Perturbative nuclear physics

We present a new formulation of effective field theory for nucleon-nucleon (NN) interactions which treats pion interactions perturbatively, and we offer evidence that the expansion converges satisfactorily to third order in the expansion, which we have computed analytically for s and d wave NN scattering. Starting with the Kaplan-Savage-Wise (KSW) expansion about the nontrivial fixed point corresponding to infinite NN scattering length, we cure the convergence problems with that theory by summing to all orders the singular short distance part of the pion tensor interaction. This method makes possible a host of high precision analytic few-body calculations in nuclear physics.

Inflationary Axion Cosmology Beyond Our Horizon

In theories of axion dark matter with large axion decay constant, temperature variations in the CMB are extremely sensitive to perturbations in the initial axion field, allowing one to place a lower bound on the total amount of inflation. The most stringent bound comes from axion strings, which for axion decay constant f=10^17 GeV would currently be observable at a distance of 6 x 10^16 light-years, nearly ten million times as far away as our horizon.

Exotic Axions

We show that axion phenomenology may be significantly different than conventionally assumed in theories which exhibit late phase transitions (below the QCD scale). In such theories one can find multiple pseudoscalars with axion-like couplings to matter, including a string scale axion, whose decay constant far exceeds the conventional cosmological bound. Such theories have several dark matter candidates.

A lattice theory for low energy fermions at finite chemical potential

We construct a lattice theory describing a system of interacting nonrelativistic spin s=1/2 fermions at nonzero chemical potential. The theory is applicable whenever the interparticle separation is large compared to the range of the two-body potential, and does not suffer from a sign problem. In particular, the theory could be useful in studying the thermodynamic limit of fermion systems for which the scattering length is much larger than the interparticle spacing, with applications to realistic atomic systems and dilute neutron gases.

New phases in CFL quark matter

We consider order $α_s$ corrections to the squared masses of the pseudo-Goldstone excitations about the ground state of dense quark matter. We show that these contributions tend to destabilize the vacuum, leading to a surprisingly complex phase structure for quark matter as a function of quark mass, even for small $α_s$. In particular we find two new phases of CFL quark matter possibly relevant for the real world, for which the QCD angle theta-bar equals pi/2.

Neutrino Oscillations as a Probe of Dark Energy

We consider a class of theories in which neutrino masses depend significantly on environment, as a result of interactions with the dark sector. Such theories of mass varying neutrinos (MaVaNs) were recently introduced to explain the origin of the cosmological dark energy density and why its magnitude is apparently coincidental with that of neutrino mass splittings. In this Letter we argue that in such theories neutrinos can exhibit different masses in matter and in vacuum, dramatically affecting neutrino oscillations. Both long and short baseline experiments are essential to test for these interactions. As an example of modifications to the standard picture, we consider simple models which may simultaneously account for the LSND anomaly, KamLAND, K2K and studies of solar and atmospheric neutrinos, while providing motivation to continue to search for neutrino oscillations in short baseline experiments such as BooNE.

Recent Developments in Lattice Supersymmetry

I discuss a new approach to constructing lattices for gauge theories with extended supersymmetry. The lattice theories themselves respect certain supersymmetries, which in many cases allows the target theory to be obtained in the continuum limit without fine-tuning.

Supersymmetry on a Spatial Lattice

We construct a variety of supersymmetric gauge theories on a spatial lattice, including N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in 3+1 dimensions. Exact lattice supersymmetry greatly reduces or eliminates the need for fine tuning to arrive at the desired continuum limit in these examples.

Supersymmetry on a Euclidean Spacetime Lattice I: A Target Theory with Four Supercharges

We formulate a Euclidean spacetime lattice whose continuum limit is (2,2) supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in two dimensions, a theory which possesses four supercharges and an anomalous global chiral symmetry. The lattice action respects one exact supersymmetry, which allows the target theory to emerge in the continuum limit without fine-tuning. Our method exploits an orbifold construction described previously for spatial lattices in Minkowski space, and can be generalized to more complicated theories with additional supersymmetry and more spacetime dimensions.

Charged and superconducting vortices in dense quark matter

Quark matter at astrophysical densities may contain stable vortices due to the spontaneous breaking of hypercharge symmetry by kaon condensation. We argue that these vortices could be both charged and electrically superconducting. Current carrying loops (vortons) could be long lived and play a role in the magnetic and transport properties of this matter. We provide a scenario for vorton formation in protoneutron stars.

Deconstructing (2,0) and Little String Theories

We argue that two four-dimensional strongly coupled superconformal field theories, on the Higgs branch in certain large N limits, become respectively (2,0) theory and (1,1) little string theory in six dimensions. We identify the spectrum of states responsible for the generation of the two extra dimensions and string winding modes. We establish the equivalence using orbifold realizations of the field theories and exploiting string dualities. We also speculate on deconstructions of M-theory.

Novel phases and transitions in Color Flavor Locked matter

We analyze the phases of dense quark matter at nonzero quark masses. We map out the phase diagrams for charged quark matter as well as charge neutral matter containing leptons. We find that in Color Flavor Locked (CFL) quark matter, the symmetric phase with equal numbers of $u$, $d$ and $s$ quarks is unlikely to occur in nature. Various less symmetric phases with additional meson condensates may play a role in neutron star cores, however, in agreement with the analysis of Bedaque and Schäfer. We discuss the implications of these novel color superconducting quark matter phases and their transitions for neutron stars.

Lattice supersymmetry

A method is proposed for latticizing a class of supersymmetric gauge theories, including N=4 super Yang-Mills. The technique is inspired by recent work on ``deconstruction''. Part of the target theory's supersymmetry is realized exactly on the lattice, reducing or eliminating the need for fine tuning.
