Thermodynamic Properties of the van der Waals Fluid

The van der Waals (vdW) theory of fluids is the first and simplest theory that takes into account interactions between the particles of a system that result in a phase transition versus temperature. Combined with Maxwell's construction, this mean-field theory predicts the conditions for equilibrium coexistence between the gas and liquid phases and the first-order transition between them. However, important properties of the vdW fluid have not been systematically investigated. Here we report a comprehensive study of these properties. Ambiguities about the physical interpretation of the Boyle temperature and the influence of the vdW molecular interactions on the pressure of the vdW gas are resolved. Thermodynamic variables and properties are formulated in reduced units that allow all properties to be expressed as laws of corresponding states that apply to all vdW fluids. Lekner's parametric solution for the vdW gas-liquid coexistence curve in the pressure-temperature plane and related thermodynamic properties [Am. J. Phys. 50, 161 (1982)] is explained and significantly extended. Hysteresis in the first-order transition temperature on heating and cooling is examined and the maximum degrees of superheating and supercooling determined. The latent heat of vaporization and the entropy change on crossing the coexistence curve are investigated. The temperature dependences of the isothermal compressibility, thermal expansion coefficient and heat capacity at constant pressure for a range of pressures above, at and below the critical pressure are systematically studied from numerical calculations including their critical behaviors and their discontinuities on crossing the coexistence curve. Joule-Thomson expansion of the vdW gas is investigated in detail and the pressure and temperature conditions for liquifying a vdW gas on passing through the throttle are determined.

Superconductivity above 10 K in Non-Cuprate Oxides

Beginning in 1973, several non-cuprate transition metal and non-transition metal oxides were discovered with superconducting transition temperatures between 10 and 30 K. Retrospectives about these discoveries in spinel structure LiTi2O4 and perovskite structure (Ba,K)(Bi,Pb)O3 are given.

The Puzzle of High Temperature Superconductivity in Layered Iron Pnictides and Chalcogenides

The response of the worldwide scientific community to the discovery in 2008 of superconductivity at Tc = 26 K in the Fe-based compound LaFeAsO_{1-x}F_x has been very enthusiastic. In short order, other Fe-based superconductors with the same or related crystal structures were discovered with Tc up to 56 K. Many experiments were carried out and theories formulated to try to understand the basic properties of these new materials and the mechanism for Tc. In this selective critical review of the experimental literature, we distill some of this extensive body of work, and discuss relationships between different types of experiments on these materials with reference to theoretical concepts and models. The experimental normal-state properties are emphasized, and within these the electronic and magnetic properties because of the likelihood of an electronic/magnetic mechanism for superconductivity in these materials.

Magnetic Structure and Interactions in the Quasi-1D Antiferromagnet CaV$_2$O$_4$

CaV$_2$O$_4$ is a spin-1 antiferromagnet, where the magnetic vanadium ions are arranged on quasi-one-dimensional (1D) zig-zag chains with potentially frustrated antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. High temperature susceptibility and single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements are used to deduce the non-collinear magnetic structure, dominant exchange interactions and orbital configurations. The results suggest that at high temperatures CaV$_2$O$_4$ behaves as a Haldane chain, but at low temperatures, orbital ordering lifts the frustration and it becomes a spin-1 ladder.

Decomposition of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain compound Sr2CuO3 in air and water: An EPR and magnetic susceptibility study of Sr2Cu(OH)6

The reaction of Sr2CuO3 with air and liquid water was studied to address the origin of the reported variable Curie-Weiss impurity contribution to the magnetic susceptibility X of this compound at low temperatures. Sr2CuO3 was found to decompose upon exposure to either of these environments. The compound Sr2Cu(OH)6 was identified as the primary reaction product. A pure sample of Sr2Cu(OH)6 was then prepared separately. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), isothermal magnetization versus magnetic field M(H) and X versus temperature T measurements demonstrate that Sr2Cu(OH)6 contains weakly interacting Cu+2 magnetic moments with spin S = 1/2 and average g-factor 2.133. From a fit of X(T) by the Curie-Weiss law and of the M(H) isotherms by modified Brillouin functions, the exchange interaction between adjacent Cu+2 spins was found to be J/kB = -1.06(4)K, a weakly antiferromagnetic interaction. Our results indicate that the previously reported, strongly sample-dependent, Curie-Weiss contribution to X(T) of a polycrystalline Sr2CuO3 sample most likely arises from exposing the sample to air, resulting in a variable amount of paramagnetic Sr2Cu(OH)6 on the surface of the sample.

Quantum Monte Carlo Simulation of the Trellis Lattice Heisenberg Model for SrCu$_2$O$_3$ and CaV$_2$O$_5$

We study the spin-1/2 trellis lattice Heisenberg model, a coupled spin ladder system, both by perturbation around the dimer limit and by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We discuss the influence of the inter-ladder coupling on the spin gap and the dispersion, and present results for the temperature dependence of the uniform susceptibility. The latter was found to be parameterized well by a mean-field type scaling ansatz. Finally we discuss fits of experimental measurements on SrCu$_2$O$_3$ and CaV$_2$O$_5$ to our results.
