Ricci curvature and minimal hypersurfaces with large Betti numbers

In any dimension $n+1\ge 4$ we construct a sequence of closed $(n+1)$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with positive Ricci curvature admitting embedded two-sided minimal hypersurfaces such that the following hold: (i) any such hypersurface has Morse index one; (ii) the first Betti numbers of the hypsersurfaces are not uniformly bounded along the sequence.

Complete Riemannian 4-manifolds with uniformly positive scalar curvature

We obtain topological obstructions to the existence of a complete Riemannian metric with uniformly positive scalar curvature on certain (non-compact) $4$-manifolds. In particular, such a metric on the interior of a compact contractible $4$-manifold uniquely distinguishes the standard $4$-ball up to diffeomorphism among Mazur manifolds and up to homeomorphism in general. We additionally show there exist uncountably many exotic $\mathbb{R}^4$'s that do not admit such a metric and that any (non-compact) tame $4$-manifold has a smooth structure that does not admit such a metric.

On the topology and index of minimal/Bryant framed surfaces

We study framed surfaces, which are a class of Euclidean minimal and hyperbolic CMC-1 surfaces that generalize immersed minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and Bryant surfaces. For this class we prove a lower bound on the (unrestricted) Morse index by a linear function of the genus, number of ends and number of branch points (counting multiplicity), generalizing a result by Chodosh and the first author. We include as well a description of the 1-to-1 correspondence between Euclidean minimal and Bryant surfaces, known in the literature as Lawson's correspondence.

A note on minimal surfaces with bounded index

For any closed Riemannian three-manifold, we prove that for any sequence of closed embedded minimal surfaces with uniformly bounded index, the genus can only grow at most linearly with respect to the area.

On the topology and index of minimal surfaces II

For an immersed minimal surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$, we show that there exists a lower bound on its Morse index that depends on the genus and number of ends, counting multiplicity. This improves, in several ways, an estimate we previously obtained bounding the genus and number of ends by the index. Our new estimate resolves several conjectures made by J. Choe and D. Hoffman concerning the classification of low-index minimal surfaces: we show that there are no complete two-sided immersed minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ of index two, complete embedded minimal surface with index three, or complete one-sided minimal immersion with index one.

Minimal hypersurfaces with bounded index

We prove a structural theorem that provides a precise local picture of how a sequence of closed embedded minimal hypersurfaces with uniformly bounded index (and volume if the ambient dimension is greater than three) in a Riemannian manifold of dimension at most seven, can degenerate. Loosely speaking, our results show that embedded minimal hypersurfaces with bounded index behave qualitatively like embedded stable minimal hypersurfaces, up to controlled errors. Several compactness/finiteness theorems follows our local picture.

Almost-rigidity and the extinction time of positively curved Ricci flows

We prove that Ricci flows with almost maximal extinction time must be nearly round, provided that they have positive isotropic curvature when crossed with $\mathbb{R}^{2}$. As an application, we show that positively curved metrics on $S^{3}$ and $RP^{3}$ with almost maximal width must be nearly round.

Metrics with non-negative Ricci curvature on convex three-manifolds

We prove that the space of smooth Riemannian metrics on the three-ball with non-negative Ricci curvature and strictly convex boundary is path connected; and, moreover, that the associated moduli space (i.e., modulo orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms of the three-ball) is contractible. As an application, using results of Maximo, Nunes, and Smith [MNS13], we show the existence of properly embedded free boundary minimal annulus on any three-ball with non-negative Ricci curvature and strictly convex boundary.

On the topology and index of minimal surfaces

We show that for an immersed two-sided minimal surface in $R^3$, there is a lower bound on the index depending on the genus and number of ends. Using this, we show the nonexistence of an embedded minimal surface in $R^3$ of index $2$, as conjectured by Choe. Moreover, we show that the index of a immersed two-sided minimal surface with embedded ends is bounded from above and below by a linear function of the total curvature of the surface.

Free boundary minimal annuli in convex three-manifolds

We prove the existence of free boundary minimal annuli inside suitably convex subsets of three-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature $-$ including strictly convex domains of the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3$.

Non-negative Ricci curvature on closed manifolds under Ricci flow

In this short note we show that non-negative Ricci curvature is not preserved under Ricci flow for closed manifolds of dimensions four and above, strengthening a previous result of Knopf in \cite{K} for complete non-compact manifolds of bounded curvature. This brings down to four dimensions a similar result Böhm and Wilking have for dimensions twelve and above, \cite{BW}. Moreover, the manifolds constructed here are \Kahler manifolds and relate to a question raised by Xiuxiong Chen in \cite{XC}, \cite{XCL}.
