Classification of the automorphism and isometry groups of Higgs bundle moduli spaces

Let $\mathcal{M}_{n,d}$ be the moduli space of semi-stable rank $n$, trace-free Higgs bundles with fixed determinant of degree $d$ on a Riemann surface of genus at least $3$. We determine the following automorphism groups of $\mathcal{M}_{n,d}$: (i) the group of automorphisms as a complex analytic variety, (ii) the group of holomorphic symplectomorphisms, (iii) the group of Kähler isomorphisms, (iv) the group of automorphisms of the quaternionic structure, (v) the group of hyper-Kähler isomorphisms. When $n$ and $d$ are coprime we show that $\mathcal{M}_{n,d}$ admits an anti-holomorphic isomorphism if and only if the corresponding Riemann surface admits such a map. We then use this to determine the isometry group of $\mathcal{M}_{n,d}$.

Moduli Spaces of Contact Instantons

We construct the moduli space of contact instantons, an analogue of Yang-Mills instantons defined for contact metric $5$-manifolds and initiate the study of their structure. In the $K$-contact case we give sufficient conditions for smoothness of the moduli space away from reducible connections and show the dimension is given by the index of an operator elliptic transverse to the Reeb foliation. The moduli spaces are shown to be Kähler when the $5$-manifold $M$ is Sasakian and hyperKähler when $M$ is transverse Calabi-Yau. We show how the transverse index can be computed in various cases, in particular we compute the index for the toric Sasaki-Einstein spaces $Y^{p,q}$.

Transitive Courant Algebroids, String Structures and T-duality

In this paper, we use reduction by extended actions to give a construction of transitive Courant algebroids from string classes. We prove that T-duality commutes with the reductions and thereby determine global conditions for the existence of T-duals in heterotic string theory. In particular we find that T-duality exchanges string structures and gives an isomorphism of transitive Courant algebroids. Consequently we derive the T-duality transformation for generalised metrics and show that the heterotic Einstein equations are preserved. The presence of string structures significantly extends the domain of applicability of T-duality and this is illustrated by several classes of examples.

Real structures on moduli spaces of Higgs bundles

We construct triples of commuting real structures on the moduli space of Higgs bundles, whose fixed loci are branes of type (B, A, A), (A, B, A) and (A, A, B). We study the real points through the associated spectral data and describe the topological invariants involved using KO, KR and equivariant K-theory.

Higgs bundles and (A,B,A)-branes

Through the action of anti-holomorphic involutions on a compact Riemann surface, we construct families of (A,B,A)-branes in the moduli spaces of G_c-Higgs bundles on the Riemann surface. We study the geometry of these (A,B,A)-branes in terms of spectral data and show they have the structure of real integrable systems.

Variation of Hodge structure for generalized complex manifolds

A generalized complex manifold which satisfies the $\partial \overline{\partial}$-lemma admits a Hodge decomposition in twisted cohomology. Using a Courant algebroid theoretic approach we study the behavior of the Hodge decomposition in smooth and holomorphic families of generalized complex manifolds. In particular we define period maps, prove a Griffiths transversality theorem and show that for holomorphic families the period maps are holomorphic. Further results on the Hodge decomposition for various special cases including the generalized Kähler case are obtained.

Topological T-duality for torus bundles with monodromy

We give a simplified definition of topological T-duality that applies to arbitrary torus bundles. The new definition does not involve Chern classes or spectral sequences, only gerbes and morphisms between them. All the familiar topological conditions for T-duals are shown to follow. We determine necessary and sufficient conditions for existence of a T-dual in the case of affine torus bundles. This is general enough to include all principal torus bundles as well as torus bundles with arbitrary monodromy representations. We show that isomorphisms in twisted cohomology, twisted K-theory and of Courant algebroids persist in this general setting. We also give an example where twisted K-theory groups can be computed by iterating T-duality.

A Coboundary Morphism For The Grothendieck Spectral Sequence

Given an abelian category $\mathcal{A}$ with enough injectives we show that a short exact sequence of chain complexes of objects in $\mathcal{A}$ gives rise to a short exact sequence of Cartan-Eilenberg resolutions. Using this we construct coboundary morphisms between Grothendieck spectral sequences associated to objects in a short exact sequence. We show that the coboundary preserves the filtrations associated with the spectral sequences and give an application of these result to filtrations in sheaf cohomology.

Conformal Courant Algebroids and Orientifold T-duality

We introduce conformal Courant algebroids, a mild generalization of Courant algebroids in which only a conformal structure rather than a bilinear form is assumed. We introduce exact conformal Courant algebroids and show they are classified by pairs $(L,H)$ with $L$ a flat line bundle and $H \in H^3(M,L)$ a degree 3 class with coefficients in $L$. As a special case gerbes for the crossed module $({\rm U}(1) \to \mathbb{Z}_2)$ can be used to twist $TM \oplus T^*M$ into a conformal Courant algebroid. In the exact case there is a twisted cohomology which is 4-periodic if $L^2 = 1$. The structure of Conformal Courant algebroids on circle bundles leads us to construct a T-duality for orientifolds with free involution. This incarnation of T-duality yields an isomorphism of 4-periodic twisted cohomology. We conjecture that the isomorphism extends to an isomorphism in twisted $KR$-theory and give some calculations to support this claim.

Topological T-duality for general circle bundles

We extend topological T-duality to the case of general circle bundles. In this setting we prove existence and uniqueness of T-duals. We then show that T-dual spaces have isomorphic twisted cohomology, twisted $K$-theory and Courant algebroids. A novel feature is that we must consider two kinds of twists in de Rham cohomology and $K$-theory, namely by degree 3 integral classes and a less familiar kind of twist using real line bundles. We give some examples of T-dual non-oriented circle bundles and calculate their twisted $K$-theory.

Cyclic Higgs bundles and the affine Toda equations

We introduce a class of Higgs bundles called cyclic which lie in the Hitchin component of representations of a compact Riemann surface into the split real form of a simple Lie group. We then prove that such a Higgs bundle is equivalent to a certain class of solutions to the affine Toda equations. We further explain this relationships in terms of lifts of harmonic maps.

Leibniz algebroids, twistings and exceptional generalized geometry

We investigate a class of Leibniz algebroids which are invariant under diffeomorphisms and symmetries involving collections of closed forms. Under appropriate assumptions we arrive at a classification which in particular gives a construction starting from graded Lie algebras. In this case the Leibniz bracket is a derived bracket and there are higher derived brackets resulting in an $L_\infty$-structure. The algebroids can be twisted by a non-abelian cohomology class and we prove that the twisting class is described by a Maurer-Cartan equation. For compact manifolds we construct a Kuranishi moduli space of this equation which is shown to be affine algebraic. We explain how these results are related to exceptional generalized geometry.

G2 geometry and integrable systems

We study the Hitchin component in the space of representations of the fundamental group of a Riemann surface into a split real simple Lie group in the rank 2 case. We prove that such representations are described by a conformal structure and class of Higgs bundle we call cyclic and we show cyclic Higgs bundles correspond to a form of the affine Toda equations. In each case we relate cyclic Higgs bundles to geometric structures on the surface. We elucidate the geometry of generic 2-plane distributions in 5 dimensions, relating it to a parabolic geometry associated to the split real form of $G_2$ and a conformal geometry with holonomy in $G_2$. We prove the distribution is the bundle of maximal isotropics corresponding to the annihilator of a spinor satisfying the twistor-spinor equation. We study the moduli space of coassociative submanifolds of a $G_2$-manifold with an aim towards understanding coassociative fibrations. We consider coassociative fibrations where the fibres are orbits of a $T^4$-action of isomorphisms and prove a local equivalence to minimal 3-manifolds in $R^{3,3}\cong H^2(T^4,\mathbb{R})$ with positive induced metric.

Moduli of Coassociative Submanifolds and Semi-Flat Coassociative Fibrations

We study the natural structure on the moduli space of deformations of compact coassociative submanifolds. We show that a G2-manifold with a T^4-action of isomorphisms such that the orbits are coassociative tori is locally equivalent to a minimal 3-manifold in R^{3,3} = H^2(T^4,R) with positive induced metric. By studying minimal surfaces in quadrics we show how to construct minimal 3-manifold cones in R^{3,3} and hence G2-metrics from equations similar to a set of affine Toda equations. The relation to semi-flat special Lagrangian fibrations and the Monge-Ampère equation are explained.
