Universal relations for rapidly rotating cold and hot hybrid star

Several global parameters of compact stars are related via empirical relations, which are (nearly) independent of the underlying equation of state (EoS) of dense matter and, therefore, are said to be universal. We investigate the universality of relations that express the maximum mass and the radius of non-rotating and maximally rapidly rotating configurations, as well as their moment of inertia, in terms of the compactness of the star. For this, we first utilize a collection of cold (zero-temperature) and hot (isentropic) nucleonic EoS and confirm that the universal relations are holding for our collection of EoS. We then go on, to add to our collection and test for the same universality models of EoS that admit a strong first-order phase transition from nucleonic to deconfined quark matter. Also in this case we find that the universal relations hold, in particular for hot, isentropic hybrid stars. By fitting the universal relations to our computed data, we determine the coefficients entering these relations and the accuracy to which they hold.

Constraining the onset density of the hadron-quark phase transition with gravitational-wave observations

We study the possible occurrence of the hadron-quark phase transition (PT) during the merging of neutron star binaries by hydrodynamical simulations employing a set of temperature dependent hybrid equations of state (EoSs). Following previous work we describe an unambiguous and measurable signature of deconfined quark matter in the gravitational-wave (GW) signal of neutron star binary mergers including equal-mass and unequal-mass systems of different total binary mass. The softening of the EoS by the PT at higher densities, i.e. after merging, leads to a characteristic increase of the dominant postmerger GW frequency f_peak relative to the tidal deformability Lambda inferred during the premerger inspiral phase. Hence, measuring such an increase of the postmerger frequency provides evidence for the presence of a strong PT. If the postmerger frequency and the tidal deformability are compatible with results from purely baryonic EoS models yielding very tight relations between f_peak and Lambda, a strong PT can be excluded up to a certain density. We find tight correlations of f_peak and Lambda with the maximum density during the early postmerger remnant evolution. These GW observables thus inform about the density regime which is probed by the remnant and its GW emission. Exploiting such relations we devise a directly applicable, concrete procedure to constrain the onset density of the QCD PT from future GW measurements. We point out two interesting scenarios: if no indications for a PT are inferred from a GW detection, our procedure yields a lower limit on the onset density of the hadron quark PT. On the contrary, if a merger event reveals evidence for the occurrence of deconfined quark matter, the inferred GW parameters set an upper limit on the PT onset density. (abridged)

Equation of state constraints from the threshold binary mass for prompt collapse of neutron star mergers

Using hydrodynamical simulations for a large set of high-density matter equations of state (EoSs) we systematically determine the threshold mass M_thres for prompt black-hole formation in equal-mass and asymmetric neutron star (NS) mergers. We devise the so far most direct, general and accurate method to determine the unknown maximum mass of nonrotating NSs from merger observations revealing M_thres. Considering hybrid EoSs with hadron-quark phase transition, we identify a new, observable signature of quark matter in NS mergers. Furthermore, our findings have direct applications in gravitational wave searches, kilonova interpretations and multi-messenger constraints on NS properties.

Kinetic equation approach to graphene in strong external fields

The report presents the results of using the nonperturbative kinetic approach to describe the excitation of plasma oscillations in a graphene monolayer. As examples the constant electric field as well as an electric field of short high-frequency pulses are considered. The dependence of the induced conduction and polarization currents characteristics on the pulse intensity, pulse duration, and polarization is investigated. The characteristics of secondary electromagnetic radiation resulting from the alternating currents is investigated. The nonlinear response to the external electric field characterizes graphene as an active medium. Qualitative agreement is obtained with the existing experimental result of measurements of currents in constant electric fields and radiation from graphene in the case of excitation by means of the infrared and optical pulses.

Identifying a first-order phase transition in neutron star mergers through gravitational waves

We identify an observable imprint of a first-order hadron-quark phase transition at supranuclear densities on the gravitational-wave (GW) emission of neutron star mergers. Specifically, we show that the dominant postmerger GW frequency f_peak may exhibit a significant deviation from an empirical relation between f_peak and the tidal deformability if a strong first-order phase transition leads to the formation of a gravitationally stable extended quark matter core in the postmerger remnant. A comparison of the GW signatures from a large, representative sample of microphysical, purely hadronic equations of state indicates that this imprint is only observed in those systems which undergo a strong first-order phase transition. Such a shift of the dominant postmerger GW frequency can be revealed by future GW observations, which would provide evidence for the existence of a strong first-order phase transition in the interior of neutron stars.

Quark deconfinement as supernova explosion engine for massive blue-supergiant stars

Blue-supergiant stars develop into core-collapse supernovae --- one of the most energetic outbursts in the universe --- when all nuclear burning fuel is exhausted in the stellar core. Previous attempts failed to explain observed explosions of such stars which have a zero-age main sequence mass of 50~M$_\odot$ or more. Here we exploit the largely uncertain state of matter at high density, and connect the modeling of such stellar explosions with a first-order phase transition from nuclear matter to the quark-gluon plasma. The resulting energetic supernova explosions can account for a large variety of lightcurves, from peculiar type II to super-luminous events. The remnants are neutron stars with quark matter core, known as hybrid stars, of about 2~M$_\odot$ at birth. A galactic event of this kind could be observable due to the release of a second neutrino burst. Its observation would confirm such a first-order phase transition at densities relevant for astrophysics.

Implications from GW170817 and I-Love-Q relations for relativistic hybrid stars

Gravitational wave observations of GW170817 placed bounds on the tidal deformabilities of compact stars allowing one to probe equations of state for matter at supranuclear densities. Here we design new parametrizations for hybrid hadron-quark equations of state, that give rise to low-mass twin stars, and test them against GW170817. We find that GW170817 is consistent with the coalescence of a binary hybrid star--neutron star. We also test and find that the I-Love-Q relations for hybrid stars in the third family agree with those for purely hadronic and quark stars within $\sim 3\%$ for both slowly and rapidly rotating configurations, implying that these relations can be used to perform equation-of-state independent tests of general relativity and to break degeneracies in gravitational waveforms for hybrid stars in the third family as well.

Mass and radius constraints for compact stars and the QCD phase diagram

We suggest a new Bayesian analysis using disjunct M-R constraints for extracting probability measures for cold, dense matter equations of state. One of the key issues of such an analysis is the question of a deconfinement transition in compact stars and whether it proceeds as a crossover or rather as a first order transition. The latter question is relevant for the possible existence of a critical endpoint in the QCD phase diagram under scrutiny in present and upcoming heavy-ion collision experiments.

Conformal transformations and conformal invariance in gravitation

Conformal transformations are frequently used tools in order to study relations between various theories of gravity and the Einstein relativity. In this paper we discuss the rules of these transformations for geometric quantities as well as for the matter energy-momentum tensor. We show the subtlety of the matter energy-momentum conservation law which refers to the fact that the conformal transformation "creates" an extra matter term composed of the conformal factor which enters the conservation law. In an extreme case of the flat original spacetime the matter is "created" due to work done by the conformal transformation to bend the spacetime which was originally flat. We discuss how to construct the conformally invariant gravity theories and also find the conformal transformation rules for the curvature invariants $R^2$, $R_{ab}R^{ab}$, $R_{abcd}R^{abcd}$ and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant in a spacetime of an arbitrary dimension. Finally, we present the conformal transformation rules in the fashion of the duality transformations of the superstring theory. In such a case the transitions between conformal frames reduce to a simple change of the sign of a redefined conformal factor.

Observable effects caused by vacuum pair creation in the field of high-power optical lasers

We consider the possibility of an experimental proof of vacuum e+e- pair creation in the focus of two counter-propagating optical laser beams with an intensity of the order of 10^20 - 10^22 W/cm^2. Our approach is based on the collisionless kinetic equation for the distribution function of the e+e- pairs with the source term for particle production. As a possible experimental signal of vacuum pair production we consider the refraction of a high-frequency probe laser beam by the produced e+e- plasma to be observed by an interference filter. The generation of higher harmonics of the laser frequency in the self-consistent electric field is also investigated.

Neutrino emissivity and bulk viscosity of iso-CSL quark matter in neutron stars

We present results for neutrino emissivities and bulk viscosities of a two-flavor color superconducting quark matter phase with isotropic color-spin-locked (iso-CSL) single-flavor pairing which fulfill the constraints on quark matter derived from cooling and rotational evolution of compact stars. We compare with results for the phenomenologically successful, but yet heuristic 2SC+X phase.

Hadronic correlations above the chiral/deconfinement transition

The statistical bootstrap model is critically revised in order to include a medium-dependent resonance width in it. We show that a thermodynamic model with a vanishing width below the Hagedorn temperature T_H and a Hagedorn spectrum-like width above T_H may not only eliminate the divergence of the thermodynamic functions above T_H, but also gives a satisfactory description the lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) data on the energy density above the chiral/deconfinement transition as the main result of this contribution. This model allows to explain the absence of heavy resonance contributions in the fit of the experimentally measured particle ratios at SPS and RHIC energies.

Mott effect at the chiral phase transition and anomalous J/Psi suppression

We investigate the in-medium modification of the charmonium break-up processes due to the Mott effect for light (pi) and open-charm (D, D*) mesons at the chiral/deconfinement phase transition. A model calculation for the process J/Psi + pi -> D + \bar D* + h.c. is presented which demonstrates that the Mott effect for the D-mesons leads to a threshold effect in the thermal averaged break-up cross section. This effect is suggested as an explanation of the phenomenon of anomalous J/Psi suppression in the CERN NA50 experiment.
