A generalization of the Epstein-Penner construction to projective manifolds

We extend the canonical cell decomposition due to Epstein and Penner of a hyperbolic manifold with cusps to the strictly convex setting. It follows that a sufficiently small deformation of the holonomy of a finite volume strictly convex real projective manifold is the holonomy of some nearby projective structure with radial ends, provided the holonomy of each cusp has a fixed point.

Dehn filling and the geometry of unknotting tunnels

Any one-cusped hyperbolic manifold M with an unknotting tunnel tau is obtained by Dehn filling a cusp of a two-cusped hyperbolic manifold. In the case where M is obtained by "generic" Dehn filling, we prove that tau is isotopic to a geodesic, and characterize whether tau is isotopic to an edge in the canonical decomposition of M. We also give explicit estimates (with additive error only) on the length of tau relative to a maximal cusp. These results give generic answers to three long-standing questions posed by Adams, Sakuma, and Weeks. We also construct an explicit sequence of one-tunnel knots in S^3, all of whose unknotting tunnels have length approaching infinity.

On Convex Projective Manifolds and Cusps

This study of properly or strictly convex real projective manifolds introduces notions of parabolic, horosphere and cusp. Results include a Margulis lemma and in the strictly convex case a thick-thin decomposition. Finite volume cusps are shown to be projectively equivalent to cusps of hyperbolic manifolds. This is proved using a characterization of ellipsoids in projective space. Except in dimension 3, there are only finitely many topological types of strictly convex manifolds with bounded volume. In dimension 4 and higher, the diameter of a closed strictly convex manifold is at most 9 times the diameter of the thick part. There is an algebraic characterization of strict convexity in terms of relative hyperbolicity.

Conservative Subgroup Separability For Surfaces With Boundary

If F is a surface with boundary, then a finitely generated subgroup without peripheral elements of G = π_1(F) can be separated from finitely many other elements of G by a finite index subgroup of G corresponding to a finite cover F' with the same number of boundary components as F .

The marked length spectrum of a projective manifold or orbifold

A strictly convex real projective orbifold is equipped with a natural Finsler metric called the Hilbert metric. In the case that the projective structure is hyperbolic, the Hilbert metric and the hyperbolic metric coincide. We prove that the marked Hilbert length spectrum determines the projective structure only up to projective duality. A corollary is the existence of non-isometric diffeomorphic strictly convex projective manifolds (and orbifolds) that are isospectral. The corollary follows from work of Goldman and Choi, and Benoist.

Non compact Euclidean cone 3-manifolds with cone angles less than 2pi

We describe some properties of noncompact Euclidean cone manifolds with cone angles less than c less than 2pi and singular locus a submanifold. More precisely, we describe its structure outside a compact set. As a corollary we classify those with cone angles less than 3pi/2 and those with all cone angles equal to 3pi/2.

The length of unknotting tunnels

We show there exist tunnel number one hyperbolic 3-manifolds with arbitrarily long unknotting tunnel. This provides a negative answer to an old question of Colin Adams.

Virtually Haken fillings and semi-bundles

Suppose that M is a fibered three-manifold whose fiber is a surface of positive genus with one boundary component. Assume that M is not a semi-bundle. We show that infinitely many fillings of M along dM are virtually Haken. It follows that infinitely many Dehn-surgeries of any non-trivial knot in the three-sphere are virtually Haken.

Three-manifolds, virtual homology, and group determinants

We apply representation theory to study the homology of equivariant Dehn-fillings of a given finite, regular cover of a compact 3-manifold with boundary a torus. This yields a polynomial which gives the rank of the part of the homology carried by the solid tori used for Dehn-filling. The polynomial is a symmetrized form of the group determinant studied by Frobenius and Dedekind. As a corollary every such hyperbolic 3-manifold has infinitely many virtually Haken Dehn-fillings.

The Thurston norm via Normal Surfaces

Given a triangulation of a closed, oriented, irreducible, atoroidal 3-manifold every oriented, incompressible surface may be isotoped into normal position relative to the triangulation. Such a normal oriented surface is then encoded by non-negative integer weights, 14 for each 3-simplex, that describe how many copies of each oriented normal disc type there are. The Euler characteristic and homology class are both linear functions of the weights. There is a convex polytope in the space of weights, defined by linear equations given by the combinatorics of the triangulation, whose image under the homology map is the unit ball, B, of the Thurston norm. Applications of this approach include (1) an algorithm to compute B and hence the Thurston norm of any homology class, (2) an explicit exponential bound on the number of vertices of B in terms of the number of simplices in the triangulation, (3) an algorithm to determine the fibred faces of B and hence an algorithm to decide whether a 3-manifold fibres over the circle.

A Combination Theorem for Convex Hyperbolic Manifolds, with Applications to Surfaces in 3-Manifolds

We prove the convex combination theorem for hyperbolic n-manifolds. Applications are given both in high dimensions and in 3 dimensions. One consequence is that given two geometrically finite subgroups of a discrete group of isometries of hyperbolic n-space, satisfying a natural condition on their parabolic subgroups, there are finite index subgroups which generate a subgroup that is an amalgamated free product. Constructions of infinite volume hyperbolic n-manifolds are described by gluing lower dimensional manifolds. It is shown that every slope on a cusp of a hyperbolic 3-manifold is a multiple immersed boundary slope. If a 3-manifold contains a maximal surface group not carried by an embedded surface then it contains the fundamental group of a book of I-bundles with more than two pages.

Large embedded balls and Heegaard genus in negative curvature

We show if M is a closed, connected, orientable, hyperbolic 3-manifold with Heegaard genus g then g >= 1/2 cosh(r) where r denotes the radius of any isometrically embedded ball in M. Assuming an unpublished result of Pitts and Rubinstein improves this to g >= 1/2 cosh(r) + 1/2. We also give an upper bound on the volume in terms of the flip distance of a Heegaard splitting, and describe isoperimetric surfaces in hyperbolic balls.

Dehn surgery and negatively curved 3-manifolds

We show that, for any given 3-manifold M, there are at most finitely many hyperbolic knots K in the 3-sphere and fractions p/q (with q > 22), such that M is obtained by p/q surgery along K. This is a corollary of the following result. If M is obtained by Dehn filling the cusps of a hyperbolic 3-manifold X, where each filling slope has length more than 2 π+ ε, then, for any given M and ε> 0, there are only finitely many possibilities for X and for the filling slopes. In this paper, we also investigate the length of boundary slopes, and sequences of negatively curved metrics on a given 3-manifold.

On the Burau representation modulo a small prime

We discuss techniques for analysing the structure of the group obtained by reducing the image of the Burau representation of the braid group modulo a prime. The main tools are a certain sesquilinear form first introduced by Squier and consideration of the action of the group on a Euclidean building.

The structure of a solvmanifold's Heegaard splittings

We classify isotopy classes of irreducible Heegaard splittings of solvmanifolds. If the monodromy of the solvmanifold can be expressed as a 2 x 2 matrix with 0 in the lower right hand corner (as always is true when the absolute value of the trace is 3), then any irreducible splitting is strongly irreducible and of genus two. If furthermore the absolute value of the trace is 4 or greater, then any two such splittings are isotopic. If the absolute value of the trace is 3 then, up to isotopy, there are exactly two irreducible splittings, their associated hyperelliptic involutions commute, and the product of the involutions is the central involution of the solvmanifold. If the monodromy cannot be expressed as a 2 x 2 matrix with 0 in the lower right hand corner, then the splitting is weakly reducible, of genus three and unique up to isotopy.
