FM Synthesizer Audio-Parameter Shared Embeddings

Given a target sound, finding the synthesizer preset that best reproduces it remains a core problem in sound design. Existing methods treat synthesis parameters as flat vectors, discarding the signal routing and parameter interactions that produce audio. We make two contributions. First, to learn a representation of parameters including their signal routing, we design a graph neural network whose message passing structure imitates FM signal processing. Second, we adapt the multimodal objective from SLAP to learn joint embeddings of audio and FM synthesizer parameters, enabling preset retrieval from a gallery. We focus on the Yamaha DX7, where six identical sinusoid operators interact according to one of 32 routing topologies. Our graph encoder's message passing weights are shared across all nodes and layers, enabling processing of arbitrary topologies of any size. When every topology is seen during training, the DX7-GNN and two baselines achieve strong audio-to-preset retrieval. When some topologies are held out for testing, the DX7-GNN substantially outperforms both baselines despite having the fewest parameters. Our ablations further support the claim that imitating FM signal flow in a parameter encoder improves generalization to unseen topologies.

DAC-JAX: A JAX Implementation of the Descript Audio Codec

We present an open-source implementation of the Descript Audio Codec (DAC) using Google's JAX ecosystem of Flax, Optax, Orbax, AUX, and CLU. Our codebase enables the reuse of model weights from the original PyTorch DAC, and we confirm that the two implementations produce equivalent token sequences and decoded audio if given the same input. We provide a training and fine-tuning script which supports device parallelism, although we have only verified it using brief training runs with a small dataset. Even with limited GPU memory, the original DAC can compress or decompress a long audio file by processing it as a sequence of overlapping "chunks." We implement this feature in JAX and benchmark the performance on two types of GPUs. On a consumer-grade GPU, DAC-JAX outperforms the original DAC for compression and decompression at all chunk sizes. However, on a high-performance, cluster-based GPU, DAC-JAX outperforms the original DAC for small chunk sizes but performs worse for large chunks.

Assessing Human Judgment Forecasts in the Rapid Spread of the Mpox Outbreak: Insights and Challenges for Pandemic Preparedness

In May 2022, mpox (formerly monkeypox) spread to non-endemic countries rapidly. Human judgment is a forecasting approach that has been sparsely evaluated during the beginning of an outbreak. We collected -- between May 19, 2022 and July 31, 2022 -- 1275 forecasts from 442 individuals of six questions about the mpox outbreak where ground truth data are now available. Individual human judgment forecasts and an equally weighted ensemble were evaluated, as well as compared to a random walk, autoregressive, and doubling time model. We found (1) individual human judgment forecasts underestimated outbreak size, (2) the ensemble forecast median moved closer to the ground truth over time but uncertainty around the median did not appreciably decrease, and (3) compared to computational models, for 2-8 week ahead forecasts, the human judgment ensemble outperformed all three models when using median absolute error and weighted interval score; for one week ahead forecasts a random walk outperformed human judgment. We propose two possible explanations: at the time a forecast was submitted, the mode was correlated with the most recent (and smaller) observation that would eventually determine ground truth. Several forecasts were solicited on a logarithmic scale which may have caused humans to generate forecasts with unintended, large uncertainty intervals. To aide in outbreak preparedness, platforms that solicit human judgment forecasts may wish to assess whether specifying a forecast on logarithmic scale matches an individual's intended forecast, support human judgment by finding cues that are typically used to build forecasts, and, to improve performance, tailor their platform to allow forecasters to assign zero probability to events.

Chimeric forecasting: combining probabilistic predictions from computational models and human judgment

Forecasts of the trajectory of an infectious agent can help guide public health decision making. A traditional approach to forecasting fits a computational model to structured data and generates a predictive distribution. However, human judgment has access to the same data as computational models plus experience, intuition, and subjective data. We propose a chimeric ensemble -- a combination of computational and human judgment forecasts -- as a novel approach to predicting the trajectory of an infectious agent. Each month from January, 2021 to June, 2021 we asked two generalist crowds, using the same criteria as the COVID-19 Forecast Hub, to submit a predictive distribution over incident cases and deaths at the US national level either two or three weeks into the future and combined these human judgment forecasts with forecasts from computational models submitted to the COVID-19 Forecasthub into a chimeric ensemble. We find a chimeric ensemble compared to an ensemble including only computational models improves predictions of incident cases and shows similar performance for predictions of incident deaths. A chimeric ensemble is a flexible, supportive public health tool and shows promising results for predictions of the spread of an infectious agent.

Mechanization of Incidence Projective Geometry in Higher Dimensions, a Combinatorial Approach

Several tools have been developed to enhance automation of theorem proving in the 2D plane. However, in 3D, only a few approaches have been studied, and to our knowledge, nothing has been done in higher dimensions. In this paper, we present a few examples of incidence geometry theorems in dimensions 3, 4, and 5. We then prove them with the help of a combinatorial prover based on matroid theory applied to geometry.

DawDreamer: Bridging the Gap Between Digital Audio Workstations and Python Interfaces

Audio production techniques which previously only existed in GUI-constrained digital audio workstations, livecoding environments, or C++ APIs are now accessible with our new Python module called DawDreamer. DawDreamer therefore bridges the gap between real sound engineers and coders imitating them with offline batch-processing. Like contemporary modules in this domain, DawDreamer can create directed acyclic graphs of audio processors such as VSTs which generate or manipulate audio streams. DawDreamer can also dynamically compile and execute code from Faust, a powerful signal processing language which can be deployed to many platforms and microcontrollers. We discuss DawDreamer's unique features in detail and potential applications across music information retrieval including source separation, transcription, and audio effect parameter inference. We provide fully cross-platform PyPI installers, a Linux Dockerfile, and an example Jupyter notebook.

Developing Engineering Model Cobra fiber positioners for the Subaru Telescope Prime Focus Spectrometer

The Cobra fiber positioner is being developed by the California Institute of Technology (CIT) and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for the Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) instrument that will be installed at the Subaru Telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. PFS is a fiber fed multi-object spectrometer that uses an array of Cobra fiber positioners to rapidly reconfigure 2394 optical fibers at the prime focus of the Subaru Telescope that are capable of positioning a fiber to within 5um of a specified target location. A single Cobra fiber positioner measures 7.7mm in diameter and is 115mm tall. The Cobra fiber positioner uses two piezo-electric rotary motors to move a fiber optic anywhere in a 9.5mm diameter patrol area. In preparation for full-scale production of 2550 Cobra positioners an Engineering Model (EM) version was developed, built and tested to validate the design, reduce manufacturing costs, and improve system reliability. The EM leveraged the previously developed prototype versions of the Cobra fiber positioner. The requirements, design, assembly techniques, development testing, design qualification and performance evaluation of EM Cobra fiber positioners are described here. Also discussed is the use of the EM build and test campaign to validate the plans for full-scale production of 2550 Cobra fiber positioners scheduled to begin in late-2014.

Fiber Optical Cable and Connector System (FOCCoS) for PFS/Subaru

FOCCoS, Fiber Optical Cable and Connector System, has the main function of capturing the direct light from the focal plane of Subaru Telescope using optical fibers, each one with a microlens in its tip, and conducting this light through a route containing connectors to a set of four spectrographs. The optical fiber cable is divided in 3 different segments called Cable A, Cable B and Cable C. Multi-fibers connectors assure precise connection among all optical fibers of the segments, providing flexibility for instrument changes. To assure strong and accurate connection, these sets are arranged inside two types of assemblies: the Tower Connector, for connection between Cable C and Cable B; and the Gang Connector, for connection between Cable B and Cable A. Throughput tests were made to evaluate the efficiency of the connections. A lifetime test connection is in progress. Cable C is installed inside the PFI, Prime Focus Instrument, where each fiber tip with a microlens is bonded to the end of the shaft of a 2-stage piezo-electric rotatory motor positioner; this assembly allows each fiber to be placed anywhere within its patrol region, which is 9.5mm diameter.. Each positioner uses a fiber arm to support the ferrule, the microlens, and the optical fiber. 2400 of these assemblies are arranged on a motor bench plate in a hexagonal-closed-packed disposition.
