Representations and cohomology of a family of finite supergroup schemes

We examine the cohomology and representation theory of a family of finite supergroup schemes of the form $(\mathbb G_a^-\times \mathbb G_a^-)\rtimes (\mathbb G_{a(r)}\times (\mathbb Z/p)^s)$. In particular, we show that a certain relation holds in the cohomology ring, and deduce that for finite supergroup schemes having this as a quotient, both cohomology mod nilpotents and projectivity of modules is detected on proper sub-super\-group schemes. This special case feeds into the proof of a more general detection theorem for unipotent finite supergroup schemes, in a separate work of the authors joint with Iyengar and Krause. We also completely determine the cohomology ring in the smallest cases, namely $(\mathbb G_a^- \times \mathbb G_a^-) \rtimes \mathbb G_{a(1)}$ and $(\mathbb G_a^- \times \mathbb G_a^-) \rtimes \mathbb Z/p$. The computation uses the local cohomology spectral sequence for group cohomology, which we describe in the context of finite supergroup schemes.

Local duality for the singularity category of a finite dimensional Gorenstein algebra

A duality theorem for the singularity category of a finite dimensional Gorenstein algebra is proved. It complements a duality on the category of perfect complexes, discovered by Happel. One of its consequences is an analogue of Serre duality, and the existence of Auslander-Reiten triangles for the $\mathfrak{p}$-local and $\mathfrak{p}$-torsion subcategories of the derived category, for each homogeneous prime ideal $\mathfrak{p}$ arising from the action of a commutative ring via Hochschild cohomology.

Cohomology of symplectic groups and Meyer's signature theorem

Meyer showed that the signature of a closed oriented surface bundle over a surface is a multiple of $4$, and can be computed using an element of $H^2(\mathsf{Sp}(2g, \mathbb{Z}),\mathbb{Z})$. Denoting by $1 \to \mathbb{Z} \to \widetilde{\mathsf{Sp}(2g,\mathbb{Z})} \to \mathsf{Sp}(2g,\mathbb{Z}) \to 1$ the pullback of the universal cover of $\mathsf{ Sp}(2g,\mathbb{R})$, Deligne proved that every finite index subgroup of $\widetilde{\mathsf {Sp}(2g, \mathbb{Z})}$ contains $2\mathbb{Z}$. As a consequence, a class in the second cohomology of any finite quotient of $\mathsf{Sp}(2g, \mathbb{Z})$ can at most enable us to compute the signature of a surface bundle modulo $8$. We show that this is in fact possible and investigate the smallest quotient of $\mathsf{Sp}(2g, \mathbb{Z})$ that contains this information. This quotient $\mathfrak{H}$ is a non-split extension of $\mathsf {Sp}(2g,2)$ by an elementary abelian group of order $2^{2g+1}$. There is a central extension $1\to \mathbb{Z}/2\to\tilde{\mathfrak{H}}\to\mathfrak{H}\to 1$, and $\tilde{\mathfrak{H}}$ appears as a quotient of the metaplectic double cover $\mathsf{Mp}(2g,\mathbb{Z})=\widetilde{\mathsf{Sp}(2g,\mathbb{Z})}/2\mathbb{Z}$. It is an extension of $\mathsf{Sp}(2g,2)$ by an almost extraspecial group of order $2^{2g+2}$, and has a faithful irreducible complex representation of dimension $2^g$. Provided $g\ge 4$, $\widetilde{\mathfrak{H}}$ is the universal central extension of $\mathfrak{H}$. Putting all this together, we provide a recipe for computing the signature modulo $8$, and indicate some consequences.

Local duality for representations of finite group schemes

A duality theorem for the stable module category of representations of a finite group scheme is proved. One of its consequences is an analogue of Serre duality, and the existence of Auslander-Reiten triangles for the $\mathfrak{p}$-local and $\mathfrak{p}$-torsion subcategories of the stable category, for each homogeneous prime ideal $\mathfrak{p}$ in the cohomology ring of the group scheme.

Stratification for module categories of finite group schemes

The tensor ideal localising subcategories of the stable module category of all, including infinite dimensional, representations of a finite group scheme over a field of positive characteristic are classified. Various applications concerning the structure of the stable module category and the behavior of support and cosupport under restriction and induction are presented.

Fields of definition for representations of associative algebras

We examine situations, where representations of a finite-dimensional $F$-algebra $A$ defined over a separable extension field $K/F$, have a unique minimal field of definition. Here the base field $F$ is assumed to be a $C_1$-field. In particular, $F$ could be a finite field or $k(t)$ or $k((t))$,where $k$ is algebraically closed. We show that a unique minimal field of definition exists if (a) $K/F$ is an algebraic extension or (b) $A$ is of finite representation type. Moreover, in these situations the minimal field of definition is a finite extension of $F$. This is not the case if $A$ is of infinite representation type or $F$ fails to be $C_1$. As a consequence, we compute the essential dimension of the functor of representations of a finite group, generalizing a theorem of N. Karpenko, J. Pevtsova and the second author.

Stratification and $π$-cosupport: Finite groups

We introduce the notion of $π$-cosupport as a new tool for the stable module category of a finite group scheme. In the case of a finite group, we use this to give a new proof of the classification of tensor ideal localising subcategories. In a sequel to this paper, we carry out the corresponding classification for finite group schemes.

Colocalising subcategories of modules over finite group schemes

The Hom closed colocalising subcategories of the stable module category of a finite group scheme are classified. This complements the classification of the tensor closed localising subcategories in our previous work. Both classifications involve pi-points in the sense of Friedlander and Pevtsova. We identify for each pi-point an endofinite module which both generates the corresponding minimal localising subcategory and cogenerates the corresponding minimal colocalising subcategory.

The variety of subadditive functions for finite group schemes

For a finite group scheme, the subadditive functions on finite dimensional representations are studied. It is shown that the projective variety of the cohomology ring can be recovered from the equivalence classes of subadditive functions. Using Crawley-Boevey's correspondence between subadditive functions and endofinite modules, we obtain an equivalence relation on the set of point modules introduced in our joint work with Iyengar and Pevtsova. This corresponds to the equivalence relation on pi-points introduced by Friedlander and Pevtsova.

A local-global principle for small triangulated categories

Local cohomology functors are constructed for the category of cohomological functors on an essentially small triangulated category T equipped with an action of a commutative noetherian ring. This is used to establish a local-global principle and to develop a notion of stratification, for T and the cohomological functors on it, analogous to such concepts for compactly generated triangulated categories.

Examples of support varieties for Hopf algebras with noncommutative tensor products

The representations of some Hopf algebras have curious behavior: Nonprojective modules may have projective tensor powers, and the variety of a tensor product of modules may not be contained in the intersection of their varieties. We explain a family of examples of such Hopf algebras and their modules, and classify left, right, and two-sided ideals in their stable module categories.

Module categories for group algebras over commutative rings

We develop a suitable version of the stable module category of a finite group G over an arbitrary commutative ring k. The purpose of the construction is to produce a compactly generated triangulated category whose compact objects are the finitely presented kG-modules. The main idea is to form a localisation of the usual version of the stable module category with respect to the filtered colimits of weakly injective modules. There is also an analogous version of the homotopy category of weakly injective kG-modules and a recollement relating the stable category, the homotopy category, and the derived category of kG-modules.

Stratifying triangulated categories

A notion of stratification is introduced for any compactly generated triangulated category T endowed with an action of a graded commutative noetherian ring R. The utility of this notion is demonstrated by establishing diverse consequences which follow when T is stratified by R. Among them are a classification of the localizing subcategories of T in terms of subsets of the set of prime ideals in R; a classification of the thick subcategories of the subcategory of compact objects in T; and results concerning the support of the R-module of homomorphisms Hom_T^*(C,D) leading to an analogue of the tensor product theorem for support varieties of modular representation of groups.

Stratifying modular representations of finite groups

We classify localising subcategories of the stable module category of a finite group that are closed under tensor product with simple (or, equivalently all) modules. One application is a proof of the telescope conjecture in this context. Others include new proofs of the tensor product theorem and of the classification of thick subcategories of the finitely generated modules which avoid the use of cyclic shifted subgroups. Along the way we establish similar classifications for differential graded modules over graded polynomial rings, and over graded exterior algebras.

Colocalizing subcategories and cosupport

The Hom closed colocalizing subcategories of the stable module category of a finite group are classified. Along the way, the colocalizing subcategories of the homotopy category of injectives over an exterior algebra, and the derived category of a formal commutative differential graded algebra, are classified. To this end, and with an eye towards future applications, a notion of local homology and cosupport for triangulated categories is developed, building on earlier work of the authors on local cohomology and support.
