The Björling problem for non-minimal constant mean curvature surfaces

The classical Björling problem is to find the minimal surface containing a given real analytic curve with tangent planes prescribed along the curve. We consider the generalization of this problem to non-minimal constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces, and show that it can be solved via the loop group formulation for such surfaces. The main result gives a way to compute the holomorphic potential for the solution directly from the Björling data, using only elementary differentiation, integration and holomorphic extensions of real analytic functions. Combined with an Iwasawa decomposition of the loop group, this gives the solution, in analogue to Schwarz's formula for the minimal case. Some preliminary examples of applications to the construction of CMC surfaces with special properties are given.

Holomorphic Representation of Constant Mean Curvature Surfaces in Minkowski Space: Consequences of Non-Compactness in Loop Group Methods

We give an infinite dimensional generalized Weierstrass representation for spacelike constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces in Minkowski 3-space $\real^{2,1}$. The formulation is analogous to that given by Dorfmeister, Pedit and Wu for CMC surfaces in Euclidean space, replacing the group $SU_2$ with $SU_{1,1}$. The non-compactness of the latter group, however, means that the Iwasawa decomposition of the loop group, used to construct the surfaces, is not global. We prove that it is defined on an open dense subset, after doubling the size of the real form $SU_{1,1}$, and prove several results concerning the behavior of the surface as the boundary of this open set is encountered. We then use the generalized Weierstrass representation to create and classify new examples of spacelike CMC surfaces in $\real^{2,1}$. In particular, we classify surfaces of revolution and surfaces with screw motion symmetry, as well as studying another class of surfaces for which the metric is rotationally invariant.

Loop Group Decompositions in Almost Split Real Forms and Applications to Soliton Theory and Geometry

We prove a global Birkhoff decomposition for almost split real forms of loop groups, when an underlying finite dimensional Lie group is compact. Among applications, this shows that the dressing action - by the whole subgroup of loops which extend holomorphically to the exterior disc - on the $U$-hierarchy of the ZS-AKNS systems, on curved flats and on various other integrable systems, is global for compact cases. It also implies a global infinite dimensional Weierstrass-type representation for Lorentzian harmonic maps (1+1 wave maps) from surfaces into compact symmetric spaces. An "Iwasawa-type" decomposition of the same type of real form, with respect to a fixed point subgroup of an involution of the second kind, is also proved, and an application given.

Generalized DPW method and an application to isometric immersions of space forms

Let $G$ be a complex Lie group and $ΛG$ denote the group of maps from the unit circle ${\mathbb S}^1$ into $G$, of a suitable class. A differentiable map $F$ from a manifold $M$ into $ΛG$, is said to be of \emph{connection order $(_a^b)$} if the Fourier expansion in the loop parameter $λ$ of the ${\mathbb S}^1$-family of Maurer-Cartan forms for $F$, namely $F_λ^{-1} \dd F_λ$, is of the form $\sum_{i=a}^b α_i λ^i$. Most integrable systems in geometry are associated to such a map. Roughly speaking, the DPW method used a Birkhoff type splitting to reduce a harmonic map into a symmetric space, which can be represented by a certain order $(_{-1}^1)$ map, into a pair of simpler maps of order $(_{-1}^{-1})$ and $(_1^1)$ respectively. Conversely, one could construct such a harmonic map from any pair of $(_{-1}^{-1})$ and $(_1^1)$ maps. This allowed a Weierstrass type description of harmonic maps into symmetric spaces. We extend this method to show that, for a large class of loop groups, a connection order $(_a^b)$ map, for $a<0<b$, splits uniquely into a pair of $(_a^{-1})$ and $(_1^b)$ maps. As an application, we show that constant non-zero curvature submanifolds with flat normal bundle of a sphere or hyperbolic space split into pairs of flat submanifolds, reducing the problem (at least locally) to the flat case. To extend the DPW method sufficiently to handle this problem requires a more general Iwasawa type splitting of the loop group, which we prove always holds at least locally.

Grassmann Geometries and Integrable Systems

We describe how the loop group maps corresponding to special submanifolds associated to integrable systems may be thought of as certain Grassmann submanifolds of infinite dimensional homogeneous spaces. In general, the associated families of special submanifolds are certain Grassmann submanifolds. An example is given from recent work of the author.

$k$-symmetric AKS systems and flat immersions in spheres

We define a large class of integrable nonlinear PDE's, \emph{$k$-symmetric AKS systems}, whose solutions evolve on finite dimensional subalgebras of loop algebras, and linearize on an associated algebraic curve. We prove that periodicity of the associated algebraic data implies a type of quasiperiodicity for the solution, and show that the problem of isometrically immersing $n$-dimensional Euclidean space into a sphere of dimension $2n-1$ can be addressed via this scheme, producing infinitely many real analytic solutions.

Results related to generalizations of Hilbert's non-immersibility theorem for the hyperbolic plane

We discuss generalizations of the well-known theorem of Hilbert that there is no complete isometric immersion of the hyperbolic plane into Euclidean 3-space. We show that this problem is expressed very naturally as the question of the existence of certain homotheties of reflective submanifolds of a symmetric space. As such, we conclude that the only other (non-compact) cases to which this theorem could generalize are the problem of isometric immersions with flat normal bundle of the hyperbolic space $H^n$ into a Euclidean space $E^{n+k}$, $n \geq 2$, and the problem of Lagrangian isometric immersions of $H^n$ into $\cc^n$, $n \geq 2$. Moreover, there are natural compact counterparts to these problems, and for the compact cases we prove that the theorem does in fact generalize: local embeddings exist, but complete immersions do not.

Grassmann geometries in infinite dimensional homogeneous spaces and an application to reflective submanifolds

Let U be a real form of a complex semisimple Lie group, and tau, sigma, a pair of commuting involutions on U. This data corresponds to a reflective submanifold of a symmetric space, U/K. We define an associated integrable system, and describe how to produce solutions from curved flats. The solutions are shown to correspond to various special submanifolds, depending on which homogeneous space U/L one projects to. We apply the construction to a question which generalizes, to the context of reflective submanifolds of arbitrary symmetric spaces, the problem of isometric immersions of space forms with negative extrinsic curvature and flat normal bundle. For this problem, we prove that the only cases where local solutions exist are the previously known cases of space forms, in addition to constant curvature Lagrangian immersions into complex projective and complex hyperbolic spaces. We also prove non-existence of global solutions in the compact case. The solutions associated to other reflective submanifolds correspond to special deformations of lower dimensional submanifolds. As an example, we obtain a special class of surfaces in the 6-sphere.

Curved Flats, Pluriharmonic Maps and Constant Curvature Immersions into Pseudo-Riemannian Space Forms

We study two aspects of the loop group formulation for isometric immersions with flat normal bundle of space forms. The first aspect is to examine the loop group maps along different ranges of the loop parameter. This leads to various equivalences between global isometric immersion problems among different space forms and pseudo-Riemannian space forms. As a corollary, we obtain a non-immersibility theorem for spheres into certain pseudo-Riemannian spheres and hyperbolic spaces. The second aspect pursued is to clarify the relationship between the loop group formulation of isometric immersions of space forms and that of pluriharmonic maps into symmetric spaces. We show that the objects in the first class are, in the real analytic case, extended pluriharmonic maps into certain symmetric spaces which satisfy an extra reality condition along a totally real submanifold. We show how to construct such pluriharmonic maps for general symmetric spaces from curved flats, using a generalised DPW method.

A loop group formulation for constant curvature submanifolds of pseudo-Euclidean space

We give a loop group formulation for the problem of isometric immersions with flat normal bundle of a simply connected pseudo-Riemannian manifold $M_{c,r}^m$, of dimension $m$, constant sectional curvature $c \neq 0$, and signature $r$, into the pseudo-Euclidean space $\real_s^{m+k}$, of signature $s\geq r$. In fact these immersions are obtained canonically from the loop group maps corresponding to isometric immersions of the same manifold into a pseudo-Riemannian sphere or hyperbolic space $S_s^{m+k}$ or $H_s^{m+k}$, which have previously been studied. A simple formula is given for obtaining these immersions from those loop group maps.
