Linear modes in the partially ionized heliosphere plasma

The heliosphere is predominantly a partially ionized plasma that consists of electrons, ions and significant neutral atoms. Nonlinear interactions amongst these species take place through direct collision or charge exchange processes. These interactions modify linear and non linear properties of the plasma. In this work, we develop a one dimensional linear theory to investigate linear instabilities in such system. In our model, the electrons and ions are described by a single fluid compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model and are coupled self-consistently to the neutral fluid via compressible hydrodynamic equations. The coupling is mediated by the charge exchange process. Based on our self-consistent analysis, we find that the charge exchange coupling is more effective at larger length scales, and Alfvén waves are not affected by the charge exchange coupling. By contrast, the fast and slow waves are driven linearly unstable.

Modulation of waves due to charge-exchange collisions in magnetized partially ionized space plasma

A nonlinear time dependent fluid simulation model is developed that describes the evolution of magnetohydrodynamic waves in the presence of collisional and charge exchange interactions of a partially ionized plasma. The partially ionized plasma consists of electrons, ions and a significant number of neutral atoms. In our model, the electrons and ions are described by a single fluid compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model and are coupled self-consistently to the neutral gas, described by the compressible hydrodynamic equations. Both the plasma and neutral fluids are treated with different energy equations that describe thermal energy exchange processes between them. Based on our self-consistent model, we find that propagating Alfvénic and fast/slow modes grow and damp alternately through a nonlinear modulation process. The modulation appears to be robust and survives strong damping by the neutral component.

An analytic model of plasma-neutral coupling in the heliosphere plasma

We have developed an analytic model to describe coupling of plasma and neutral fluids in the partially ionized heliosphere plasma medium. The sources employed in our analytic model are based on a $κ$-distribution as opposed to the Maxwellian distribution function. Our model uses the $κ$-distribution to analytically model the energetic neutral atoms that result in the heliosphere partially ionized plasma from charge exchange with the protons and subsequently produce a long tail which is otherwise not describable by the Maxwellian distribution. We present our analytic formulation and describe major differences in the sources emerging from these two distinct distributions.

From Micro- to Macro-scales in the Heliosphere and Magnetospheres

From a broader perspective, the heliosphere and planetary magnetospheres provide a test bed to explore the plasma physics of the Universe. In particular, the underlying nonlinear coupling of different spatial and temporal scales plays a key role in determining the structure and dynamics of space plasmas and electromagnetic fields. Plasmas and fields exhibit both laminar and turbulent properties, corresponding to either well organized or disordered states, and the development of quantitative theoretical and analytical descriptions from physics based first principles is a profound challenge. Limited observations and complications introduced by geometry and physical parameters conspire to complicate the problem. Dimensionless scaling analysis and statistical methods are universally applied common approaches that allow for the application of related ideas to multiple physical problems. We discuss several examples of the interplay between the scales in a variety of space plasma environments, as exemplified in the presentations of the session \textit{From Micro- to Macro-scales in the Heliosphere and Magnetospheres.}

Dispersive magnetized waves in the solar wind plasma

We derive a generalized linear dispersion relation of waves in a strongly magnetized, compressible, homogeneous and isotropic quasineutral plasma. Starting from a two fluid model, describing distinguishable electron and ion fluids, we obtain a six order linear dispersion relation of magnetized waves that contains effects due to electron and ion inertia, finite plasma beta and angular dependence of phase speed. We investigate propagation characteristics of these magnetized waves in a regime where scale lengths are comparable with electron and ion inertial length scales. This regime corresponds essentially to the solar wind plasma where length scales, comparable with ion cyclotron frequency, lead to dispersive effects. These scales in conjunction with linear waves present a great deal of challenges in understanding the high frequency, small scale dynamics of turbulent fluctuations in the solar wind plasma.

Statistics of magnetic field fluctuations in a partially ionized space plasma

{\em Voyager 1} and {\em 2} data reveals that magnetic field fluctuations are compressive and exhibit a Gaussian distribution in the compressed heliosheath plasma, whereas they follow a lognormal distribution in a nearly incompressible supersonic solar wind plasma. To describe the evolution of magnetic field, we develop a nonlinear simulation model of a partially ionized plasma based on two dimensional time-dependent multifluid model. Our model self-consistently describes solar wind plasma ions, electrons, neutrals and pickup ions. It is found from our simulations that the magnetic field evolution is governed by mode conversion process that leads to the suppression of vortical modes, whereas the compressive modes are amplified. An implication of the mode conversion process is to quench the Alfvénic interactions associated with the vortical motions. Consequently anisotropic cascades are reduced. This is accompanied by the amplification of compressional modes that tend to isotropize the plasma fluctuations and lead to a Gaussian distribution of the magnetic field.

Inhomogeneous whistler turbulence in low beta space plasmas

A nonlinear two dimensional fluid model of whistler turbulence is developed that nonlinearly couples wave magnetic field with electron density perturbations. This coupling leads essentially to finite compressibility effects in whistler turbulence model. Interestingly it is found from our simulations that despite strong compressibility effects, the density fluctuations couple only weakly to the wave magnetic field fluctuations. In a characteristic regime where large scale whistlers are predominant, the weakly coupled density fluctuations do not modify inertial range energy cascade processes. Consequently, the turbulent energy is dominated by the large scale (compared to electron inertial length) eddies and it follows a Kolmogorov-like $k^{-7/3}$ spectrum, where $k$ is a characteristic wavenumber. The weak coupling of the density fluctuations is explained on the basis of a whistler wave parameter that quantifies the contribution of density perturbations in the wave magnetic field.

Dynamics of Alfvén waves in partially ionized astrophysical plasmas

We develop a two dimensional, self-consistent, compressible fluid model to study evolution of Alfvenic modes in partially ionized astrophysical and space plasmas. The partially ionized plasma consists mainly of electrons, ions and significant neutral atoms. The nonlinear interactions amongst these species take place predominantly through direct collision or charge exchange processes. Our model uniquely describe the interaction processes between two distinctly evolving fluids. In our model, the electrons and ions are described by a single fluid compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model and are coupled self-consistently to the neutral fluid via compressible hydrodynamic equations. Both plasma and neutral fluids are treated with different energy equations that adequately enable us to monitor non adiabatic and thermal energy exchange processes between these two distinct fluids. Based on our self-consistent model, we find that the propagation speed of Alfvenic modes in space and astrophysical plasma is slowed down because these waves are damped predominantly due to direct collisions with the neutral atoms. Consequently, energy transfer takes place between plasma and neutral fluids. We describe the mode coupling processes that lead to the energy transfer between the plasma and neutral and corresponding spectral features.

Self-consistent Simulations of Plasma-Neutral in a Partially Ionized Astrophysical Turbulent Plasma

A local turbulence model is developed to study energy cascades in the heliosheath and outer heliosphere (OH) based on self-consistent two-dimensional fluid simulations. The model describes a partially ionized magnetofluid OH that couples a neutral hydrogen fluid with a plasma primarily through charge-exchange interactions. Charge-exchange interactions are ubiquitous in warm heliospheric plasma, and the strength of the interaction depends largely on the relative speed between the plasma and the neutral fluid. Unlike small-length scale linear collisional dissipation in a single fluid, charge-exchange processes introduce channels that can be effective on a variety of length scales that depend on the neutral and plasma densities, temperature, relative velocities, charge-exchange cross section, and the characteristic length scales. We find, from scaling arguments and nonlinear coupled fluid simulations, that charge-exchange interactions modify spectral transfer associated with large-scale energy-containing eddies. Consequently, the turbulent cascade rate prolongs spectral transfer among inertial range turbulent modes. Turbulent spectra associated with the neutral and plasma fluids are therefore steeper than those predicted by Kolmogorov's phenomenology. Our work is important in the context of the global heliospheric interaction, the energization and transport of cosmic rays, gamma-ray bursts, interstellar density spectra, etc. Furthermore, the plasma-neutral coupling is crucial in understanding the energy dissipation mechanism in molecular clouds and star formation processes.

3D Hall MHD Modeling of Solar Wind Plasma Spectra

We present fully self consistent 3D simulations of compressible Hall MHD plasma that describe spectral features relevant to the solar wind plasma. We find that a $k^{-7/3}$ spectrum sets in for the fluctuations that are smaller than ion gyro radius. We further investigate scale dependent anisotropy led by nonlinear processes relevant to the solar wind plasma. Our work is important particularly in understanding the role of wave and nonlinear cascades in the evolution of the solar wind, structure formation at the largest scales.

Whistler Wave Turbulence in Solar Wind Plasma

Whistler waves are present in solar wind plasma. These waves possess characteristic turbulent fluctuations that are characterized typically by the frequency and length scales that are respectively bigger than ion gyro frequency and smaller than ion gyro radius. The electron inertial length is an intrinsic length scale in whistler wave turbulence that distinguishably divides the high frequency solar wind turbulent spectra into scales smaller and bigger than the electron inertial length. We present nonlinear three dimensional, time dependent, fluid simulations of whistler wave turbulence to investigate their role in solar wind plasma. Our simulations find that the dispersive whistler modes evolve entirely differently in the two regimes. While the dispersive whistler wave effects are stronger in the large scale regime, they do not influence the spectral cascades which are describable by a Kolmogorov-like $k^{-7/3}$ spectrum. By contrast, the small scale turbulent fluctuations exhibit a Navier-Stokes like evolution where characteristic turbulent eddies exhibit a typical $k^{-5/3}$ hydrodynamic turbulent spectrum. By virtue of equipartition between the wave velocity and magnetic fields, we quantify the role of whistler waves in the solar wind plasma fluctuations.

Density Spectrum in the Solar Wind Plasma

The density fluctuation spectrum in the solar wind reveals a Kolmogorov-like scaling with a spectral slope of -5/3 in wavenumber space. The energy transfer process in the magnetized solar wind, characterized typically by MHD turbulence, over extended length-scales remains an unresolved paradox of modern turbulence theories, raising the question of how a compressible magnetofluid exhibits a turbulent spectrum that is characteristic of an incompressible hydrodynamic fluid. To address these questions, we have undertaken three-dimensional time dependent numerical simulations of a compressible magnetohydrodynamic fluid describing super-Alfvénic, supersonic and strongly magnetized plasma fluid. It is shown that a Kolmogorov-like density spectrum can develop by plasma motions that are dominated by Alfvénic cascades whereas compressive modes are dissipated.

Dynamics of Fully Nonlinear Drift Wave-Zonal Flow Turbulence System in Plasmas

We present numerical simulations of fully nonlinear drift wave-zonal flow (DW-ZF) turbulence systems in a nonuniform magnetoplasma. In our model, the drift wave (DW) dynamics is pseudo-three-dimensional (pseudo-3D) and accounts for self-interactions among finite amplitude DWs and their coupling to the two-dimensional (2D) large amplitude zonal flows (ZFs). The dynamics of the 2D ZFs in the presence of the Reynolds stress of the pseudo-3D DWs is governed by the driven Euler equation. Numerical simulations of the fully nonlinear coupled DW-ZF equations reveal that shortscale DW turbulence leads to nonlinear saturated dipolar vortices, whereas the ZF sets in spontaneously and is dominated by a monopolar vortex structure. The ZFs are found to suppress the cross-field turbulent particle transport. The present results provide a better model for understanding the coexistence of short- and large-scale coherent structures, as well as associated subdued cross-field particle transport in magnetically confined fusion plasmas.

Spectral features of solar wind turbulent plasma

Spectral properties of a fully compressible solar wind Hall Magnetohydrodynamic plasma are investigated by means of time dependent three dimensional Hall MHD simulations. Our simulations, in agreement with spacecraft data, identify a spectral break in turbulence spectra at characteristic length-scales associated with electromagnetic fluctuations that are smaller than the ion gyroradius. In this regime, our 3D simulations show that turbulent spectral cascades in the presence of a mean magnetic field follow an omnidirectional anisotropic inertial range spectrum close to $k^{-7/3}$. The onset of the spectral break in our simulations can be ascribed to the presence of nonlinear Hall interactions that modify the spectral cascades. Our simulations further show that the underlying charachteristic turbulent fluctuations are spectrally anisotropic, the extent of which depends critically on the local wavenumber. The fluctuations associated with length scales smaller than the ion gyroradius are highly compressible and tend to exhibit a near equipartition in the velocity and magnetic fields. Finally, we find that the orientation of velocity and magnetic field fluctuations critically determine the character of nonlinear interactions that predominantly govern a Hall MHD plasma, like the solar wind.

Turbulent Spectra in the Solar Wind Plasma

Observations of interstellar scintillations at radio wavelengths reveal a Kolmogorov-like scaling of the electron density spectrum with a spectral slope of -5/3 over six decades in wavenumber space. A similar turbulent density spectrum in the solar wind plasma has been reported. The energy transfer process in the magnetized solar wind plasma over such extended length-scales remains an unresolved paradox of modern turbulence theories raising the especially intriguing question of how a compressible magnetized solar wind exhibits a turbulent spectrum that is a characteristic of an incompressible hydrodynamic fluid. To address these questions, we have undertaken three-dimensional time dependent numerical simulations of a compressible magnetohydrodynamic fluid describing super-Alfvénic, supersonic and strongly magnetized plasma. It is shown that the observed Kolmogorov-like (-5/3) spectrum can develop in the solar wind plasma by supersonic plasma motions that dissipate into highly subsonic motion that passively convect density fluctuations.

Numerical study of the magnetic electron drift vortex mode turbulence in a nonuniform magnetoplasma

A simulation study of the magnetic electron drift vortex (MEDV) mode turbulence in a magnetoplasma in the presence of inhomogeneities in the plasma temperature and density, as well as in the external magnetic field, is presented. The study shows that the influence of the magnetic field inhomogeneity is to suppress streamer-like structures observed in previous simulation studies without background magnetic fields. The MEDV mode turbulence exhibits non-universal (non-Kolmogorov type) spectra for different sets of the plasma parameters. In the presence of an inhomogeneous magnetic field, the spectrum changes to a 7/3 power law, which is flatter than without magnetic field gradients. The relevance of this work to laser-produced plasmas in the laboratory is briefly mentioned.

Self-Organization in a Driven Dissipative Plasma System

We perform a fully self-consistent 3-D numerical simulation for a compressible, dissipative magneto-plasma driven by large-scale perturbations, that contain a fairly broader spectrum of characteristic modes, ranging from largest scales to intermediate scales and down to the smallest scales, where the energy of the system are dissipated by collisional (Ohmic) and viscous dissipations. Additionally, our simulation includes nonlinear interactions amongst a wide range of fluctuations that are initialized with random spectral amplitudes, leading to the cascade of spectral energy in the inertial range spectrum, and takes into account large scale as well as small scale perturbation that may have been induced by the background plasma fluctuations, also the non adiabatic exchange of energy leading to the migration of energy from the energy containing modes or randomly injected energy driven by perturbations and further dissipated by the smaller scales. Besides demonstrating the comparative decays of total energy and dissipation rate of energy, our results show the existence of a perpendicular component of current, thus clearly confirming that the self-organized state is non-force free.
