Nonlinear balance and exchange of stability in dynamics of solitons, peakons, ramps/cliffs and leftons in a 1+1 nonlinear evolutionary pde

We study exchange of stability in the dynamics of solitary wave solutions under changes in the nonlinear balance in a 1+1 evolutionary partial differential equation related both to shallow water waves and to turbulence. We find that solutions of the equation $ m_t + um_x +b u_xm = νm_{xx} $ with $m = u - α^2 u_{xx}$ for fluid velocity $u(x,t)$ change their behavior at the special values $b=0,\pm1,\pm2,\pm3$.

Integrable hierarchy, $3\times 3$ constrained systems, and parametric and peaked stationary solutions

This paper gives a new integrable hierarchy of nonlinear evolution equations. The DP equation: $m_t+um_x+3mu_x=0, m=u-u_{xx}$, proposed recently by Desgaperis and Procesi \cite{DP[1999]}, is the first one in the negative hierarchy while the first one in the positive hierarchy is:\ $m_t=4(m^{-{2/3}})_x-5(m^{-{2/3}})_{xxx}+ (m^{-{2/3}})_{xxxxx}$. The whole hierarchy is shown Lax-integrable through solving a key matrix equation. To obtain the parametric solutions for the whole hierarchy, we separatedly discuss the negative and the positive hierarchies. For the negative hierarchy, its $3\times3$ Lax pairs and corresponding adjoint representations are nonlinearized to be Liouville-integrable Hamiltonian canonical systems under the so-called Dirac-Poisson bracket defined on a symplectic submanifold of $\R^{6N} $. Based on the integrability of those finite-dimensional canonical Hamiltonian systems we give the parametric solutions of the all equations in the negative hierarchy. In particular, we obtain the parametric solution of the DP equation. Moreover, for the positive hierarchy, we consider the different constraint and use a similar procudure to the negative case to obtain the parametric solutions of the positive hierarchy. In particular, we give the parametric solution of the 5th-order PDE $m_t=4(m^{-{2/3}})_x-5(m^{-{2/3}})_{xxx}+ (m^{-{2/3}})_{xxxxx}$. Finally, we discuss the stationary solutions of the 5th-order PDE, and particularly give its four peaked stationary solutions. The stationary solutions may be included in the parametric solution, but the peaked stationary solutions not. The 5th-order PDE does not have the cusp soliton although it looks like a higher order Harry-Dym equation.

An integrable hierarchy, parametric solution and traveling wave solution

This paper gives an integrable hierarchy of nonlinear evolution equations. In this hierarchy there are the following representative equations: \beqq & & u_t=\pa^5_x u^{-{2/3}}, & & u_t=\pa^5_x\frac{(u^{-{1/3}})_{xx} -2(u^{-{1/6}})_{x}^2}{u}; & & u_{xxt}+3u_{xx}u_x+u_{xxx}u=0. \eeqq The first two are in the positive order hierarchy while the 3rd one is in the negative order hierarchy. The whole hierarchy is shown integrable through solving a key $3\times 3 $ matrix equation. The $3\times3$ Lax pairs and their adjoint representations are nonlinearized to be two Liouville-integrable canonical Hamiltonian systems. Based on the integrability of $6N$-dimensional systems we give the parametric solution of the positive hierarchy. In particular, we obtain the parametric solution of the equation $u_t=\pa^5_x u^{-{2/3}}$. Moreover, we give the traveling wave solution (TWS) of the above three equations. The TWSs of the first two equations have singularity and look like cusp (cusp-like), but the TWS of the 3rd one is continuous. For the 5th-order equation, its parametric solution can not include its singular TWS. We also analyse the Gaussian initial solutions for the equations $u_t=\pa^5_x u^{-{2/3}}$, and $u_{xxt}+3u_{xx}u_x+u_{xxx}u=0.$ One is stable, the other not. Finally, we extend the equation $u_t=\pa^5_x u^{-{2/3}}$ to a large class of equations $ u_t=\partial_x^l u^{-m/n}, l\ge1, n\not=0, m,n \in \Z, $ which still have the singular cusp-like traveling wave solutions.

Commutator-errors in large-eddy simulation

A new formulation is derived for the commutator-errors in large-eddy simulation of incompressible flow. These commutator-errors arise from the application of non-uniform filters to the Navier-Stokes equations. As a consequence, the filtered velocity field is no longer solenoidal. The order of magnitude of the commutator-errors is compared with the divergence of the turbulent stresses. This shows that one can not reduce the size of the commutator-errors independently of the turbulent stress terms by some judicious construction of the filter operator. Similarity modeling for the commutator-errors is presented, including an extension of Bardina's approach and the application of Leray regularization. The performance of the commutator-error parameterization is illustrated with the one-dimensional Burgers equation. For large filter-width variations the Leray approach is shown to capture the filtered flow with better accuracy than is possible with Bardina's approach.

The Camassa-Holm hierarchy, related N-dimensional integrable systems, and algebro-geometric solution on a symplectic submanifold

This paper shows that the Camassa-Holm (CH) spectral problem yields two different integrable hierarchies of nonlinear evolution equations (NLEEs), one is of negative order CH hierachy while the other one is of positive order CH hierarchy. The two CH hierarchies possess the zero curvature representations through solving a key matrix equation. We find that the well-known CH equation is included in the negative order CH hierarchy while a Dym type equation is included in the positive order CH hierarchy. Furthermore, under two constraint conditions between the eigenfunctions and the potentials, the CH spectral problem is cast in: (enumerate) a new Neumann-like N-dimensional system when it is restricted into a symplectic submanifold of $\R^{2N}$ which is proven to be integrable by using the Dirac-Poisson bracket and the r-matrix process; and a new Bargmann-like N-dimensional system when it is considered in the whole $\R^{2N}$ which is proven to be integrable by using the standard Poisson bracket and the r-matrix process. (enumerate) In the paper, we present two $4\times4$ instead of $N\times N$ r-matrix structures. One is for the Neumann-like CH system (not the peaked CH system), while the other one is for the Bargmann-like CH system. The whole CH hierarchy (both positive and negative order) is shown to have the parametric solution which obey the constraint relation. In particular, the CH equation constrained to some symplectic submanifold, and the Dym type equation have the parametric solutions. Moreover, we see that the kind of parametric solution of the CH equation is not gauge equivalent to the peakons. Solving the parametric representation of solution on the symplectic submanifold gives a class of new algebro-geometric solution of the CH equation.

Mean effects of turbulence on elliptic instability in fluids

Elliptic instability in fluids is discussed in the context of the Lagrangian-averaged Navier-Stokes-alpha (LANS$-α$) turbulence model. This model preserves the Craik-Criminale (CC) family of solutions consisting of a columnar eddy and a Kelvin wave. The LANS$-α$ model is shown to preserve the elliptic instability for the inviscid case. However, the model shifts the critical stability angle. This shift increases (resp. decreases) the maximum growth rate for long (resp. short) waves. It also introduces a band of stable CC solutions for short waves.

Regularization modeling for large-eddy simulation

A new modeling approach for large-eddy simulation (LES) is obtained by combining a `regularization principle' with an explicit filter and its inversion. This regularization approach allows a systematic derivation of the implied subgrid-model, which resolves the closure problem. The central role of the filter in LES is fully restored, i.e., both the interpretation of LES predictions in terms of direct simulation results as well as the corresponding subgrid closure are specified by the filter. The regularization approach is illustrated with `Leray-smoothing' of the nonlinear convective terms. In turbulent mixing the new, implied subgrid model performs favorably compared to the dynamic eddy-viscosity procedure. The model is robust at arbitrarily high Reynolds numbers and correctly predicts self-similar turbulent flow development.

Intermittency in the Joint Cascade of Energy and Helicity

The statistics of the energy and helicity fluxes in isotropic turbulence are studied using high resolution direct numerical simulation. The scaling exponents of the energy flux agree with those of the transverse velocity structure functions through refined similarity hypothesis, consistent with Kraichnan's prediction \cite{Kr74}. The helicity flux is even more intermittent than the energy flux and its scaling exponents are closer to those of the passive scalar. Using Waleffe's helical decomposition, we demonstrate that the existence of positive mean helicity flux inhibits the energy transfer in the negative helical modes, a non-passive effect.

Leray simulation of turbulent shear layers

We consider so-called Leray regularization of the convective contributions. This gives rise to a subgrid parameterization which involves both explicit filtering and (approximate) inversion. The Leray model also arises from the alpha-modeling strategy derived via Kelvin's circulation theorem. We study the dynamics associated with the Leray model in a turbulent mixing layer and compare predictions with filtered DNS results and findings due to dynamic (mixed) models. In particular, the kinetic energy, momentum thickness and energy-spectra are analyzed, establishing favorable performance of the Leray model and robustness at arbitrarily high Reynolds number. This is unique for a similarity-type model that does not contain an explicit eddy-viscosity term.

Wave Structures and Nonlinear Balances in a Family of 1+1 Evolutionary PDEs

We study the following family of evolutionary 1+1 PDEs that describe the balance between convection and stretching for small viscosity in the dynamics of 1D nonlinear waves in fluids: \[ m_t + \underbrace{um_x \} _{(-2mm)\hbox{convection}(-2mm)} + \underbrace{b u_xm \} _{(-2mm)\hbox{stretching}(-2mm)} = \underbrace{νm_{xx}\ }_{(-2mm)\hbox{viscosity}}, \quad\hbox{with}\quad u=g*m . \] Here $u=g*m$ denotes $ u(x)=\int_{-\infty}^\infty g(x-y)m(y) dy . $ We study exchanges of stability in the dynamics of solitons, peakons, ramps/cliffs, leftons, stationary solutions and other solitary wave solutions associated with this equation under changes in the nonlinear balance parameter $b$.

Alpha-modeling strategy for LES of turbulent mixing

The $α$-modeling strategy is followed to derive a new subgrid parameterization of the turbulent stress tensor in large-eddy simulation (LES). The LES-$α$ modeling yields an explicitly filtered subgrid parameterization which contains the filtered nonlinear gradient model as well as a model which represents `Leray-regularization'. The LES-$α$ model is compared with similarity and eddy-viscosity models that also use the dynamic procedure. Numerical simulations of a turbulent mixing layer are performed using both a second order, and a fourth order accurate finite volume discretization. The Leray model emerges as the most accurate, robust and computationally efficient among the three LES-$α$ subgrid parameterizations for the turbulent mixing layer. The evolution of the resolved kinetic energy is analyzed and the various subgrid-model contributions to it are identified. By comparing LES-$α$ at different subgrid resolutions, an impression of finite volume discretization error dynamics is obtained.

Transient vortex events in the initial value problem for turbulence

A vorticity surge event that could be a paradigm for a wide class of bursting events in turbulence is studied to examine how the energy cascade is established and how this event could serve as a new test of LES turbulence models. This vorticity surge event is tied to the formation of the energy cascade in a direct numerical simulation by the traditional signatures of a turbulent energy cascade such as spectra approaching -5/3 and strongly Beltramized vortex tubes. A coherent mechanism is suggested by the nearly simultaneous development of a maximum of the peak vorticity $\|ω\|_\infty$, growth of the dissipation, the appearance of a helically aligned local vortex configuration and strong, transient oscillations in the helicity wavenumber spectrum. This coherence is also examined for two LES models, a traditional purely dissipative eddy viscosity model and a modern method (LANS$-α$) that respects the nonlinear transport properties of fluids. Both LES models properly represent the spectral energy and energy dissipation associated with this vorticity surge event. However, only the model that preserves nonlinear fluid transport properties reproduces the helical properties, including Beltrami-like vortex tubes.

Kármán--Howarth Theorem for the Lagrangian averaged Navier-Stokes alpha model

The Kármán--Howarth theorem is derived for the Lagrangian averaged Navier-Stokes alpha (LANS$-α$) model of turbulence. Thus, the LANS$-α$ model's preservation of the fundamental transport structure of the Navier-Stokes equations also includes preservation of the transport relations for the velocity autocorrelation functions. This result implies that the alpha-filtering in the LANS$-α$ model of turbulence does not suppress the intermittency of its solutions at separation distances large compared to alpha.

The Complex Geometry of Weak Piecewise Smooth Solutions of Integrable Nonlinear PDE's of Shallow Water and Dym Type

An extension of the algebraic-geometric method for nonlinear integrable PDE's is shown to lead to new piecewise smooth weak solutions of a class of $N$-component systems of nonlinear evolution equations. This class includes, among others, equations from the Dym and shallow water equation hierarchies. The main goal of the paper is to give explicit theta-functional solutions of these nonlinear PDE's, which are associated to nonlinear subvarieties of hyperelliptic Jacobians. The main results of the present paper are twofold. First, we exhibit some of the special features of integrable PDE's that admit piecewise smooth weak solutions, which make them different from equations whose solutions are globally meromorphic, such as the KdV equation. Second, we blend the techniques of algebraic geometry and weak solutions of PDE's to gain further insight into, and explicit formulas for, piecewise-smooth finite-gap solutions.

Stepwise Precession of the Resonant Swinging Spring

The swinging spring, or elastic pendulum, has a 2:1:1 resonance arising at cubic order in its approximate Lagrangian. The corresponding modulation equations are the well-known three-wave equations that also apply, for example, in laser-matter interaction in a cavity. We use Hamiltonian reduction and pattern evocation techniques to derive a formula that describes the characteristic feature of this system's dynamics, namely, the stepwise precession of its azimuthal angle.

An Integrable Shallow Water Equation with Linear and Nonlinear Dispersion

We study a class of 1+1 quadratically nonlinear water wave equations that combines the linear dispersion of the Korteweg-deVries (KdV) equation with the nonlinear/nonlocal dispersion of the Camassa-Holm (CH) equation, yet still preserves integrability via the inverse scattering transform (IST) method. This IST-integrable class of equations contains both the KdV equation and the CH equation as limiting cases. It arises as the compatibility condition for a second order isospectral eigenvalue problem and a first order equation for the evolution of its eigenfunctions. This integrable equation is shown to be a shallow water wave equation derived by asymptotic expansion at one order higher approximation than KdV. We compare its traveling wave solutions to KdV solitons.

Variational Principles of Lagrangian Averaged Fluid Dynamics

The Lagrangian average (LA) of the ideal fluid equations preserves their fundamental transport structure. This transport structure is responsible for the Kelvin circulation theorem of the LA flow and, hence, for its potential vorticity convection and its helicity conservation. Lagrangian averaging also preserves the Euler-Poincaré (EP) variational framework that implies the LA fluid equations. This is expressed in the Lagrangian-averaged Euler-Poincaré (LAEP) theorem proven here and illustrated for the Lagrangian average Euler (LAE) equations.

Navier-Stokes-alpha model: LES equations with nonlinear dispersion

We present a framework for discussing LES equations with nonlinear dispersion. In this framework, we discuss the properties of the nonlinearly dispersive Navier-Stokes-alpha model of incompressible fluid turbulence --- also called the viscous Camassa-Holm equations and the LANS equations in the literature --- in comparison with the corresponding properties of large eddy simulation (LES) equations obtained via the approximate-inverse approach. In this comparison, we identify the spatially filtered NS-alpha equations with a class of generalized LES similarity models. Applying a certain approximate inverse to this class of LES models restores the Kelvin circulation theorem for the defiltered velocity and shows that the NS-alpha model describes the dynamics of the defiltered velocity for this class of generalized LES similarity models. We also show that the subgrid scale forces in the NS-alpha model transform covariantly under Galilean transformations and under a change to a uniformly rotating reference frame. Finally, we discuss in the spectral formulation how the NS-alpha model retains the local interactions among the large scales, retains the nonlocal sweeping effects of large scales on small scales, yet attenuates the local interactions of the small scales amongst themselves.
