A cavity-less architecture for high-power integrated frequency combs

Photonic chip-based frequency combs have emerged as a transformative platform, enabling compact, scalable, and high-performance multiwavelength sources with far-reaching impact across science and technology. Most commonly, these sources leverage the cavity enhancement of the nonlinearities to produce a spectrum of equidistant frequency lines via cascaded four-wave mixing in high-quality microresonators pumped with a continuous wave tone. While the presence of the resonator inherently enables low-power threshold operation, it also brings intrinsic limitations in efficiency, tunability, and power per line. Here, we propose and demonstrate a cavity-less approach for the generation of optical frequency combs on-chip, which relies on non-degenerate cascaded four wave mixing in dispersion engineered integrated photonic waveguides. The results presented here enable previously inaccessible regimes of pump-to-comb conversion efficiency, wide-range continuous line-spacing tunability, and power per line for coherent comb states. This work opens new research opportunities in nonlinear integrated photonics and pathways toward high-capacity optical interconnects, scalable photonic AI accelerators, and other power-constrained integrated systems.

The interaction of Kerr nonlinearity with even-orders of dispersion: an infinite hierarchy of solitons

Temporal solitons are optical pulses that arise from the balance of negative group-velocity dispersion and self-phase modulation. For decades only quadratic dispersion was considered, with higher order dispersion thought of as a nuisance. Following the recent reporting of pure-quartic solitons, we here provide experimental and numerical evidence for an infinite hierarchy of solitons that balance self-phase modulation and arbitrary negative pure, even-order dispersion. Specifically, we experimentally demonstrate the existence of solitons with pure-sextic ($β_6$), -octic ($β_8$) and -decic ($β_{10}$) dispersion, limited only by the performance of our components, and show numerical evidence for the existence of solitons involving pure $16^{\rm th}$ order dispersion. Phase-resolved temporal and spectral characterization reveals that these pulses, exhibit increasing spectral flatness with dispersion order. The measured energy-width scaling laws suggest dramatic advantages for ultrashort pulses. These results broaden the fundamental understanding of solitons and present new avenues to engineer ultrafast pulses in nonlinear optics and its applications.

Polychromatic soliton molecules

Soliton molecules, bound states composed of interacting fundamental solitons, exhibit remarkable resemblance with chemical compounds and phenomena in quantum mechanics. Whereas optical molecules composed of two or more temporally locked solitons have been observed in a variety of platforms, soliton molecules formed by bound solitons at different frequencies have only recently been theoretically proposed. Here, we report the observation of polychromatic soliton molecules within a mode-locked laser cavity, achieving the desired dispersion by implementing a spectral pulse-shaper. This system supports two or more coincident solitons with different frequencies, but common group velocities. Our results open new directions of exploration in nonlinear dynamics within systems with complex dispersion and offer a convenient platform for optical analogies to mutual trapping and spectral tunneling in quantum mechanics.

The pure-quartic soliton laser

The generation of ultrashort pulses hinges on the careful management of dispersion. Traditionally, this has exclusively involved second-order dispersion, while higher-order dispersion was treated as a nuisance to be minimized. Here we show that high-order dispersion can be strategically leveraged to access an uncharted regime of ultrafast laser operation. In particular, we demonstrate a mode-locked laser, with an intra-cavity spectral pulse-shaper, that emits pure-quartic soliton pulses, which arise from the interaction of the fourth-order dispersion and the Kerr nonlinearity. Using phase-resolved measurements we demonstrate that the energy of these pulses is proportional to the third power of the inverse pulse duration. This implies a dramatic increase in the energy of ultrashort pulses compared to those emitted by soliton lasers to date. These results not only demonstrate a novel approach to ultrafast lasers, but more fundamentally, they clarify the use of higher-order dispersion for optical pulse control, opening up a plethora of possibilities in nonlinear optics and its applications.

Phase-locking in cascaded stimulated Brillouin scattering

Cascaded stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is a complex nonlinear optical process that results in the generation of several optical waves that are frequency shifted by an acoustic resonance frequency. Four-wave mixing (FWM) between these Brillouin shifted optical waves can create an equally spaced optical frequency comb with a stable spectral phase, i.e. a Brillouin frequency comb (BFC). Here, we investigate phase-locking of the spectral components of BFCs, considering FWM interactions arising from the Kerr-nonlinearity as well as from coupling by the acoustic field. Deriving for the first time the coupled-mode equations that include all relevant nonlinear interactions, we examine the contribution of the various nonlinear processes to phase-locking, and show that different regimes can be obtained that depend on the length scale on which the field amplitudes vary.

Phase-locking in Multi-Frequency Brillouin Oscillator via Four Wave Mixing

Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and Kerr-nonlinear four wave-mixing (FWM) are among the most important and widely studied nonlinear effects in optical fibres. At high powers SBS can be cascaded producing multiple Stokes waves spaced by the Brillouin frequency shift. Here, we investigate the complex nonlinear interaction of the cascade of Stokes waves, generated in a Fabry-Perot chalcogenide fibre resonator through the combined action of SBS and FWM. We demonstrate the existence of parameter regimes, in which pump and Stokes waves attain a phase-locked steady state. Real-time measurements of 40ps pulses with 8GHz repetition rate are presented, confirming short-and long-term stability. Numerical simulations qualitatively agree with experiments and show the significance of FWM in phase-locking of pump and Stokes waves. Our findings can be applied for the design of novel picosecond pulse sources with GHz repetition rate for optical communication systems.

Nonlinear Femtosecond Pulse Reshaping in Waveguide Arrays

We observe nonlinear pulse reshaping of femtosecond pulses in a waveguide array due to coupling between waveguides. Amplified pulses from a mode-locked fiber laser are coupled to an AlGaAs core waveguide array structure. The observed power-dependent pulse reshaping agrees with theory, including shortening of the pulse in the central waveguide.
