Macdonald formula for curves with planar singularities

We generalize Macdonald's formula for the cohomology of Hilbert schemes of points on a curve from smooth curves to curves with planar singularities: we relate the cohomology of the Hilbert schemes to the cohomology of the compactified Jacobian of the curve. The new formula is a consequence of a stronger identity between certain perverse sheaves defined by a family of curves satisfying mild conditions. The proof makes an essential use of Ngo's support theorem for compactified Jacobians and generalizes this theorem to the relative Hilbert scheme of such families. As a consequence, we generalize part of the Weil conjectures to the Hilbert-zeta function of curves with planar singularities.

Stable quasimaps to GIT quotients

We construct new compactifications with good properties of moduli spaces of maps from nonsingular marked curves to a large class of GIT quotients. This generalizes from a unified perspective many particular examples considered earlier in the literature.

Néron-Severi groups under specialization

André used Hodge-theoretic methods to show that in a smooth proper family X to B of varieties over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0, there exists a closed fiber having the same Picard number as the geometric generic fiber, even if k is countable. We give a completely different approach to André's theorem, which also proves the following refinement: in a family of varieties with good reduction at p, the locus on the base where the Picard number jumps is nowhere p-adically dense. Our proof uses the ``p-adic Lefschetz (1,1) theorem'' of Berthelot and Ogus, combined with an analysis of p-adic power series. We prove analogous statements for cycles of higher codimension, assuming a p-adic analogue of the variational Hodge conjecture, and prove that this analogue implies the usual variational Hodge conjecture. Applications are given to abelian schemes and to proper families of projective varieties.

Quantum cohomology of the Springer resolution

Let G denote a complex, semisimple, simply-connected group. We identify the equivariant quantum differential equation for the cotangent bundle to the flag variety of G with the affine Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov connection of Cherednik and Matsuo. This recovers Kim's description of quantum cohomology of the flag variety itself as a limiting case. A parallel result is proven for resolutions of the Slodowy slices. Extension to arbitrary symplectic resolutions is discussed.

Gromov-Witten theory of A_n-resolutions

We give a complete solution for the reduced Gromov-Witten theory of resolved surface singularities of type A_n, for any genus, with arbitrary descendent insertions. We also present a partial evaluation of the T-equivariant relative Gromov-Witten theory of the threefold A_n x P^1 which, under a nondegeneracy hypothesis, yields a complete solution for the theory. The results given here allow comparison of this theory with the quantum cohomology of the Hilbert scheme of points on the A_n surfaces. We discuss generalizations to linear Hodge insertions and to surface resolutions of type D,E. As a corollary, we present a new derivation of the stationary Gromov-Witten theory of P^1.
