmonics

Scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) enables sub-diffraction spectroscopy, featuring high sensitivity to small spatial permittivity variations of the sample surface. However, due to the near-field probe-sample interaction, the quantitative extraction of the complex permittivity leads to a computationally demanding inverse problem, requiring further approximation of the system to an invertible model. Black-box calibration methods, similar to those applied to microwave vector network analysers, allow the extraction of the permittivity without detailed electromagnetic modelling of the probe-sample interaction. These methods, however, are typically designed for stationary setups. In contrast, the distance between the sample and the probe tip of the s-SNOM is slowly modulated, which is required for the lock-in detection used to extract the near-field interaction buried in the far-field background. Here we propose an improved calibration method that explicitly takes probe tapping into account. We validate our method for an s-SNOM operating in a mid-infrared spectral range by applying it to measurements of silicon microstructures of different but well characterised doping.

Experimental observation of ABCB stacked tetralayer graphene

In tetralayer graphene, three inequivalent layer stackings should exist, however, only rhombohedral (ABCA) and Bernal (ABAB) stacking have so far been observed. The three stacking sequences differ in their electronic structure, with the elusive third stacking (ABCB) being unique as it is predicted to exhibit an intrinsic bandgap as well as locally flat bands around the K points. Here, we use scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy and confocal Raman microscopy to identify and characterize domains of ABCB stacked tetralayer graphene. We differentiate between the three stacking sequences by addressing characteristic interband contributions in the optical conductivity between 0.28 and 0.56 eV with amplitude and phase-resolved near-field nano-spectroscopy. By normalizing adjacent flakes to each other, we achieve good agreement between theory and experiment, allowing for the unambiguous assignment of ABCB domains in tetralayer graphene. These results establish near-field spectroscopy at the interband transitions as a semi-quantitative tool, enabling the recognition of ABCB domains in tetralyer graphene flakes and therefore, providing a basis to study correlation physics of this exciting phase.
