Green's Function for a Hierarchical Self-Avoiding Walk in Four Dimensions

This is the second of two papers on the end-to-end distance of a weakly self-repelling walk on a four dimensional hierarchical lattice. It completes the proof that the expected value grows as a constant times \sqrt{T} log^{1/8}T (1+O((log log T)/log T)), which is the same law as has been conjectured for self-avoiding walks on the simple cubic lattice Z^4. - Apart from completing the program in the first paper, the main result is that the Green's function is almost equal to the Green's function for the Markov process with no self-repulsion, but at a different value of the killing rate βwhich can be accurately calculated when the interaction is small. Furthermore, the Green's function is analytic in βin a sector in the complex plane with opening angle greater than π.

Branched Polymers and Dimensional Reduction

We establish an exact relation between self-avoiding branched polymers in D+2 continuum dimensions and the hard-core continuum gas at negative activity in D dimensions. We review conjectures and results on critical exponents for D+2 = 2,3,4 and show that they are corollaries of our result. We explain the connection (first proposed by Parisi and Sourlas) between branched polymers in D+2 dimensions and the Yang-Lee edge singularity in D dimensions.

Coulomb systems at low density

Results on the correlations of low density classical and quantum Coulomb systems at equilibrium in three dimensions are reviewed. The exponential decay of particle correlations in the classical Coulomb system -- Debye-Hückel screening -- is compared and contrasted with the quantum case where strong arguments are presented for the absence of exponential screening. Results and techniques for detailed calculations that determine the asymptotic decay of correlations for quantum systems are discussed. Theorems on the existence of molecules in the Saha regime are reviewed. Finally, new combinatoric formulas for the coefficients of Mayer expansions are presented and their role in proofs of results on Debye-Hückel screening is discussed.
