Simulation of the isotropic ultra-high energy photons flux in the solar magnetic field and a comparison with observations made by the HAWC and Fermi-LAT observatories

In this contribution we study the possibility of the formation of cosmic ray ensembles (CRE) created by the interaction of ultra-high energy (UHE) photons with the magnetic field of the Sun. The lack of observation of those UHE and the difficulties for their identification given the current methodologies motivates this study. We performed simulations using the PRESHOWER program in order to simulate the expected extensive air showers which might be spatially correlated generated upon entering the Earth's atmosphere. We found characteristic features like very thing and extremely elongates cascades of secondary photons with their corresponding energies spanning the entire cosmic range spectrum. Shower footprints are as large as hundreds of kilometres. An application of this study is the scenario of gamma-ray emission from the vicinity of the Sun as a result of ultra-high energy photon cascading in the solar magnetic field in order to understand recent observations made by the HAWC and Fermi-LAT observatories.

Compact Star Twins with a Dark Matter Core

We present a model of compact stars with a dark matter core. The hadronic equation of state is based on the parity doublet model and does not present a phase transition to quark matter. Instead, a strong first-order phase transition to dark matter described by a constant speed of sound model leads to the scenario of compact star mass twins. Compact star structural properties which obey state-of-the-art measurements and constraints are presented.

Simulation of the isotropic ultra-high energy photons flux in the solar magnetic field

Both the lack of observation of ultra-high energy (UHE) photons and the limitations of the state-of-the-art methodology being applied for their identification motivate studies on alternative approaches to the relevant simulations and the related observational strategies. One of such new approaches is proposed in this report and it concerns new observables allowing indirect identification of UHE photons through cosmic ray phenomena composed of many spatially correlated extensive air showers or primary cosmic rays observed at one time. The study is based on simulations of interactions of UHE photons with the magnetic field of the Sun using the PRESHOWER program with some essential modifications. One of the expected results of such interactions is a generation of cosmic ray ensembles (CRE) in the form of very thin and very elongated cascades of secondary photons of energies spanning the whole cosmic ray energy spectrum. Upon entering the Earth's atmosphere, these cascades or their parts may generate uniquely characteristic walls of spatially correlated extensive air showers, and the effect is expected also in cases when primary UHE photons are not directed towards the Earth. Particle distributions in these multi-primary UHE photon footprints are expected to have thicknesses of the order of meters and elongations reaching even hundreds of millions kilometers, making them potentially observable with a global, multi-experiment approach, including re-exploring of the historical data, with the expected event rate exceeding the capabilities of even very large cosmic ray observatories. The methods described in this report allow for simulating potentially observable quantities related to CRE induced by UHE photons: densities, energy spectra and geographical orientations of particles at the top of the Earth's atmosphere.

Advancing the Landscape of Multimessenger Science in the Next Decade

The last decade has brought about a profound transformation in multimessenger science. Ten years ago, facilities had been built or were under construction that would eventually discover the nature of objects in our universe could be detected through multiple messengers. Nonetheless, multimessenger science was hardly more than a dream. The rewards for our foresight were finally realized through IceCube's discovery of the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux, the first observation of gravitational waves by LIGO, and the first joint detections in gravitational waves and photons and in neutrinos and photons. Today we live in the dawn of the multimessenger era. The successes of the multimessenger campaigns of the last decade have pushed multimessenger science to the forefront of priority science areas in both the particle physics and the astrophysics communities. Multimessenger science provides new methods of testing fundamental theories about the nature of matter and energy, particularly in conditions that are not reproducible on Earth. This white paper will present the science and facilities that will provide opportunities for the particle physics community renew its commitment and maintain its leadership in multimessenger science.

Machine learning aided noise filtration and signal classification for CREDO experiment

The wealth of smartphone data collected by the Cosmic Ray Extremely Distributed Observatory(CREDO) greatly surpasses the capabilities of manual analysis. So, efficient means of rejectingthe non-cosmic-ray noise and identification of signals attributable to extensive air showers arenecessary. To address these problems we discuss a Convolutional Neural Network-based method ofartefact rejection and complementary method of particle identification based on common statisticalclassifiers as well as their ensemble extensions. These approaches are based on supervised learning,so we need to provide a representative subset of the CREDO dataset for training and validation.According to this approach over 2300 images were chosen and manually labeled by 5 judges. The images were split into spot, track, worm (collectively named signals) and artefact classes. Then the preprocessing consisting of luminance summation of RGB channels (grayscaling) andbackground removal by adaptive thresholding was performed. For purposes of artefact rejectionthe binary CNN-based classifier was proposed which is able to distinguish between artefacts andsignals. The classifier was fed with input data in the form of Daubechies wavelet transformedimages. In the case of cosmic ray signal classification, the well-known feature-based classifierswere considered. As feature descriptors, we used Zernike moments with additional feature relatedto total image luminance. For the problem of artefact rejection, we obtained an accuracy of 99%. For the 4-class signal classification, the best performing classifiers achieved a recognition rate of 88%.

Thermodynamic properties of the trigonometric Rosen-Morse potential and applications to a quantum gas of mesons

In this study we work out thermodynamic functions for a quantum gas of mesons described as color-electric charge dipoles. They refer to a particular parametrization of the trigonometric Rosen-Morse potential which allows to be transformed to a perturbation of free quantum motion on the three-dimensional hyper-sphere, $S^{3}$, a manifold that can host only charge-neutral systems, the charge dipoles being the configuration of the minimal number of constituents. To the amount charge neutrality manifests itself as an important aspect of the color confinement in the theory of strong interaction, the Quantum Chromodynamics, we expect our findings to be of interest to the evaluation of temperature phenomena in the physics of hadrons and in particular in a quantum gas of color charge dipoles as are the mesons. The results are illustrated for $f_0$ and $J/ψ$ mesons.

Studying the parameters of the extended $σ$-$ω$ model for neutron star matter

In this work we study the parameters of the extended $σ$-$ω$ model for neutron star matter by a Bayesian analysis on state-of-the-art multi-messenger astronomy observations, namely mass, radius and tidal deformabilities. We have considered three parameters of the model, the Landau mass $m_L$, the nuclear compressibility $K_0$, and the value of the symmetry energy $S_0$, all at saturation density $n_0$. As a result, we are able to estimate the values of the Landau mass of f $m_L = 739\pm17$ MeV, whereas the values of $K_0$ and $S_0$ fall within already known empirical values. Furthermore, for neutron stars we find the most probable value of 13 km $<R_{1.4}<$ 13.5 km and the upper mass limit of $M_{max} \approx 2.2$ M$_{\odot}$.

Was GW170817 a canonical neutron star merger? Bayesian analysis with a third family of compact stars

We investigate the possibility that GW170817 has not been the merger of two conventional neutron stars (NS) but involved at least one if not two hybrid stars with a quark matter core which might even belong to a third family of compact stars. To this end, we develop a Bayesian analysis method for selecting the most probable equation of state (EoS) under a set of constraints from compact star physics, which now also include the tidal deformability from GW170817 and the first result for the mass and radius determination for PSR J0030+0451 by NICER. We apply this method for the first time to a two-parameter family of hybrid EoS based on the DD2 model with nucleonic excluded volume for hadronic matter and the color superconducting generalized nlNJL model for quark matter. The model has a variable onset of deconfinement and can mimic the effects of pasta phases with the possibility of a third family of hybrid stars in the mass-radius ($M-R$) diagram. The main findings of this study are that: 1) the presence of multiple configurations for a given mass (twins) corresponds to a set of disconnected lines in the diagram of tidal deformabilities for binary mergers, so that merger events from the same mass range may result in a probability landscape with different peak positions; 2) the Bayesian analysis with the above observational constraints favors an early onset of the deconfinement transition, at masses of $M_{\rm onset}\le 0.8~M_\odot$ with a $M-R$ relationship that in the range of observed neutron star masses is almost indistinguishable from that of a soft hadronic APR EoS; 3) a few yet fictitious measurements of the NICER experiment with a $1σ$ range that is half of the present value and different mass and radius would change the posterior likelihood so that hybrid EoS with a phase transition onset in the range $M_{\rm onset} = 1.1 - 1.6~M_\odot $ would be favored.

A mixing interpolation method to mimic pasta phases in compact star matter

We present a new method to interpolate between two matter phases that allows for a description of mixed phases and can be used, e.g., for mimicking transitions between pasta structures occuring in the crust as well as in the inner core of compact stars. This interpolation method is based on assuming switch functions that are used to define a mixture of subphases while fulfilling constraints of thermodynamic stability. The width of the transition depends on a free parameter, the pressure increment relative to the critical pressure of a Maxwell construction. As an example we present a trigonometric function ansatz for the switch function together with a pressure increment during the transition. We note that the resulting mixed phase equation of state bears similarities with the appearance of substitutional compounds in neutron star crusts and with the sequence of transitions between different pasta phases in the hadron-to-quark matter transition. We apply this method to the case of a hadron-to-quark matter transition and test the robustness of the compact star mass twin phenomenon against the appearance of pasta phases modeled in this way.

Two novel approaches to the hadron-quark mixed phase in compact stars

First-order phase transitions, like the liquid-gas transition, proceed via formation of structures such as bubbles and droplets. In strongly interacting compact star matter, at the crust-core transition, but also at the hadron-quark transition in the core, these structures form different shapes dubbed "pasta phases". We describe two methods to obtain one-parameter families of hybrid equations of state (EoS) which mimic the thermodynamic behavior of pasta phases in between a low-density hadron and a high-density quark matter phase, thus generalizing the Maxwell construction. The first method replaces the behavior of pressure vs. chemical potential in a finite region around the critical %chemical potential pressure of the Maxwell construction by a polynomial interpolation. The second method uses extrapolations of the hadronic and quark matter EoS beyond the Maxwell point to define a mixing of both with weight functions bounded by finite limits around the Maxwell point. We apply both methods to the case of a hybrid EoS with a strong first order transition that entails the formation of a third family of compact stars and the corresponding mass twin phenomenon. We investigate for both models the robustness of this phenomenon against variation of the single parameter, the pressure increment at the critical chemical potential which quantifies the deviation from the Maxwell construction. We also show sets of results for other compact star observables than mass and radius, namely the moment of inertia and the baryon mass.

Implications from GW170817 and I-Love-Q relations for relativistic hybrid stars

Gravitational wave observations of GW170817 placed bounds on the tidal deformabilities of compact stars allowing one to probe equations of state for matter at supranuclear densities. Here we design new parametrizations for hybrid hadron-quark equations of state, that give rise to low-mass twin stars, and test them against GW170817. We find that GW170817 is consistent with the coalescence of a binary hybrid star--neutron star. We also test and find that the I-Love-Q relations for hybrid stars in the third family agree with those for purely hadronic and quark stars within $\sim 3\%$ for both slowly and rapidly rotating configurations, implying that these relations can be used to perform equation-of-state independent tests of general relativity and to break degeneracies in gravitational waveforms for hybrid stars in the third family as well.

Mixed Phase within the Multi-polytrope Approach to High Mass Twins

We present a multi-polytrope approach to describe high-mass twins fulfilling chiral effective field theory estimations of the neutron star equation state and test it against the appearance of mixed phases at the hadron-quark interface. In addition, we discuss astrophysical applications of this method and expected future measurements that shall further constrain neutron star matter and the understanding of the QCD phase diagram.

Solar neutrinos, helicity effects and new affine gravity with torsion II

The cross section for neutrino helicity spin-flip obtained from a new f(R, T) model of gravitation with dynamic torsion field introduced by one of the authors in [1], is phenomenologically analyzed. To this end, due to the logarithmical energy dependence of the cross section, the relation with the axion decay constant fa (Peccei-Quinn parameter) is used. Consequently the link with the phenomenological energy/mass window is found from the astrophysical and high energy viewpoints. The highest helicity spin-flip cross-sectional values presented in this work coincide with a recent estimation on the axion mass computed in [2] in the framework of finite temperature extended lattice QCD and under cosmological considerations.

Bayesian Analysis of Hybrid EoS based on Astrophysical Observational Data

We perform a Bayesian analysis of probability measures for compact star equations of state using new, disjunct constraints for mass and radius. The analysis uses a simple parametrization for hybrid equations of state to investigate the possibility of a first order deconfinement transition in compact stars. The latter question is relevant for the possible existence of a critical endpoint in the QCD phase diagram under scrutiny in heavy-ion collisions.
