Syzygies of Unimodular Lawrence Ideals

Infinite hyperplane arrangements whose vertices form a lattice are studied from the point of view of commutative algebra. The quotient of such an arrangement modulo the lattice action represents the minimal free resolution of the associated binomial ideal, which defines a toric subvariety in a product of projective lines. Connections to graphic arrangements and to Beilinson's spectral sequence are explored.

Extremal Betti Numbers and Applications to Monomial Ideals

In this short note we introduce a notion of extremality for Betti numbers of a minimal free resolution, which can be seen as a refinement of the notion of Mumford-Castelnuovo regularity. We show that extremal Betti numbers of an arbitrary submodule of a free S-module are preserved when taking the generic initial module. We relate extremal multigraded Betti numbers in the minimal resolution of a square free monomial ideal with those of the monomial ideal corresponding to the Alexander dual simplicial complex and generalize theorems of Eagon-Reiner and Terai. As an application we give easy (alternative) proofs of classical criteria due to Hochster, Reisner, and Stanley.

Cellular Resolutions of Monomial Modules

We construct a canonical free resolution for arbitrary monomial modules and lattice ideals. This includes monomial ideals and defining ideals of toric varieties, and it generalizes our joint results with Irena Peeva for generic ideals.

Monomial Resolutions

Call a monomial ideal M "generic" if no variable appears with the same nonzero exponent in two distinct monomial generators. Using a convex polytope first studied by Scarf, we obtain a minimal free resolution of M. Any monomial ideal M can be made generic by deformation of its generating exponents. Thus, the above construction yields a (usually nonminimal) resolution of M for arbitrary monomial ideals, bounding the Betti numbers of M in terms of the Upper Bound Theorem for Convex Polytopes. We show that our resolutions are DG-algebras, and consider realizability questions and irreducible decompositions.

What can be computed in algebraic geometry?

This paper is a survey of computational issues in algebraic geometry, with particular attention to the theory of Grobner bases and the regularity of an algebraic variety. 1. A geometric introduction to Grobner bases. 2. An algebraic introduction to Grobner bases. 3. Bounds in algebraic geometry, and regularity and complexity questions. 4. Applications.

Grobner bases and extension of scalars

This paper studies the behavior of Grobner bases with respect to extensions of scalars. We prove that an extension of scalars commutes with taking Grobner bases iff the extension is flat. We consider what information can be deduced about fibers of a family, from the Grobner basis of the defining ideal of the family itself. This information can be used to construct algorithms, such as to find locii over which a map is finite, or an isomorphism.
