Intricacies of classical de Sitter string backgrounds

Up-to-date, there is no known example of a classical de Sitter solution of string theory, despite several good candidates. We consider here two newly discovered 10d supergravity de Sitter solutions, and analyse in great detail whether they can be promoted to classical string backgrounds. To that end, we identify five requirements to be met, and develop the necessary 10d tools to test the solutions. Eventually, they both fail to verify simultaneously all requirements, in spite of positive partial results. The explicit values obtained offer a clear illustration of the situation, and the analysis highlights various subtleties. We finally discuss the relation to the problem of scale separation.

New de Sitter solutions of 10d type IIB supergravity

We find and study 17 new de Sitter solutions of ten-dimensional (10d) type IIB supergravity with intersecting D5-branes and orientifold O5-planes, as well as a new Minkowski one. These solutions are obtained numerically on 6d group manifolds, the compactness of which is established for 4 of them. We show that all our de Sitter solutions are perturbatively unstable, using a restricted 4d effective theory of four scalar fields. We finally analyse whether our solutions can be promoted to classical string backgrounds. Several of them appear as good candidates, as they satisfy all requirements imposed so far.

The web of swampland conjectures and the TCC bound

We consider the swampland distance and de Sitter conjectures, of respective order one parameters $λ$ and $c$. Inspired by the recent Trans-Planckian Censorship conjecture (TCC), we propose a generalization of the distance conjecture, which bounds $λ$ to be a half of the TCC bound for $c$, i.e. $λ\geq \frac{1}{2}\sqrt{\frac{2}{3}}$ in 4d. In addition, we propose a correspondence between the two conjectures, relating the tower mass $m$ on the one side to the scalar potential $V$ on the other side schematically as $m\sim |V|^{\frac{1}{2}}$, in the large distance limit. These proposals suggest a generalization of the scalar weak gravity conjecture, and are supported by a variety of examples. The lower bound on $λ$ is verified explicitly in many cases in the literature. The TCC bound on $c$ is checked as well on ten different no-go theorems, which are worked-out in detail, and $V$ is analysed in the asymptotic limit. In particular, new results on 4d scalar potentials from type II compactifications are obtained.

Gravitational waves in warped compactifications

We study gravitational waves propagating on a warped Minkowski space-time with D-4 compact extra dimensions. While Kaluza-Klein scales are typically too high for any current detection, we analyse how the warp factor changes the Kaluza-Klein spectrum of gravitational waves. To that end we provide a complete and explicit expression for the warp factor, as well as the Green's function, on a d-dimensional torus. This expression differs from that of braneworld models and should find further uses in string compactifications. We then evaluate the Kaluza-Klein spectrum of gravitational waves. Our preliminary numerical results indicate not only a deviation from the standard toroidal spectrum, but also that the first masses get lowered due to the warp factor.

A new mechanism for symmetry breaking from nilmanifolds

We present a method to obtain a scalar potential at tree level from a pure gauge theory on nilmanifolds, a class of negatively-curved compact spaces, and discuss the spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism induced in the residual Minkowski space after compactification at low energy. We show that the scalar potential is completely determined by the gauge symmetries and the geometry of the compact manifold. In order to allow for simple analytic calculations we consider three extra space dimensions as the minimal example of a nilmanifold, therefore considering a pure Yang-Mills theory in seven dimensions.

Open problems on classical de Sitter solutions

Classical 10d string backgrounds with a 4d de Sitter space-time, D-brane and orientifold sources, are commonly believed to satisfy the following: 1. There is no classical de Sitter solution with parallel sources. 2. Classical de Sitter solutions with intersecting sources are unstable. 3. Classical de Sitter solutions cannot have at the same time a large internal volume, a small string coupling, a bounded number of orientifolds and quantized fluxes. These three conjectures are of particular relevance to the swampland program, and if true, they challenge the connection of string theory to cosmology. We restrict here to a standard solution ansatz for which the problem is well-defined, and we still fail to prove analytically any of these conjectures. While developing new tools and obtaining new constraints, we identify remaining corners of parameter space where counter-examples to these conjectures could be found.

Signatures of extra dimensions in gravitational waves

Considering gravitational waves propagating on the most general 4+N-dimensional space-time, we investigate the effects due to the N extra dimensions on the four-dimensional waves. All wave equations are derived in general and discussed. On Minkowski4 times an arbitrary Ricci-flat compact manifold, we find: a massless wave with an additional polarization, the breathing mode, and extra waves with high frequencies fixed by Kaluza-Klein masses. We discuss whether these two effects could be observed.

Further refining the de Sitter swampland conjecture

We propose an alternative refined de Sitter conjecture. It is given by a natural condition on a combination of the first and second derivatives of the scalar potential. We derive our conjecture in the same weak coupling, semi-classical regime where the previous refined de Sitter conjecture was derived, using the same tools together with a few more assumptions that we discuss. We further test and constrain free parameters in our conjecture using data points of a classical type IIA supergravity setup. Interestingly, our conjecture easily accommodates slow-roll single field inflation with a concave potential, favored by observations. The standard quintessence potential is in tension with our new conjecture, and we thus propose a different type of quintessence model.

New constraints on classical de Sitter: flirting with the swampland

We study the existence and stability of classical de Sitter solutions of type II supergravities with parallel Dp-branes and orientifold Op-planes. Together with the dilaton and volume scalar fields, we consider a third one that distinguishes between parallel and transverse directions to the Dp/Op. We derive the complete scalar potential for these three fields. This formalism allows us to reproduce known constraints obtained in 10d, and to derive new ones. Specifying to group manifolds with constant fluxes, we exclude a large region of parameter space, forbidding de Sitter solutions on nilmanifolds, semi-simple group manifolds, and some solvmanifolds. In the small remaining region, we identify a stability island, where the three scalars could be stabilized in any de Sitter solution. We discuss these results in the swampland context.

Laplacian spectrum on a nilmanifold, truncations and effective theories

Motivated by low energy effective theories arising from compactification on curved manifolds, we determine the complete spectrum of the Laplacian operator on the three-dimensional Heisenberg nilmanifold. We first use the result to construct a finite set of forms leading to an N=2 gauged supergravity, upon reduction on manifolds with SU(3) structure. Secondly, we show that in a certain geometrical limit the spectrum is truncated to the light modes, which turn out to be left-invariant forms of the nilmanifold. We also study the behavior of the towers of modes at different points in field space, in connection with the refined swampland distance conjecture.

On the de Sitter swampland criterion

A new swampland criterion has recently been proposed. As a consequence, it forbids the existence of de Sitter solutions in a low energy effective theory of a quantum gravity. However, there exist classical de Sitter solutions of ten-dimensional (10d) type II supergravities, even though they are unstable. This appears at first sight in contradiction with the criterion. Beyond possible doubts on the validity of these solutions, we propose two answers to this apparent puzzle. A first possibility is that the known 10d solutions always exhibit an energy scale of order or higher than a Kaluza-Klein scale, as we argue. A corresponding 4d low energy effective theory would then differ from the usual consistent truncations, and as we explain, would not admit a de Sitter solution. This would reconcile the existence of these 10d de Sitter solutions with the 4d criterion. A second, alternative possibility is to have a refined swampland criterion, that we propose. It forbids to have both the existence and the stability of a de Sitter solution, while unstable solutions are still allowed.

On classical de Sitter and Minkowski solutions with intersecting branes

Motivated by the connection of string theory to cosmology or particle physics, we study solutions of type II supergravities having a four-dimensional de Sitter or Minkowski space-time, with intersecting Dp-branes and orientifold Op-planes. Only few such solutions are known, and we aim at a better characterisation. Modulo a few restrictions, we prove that there exists no classical de Sitter solution for any combination of D3/O3 and D7/O7, while we derive interesting constraints for intersecting D5/O5 or D6/O6, or combinations of D4/O4 and D8/O8. Concerning classical Minkowski solutions, we understand some typical features, and propose a solution ansatz. Overall, a central information appears to be the way intersecting Dp/Op overlap each other, a point we focus on.

Minkowski flux vacua of type II supergravities

We study flux compactifications of 10d type II supergravities to 4d Minkowski space-time, supported by parallel orientifold Op-planes with 3 $\leq$ p $\leq$ 8. With some restrictions, the 4d Ricci scalar can be written as a negative sum of squares involving BPS-like conditions. Setting all squares to zero provides automatically a solution to 10d equations of motion. This way, we characterize a broad class, if not the complete set, of Minkowski flux vacua. We also conjecture an extension to include non-geometric fluxes. None of our results rely on supersymmetry.

Refining the boundaries of the classical de Sitter landscape

We derive highly constraining no-go theorems for classical de Sitter backgrounds of string theory, with parallel sources; this should impact the embedding of cosmological models. We study ten-dimensional vacua of type II supergravities with parallel and backreacted orientifold Op-planes and Dp-branes, on four-dimensional de Sitter space-time times a compact manifold. Vacua for p=3, 7 or 8 are completely excluded, and we obtain tight constraints for p=4, 5, 6. This is achieved through the derivation of an enlightening expression for the four-dimensional Ricci scalar. Further interesting expressions and no-go theorems are obtained. The paper is self-contained so technical aspects, including conventions, might be of more general interest.

Towards Kaluza-Klein Dark Matter on Nilmanifolds

We present a first study of the field spectrum on a class of negatively-curved compact spaces: nilmanifolds or twisted tori. This is a case where analytical results can be obtained, allowing to check numerical methods. We focus on the Kaluza-Klein expansion of a scalar field. The results are then applied to a toy model where a natural Dark Matter candidate arises as a stable massive state of the bulk scalar.

A no-go theorem for monodromy inflation

We study the embedding of the monodromy inflation mechanism by E. Silverstein and A. Westphal (2008) in a concrete compactification setting. To that end, we look for an appropriate vacuum of type IIA supergravity, corresponding to the minimum of the inflaton potential. We prove a no-go theorem on the existence of such a vacuum, using ten-dimensional equations of motion. Anti-de Sitter and Minkowski vacua are ruled out; de Sitter vacua are not excluded, but have a lower bound on their cosmological constant which is too high for phenomenology.

New supersymmetric vacua on solvmanifolds

We obtain new supersymmetric flux vacua of type II supergravities on four-dimensional Minkowski times six-dimensional solvmanifolds. The orientifold O4, O5, O6, O7, or O8-planes and D-branes are localized. All vacua are in addition not T-dual to a vacuum on the torus. The corresponding solvmanifolds are proven to be Calabi-Yau, with explicit metrics. Other Ricci flat solvmanifolds are shown to be only Kähler.

Non-geometric fluxes versus (non)-geometry

Non-geometry has been introduced when considering a new type of string backgrounds, for which stringy symmetries serve as transition functions between patches of the target space. Then, some terms in the potential of four-dimensional gauged supergravities, generated by so-called non-geometric fluxes, have been argued to find a higher-dimensional origin in these backgrounds, even if a standard compactification on those cannot be made. We present here recent results clarifying the relation between these two settings. Thanks to a field redefinition, we reformulate the NSNS Lagrangian in such a way that the non-geometric fluxes appear in ten dimensions. In addition, if an NSNS field configuration is non-geometric, its reformulation in terms of the new fields can restore a standard geometry. A dimensional reduction is then possible, and leads to the non-geometric terms in the four-dimensional potential. Reformulating similarly doubled field theory, we get a better understanding of the role of the non-geometric fluxes, and rewrite the Lagrangian in a manifestly diffeomorphism-covariant manner. We finally discuss the relevance of the field redefinition and the non-geometric fluxes when studying the non-commutativity of string coordinates.
