Uniform dynamical bounds for the Fibonacci Hamiltonian

We prove quantum dynamical upper bounds for operators from the Fibonacci hull. These bounds hold for sufficiently large coupling and they are uniform in the phase. This extends recent work by Killip, Kiselev and Last who obtained these bounds for one particular phase. The main ingredient in our proof is a detailed combinatorial analysis of the sequences in the Fibonacci hull.

Palindrome complexity

We study the palindrome complexity of infinite sequences on finite alphabets, i.e., the number of palindromic factors (blocks) of given length occurring in a given sequence. We survey the known results and obtain new results for some sequences, in particular for Rote sequences and for fixed points of primitive morphisms of constant length belonging to the class P substitutions of Hof-Knill-Simon. We also give an upper bound for the palindrome complexity of a sequence in terms of its (block-)complexity.

Uniform spectral properties of one-dimensional quasicrystals, IV. Quasi-Sturmian potentials

We consider discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with quasi-Sturmian potentials. We present a new approach to the trace map dynamical system which is independent of the initial conditions and establish a characterization of the spectrum in terms of bounded trace map orbits. Using this, it is shown that the operators have purely singular continuous spectrum and their spectrum is a Cantor set of Lebesgue measure zero. We also exhibit a subclass having purely $α$-continuous spectrum. All these results hold uniformly on the hull generated by a given potential.

Lyapunov exponents in continuum Bernoulli-Anderson models

We study one-dimensional, continuum Bernoulli-Anderson models with general single-site potentials and prove positivity of the Lyapunov exponent away from a discrete set of critical energies. The proof is based on Fürstenberg's Theorem. The set of critical energies is described explicitly in terms of the transmission and reflection coefficients for scattering at the single-site potential. In examples we discuss the asymptotic behavior of generalized eigenfunctions at critical energies.

Localization for One Dimensional, Continuum, Bernoulli-Anderson Models

We use scattering theoretic methods to prove strong dynamical and exponential localization for one dimensional, continuum, Anderson-type models with singular distributions; in particular the case of a Bernoulli distribution is covered. The operators we consider model alloys composed of at least two distinct types of randomly dispersed atoms. Our main tools are the reflection and transmission coefficients for compactly supported single site perturbations of a periodic background which we use to verify the necessary hypotheses of multi-scale analysis. We show that non-reflectionless single sites lead to a discrete set of exceptional energies away from which localization occurs.

Reflection symmetries of almost periodic functions

We study global reflection symmetries of almost periodic functions. In the non-limit periodic case, we establish an upper bound on the Haar measure of the set of those elements in the hull which are almost symmetric about the origin. As an application of this result we prove that in the non-limit periodic case, the criterion of Jitomirskaya and Simon ensuring absence of eigenvalues for almost periodic Schrödinger operators is only applicable on a set of zero Haar measure. We complement this by giving examples of limit periodic functions where the Jitomirskaya-Simon criterion can be applied to every element of the hull.

A generalization of Gordon's theorem and applications to quasiperiodic Schrödinger operators

We prove a criterion for absence of eigenvalues for one-dimensional Schrödinger operators. This criterion can be regarded as an $L^1$-version of Gordon's theorem and it has a broader range of application. Absence of eigenvalues is then established for quasiperiodic potentials generated by Liouville frequencies and various types of functions such as step functions, Hölder continuous functions and functions with power-type singularities. The proof is based on Gronwall-type a priori estimates for solutions of Schrödinger equations.

Linear repetitivity, I. Uniform subadditive ergodic theorems and applications

This paper is concerned with the concept of linear repetitivity in the theory of tilings. We prove a general uniform subadditive ergodic theorem for linearly repetitive tilings. This theorem unifies and extends various known (sub)additive ergodic theorems on tilings. The results of this paper can be applied in the study of both random operators and lattice gas models on tilings.

Half-line eigenfunction estimates and singular continuous spectrum of zero Lebesgue measure

We consider discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with strictly ergodic, aperiodic potentials taking finitely many values. The well-known tendency of these operators to have purely singular continuous spectrum of zero Lebesgue measure is further elucidated. We provide a unified approach to both the study of the spectral type as well as the measure of the spectrum as a set. We apply this approach to Schrödinger operators with Sturmian potentials. Finally, in the appendix, we discuss the two different strictly ergodic dynamical systems associated to a circle map.

Uniform spectral properties of one-dimensional quasicrystals, III. $α$-continuity

We study the spectral properties of discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with Sturmian potentials. It is shown that the point spectrum is always empty. Moreover, for rotation numbers with bounded density, we establish purely $α$-continuous spectrum, uniformly for all phases. The proofs rely on the unique decomposition property of Sturmian potentials, a mass-reproduction technique based upon a Gordon-type argument, and on the Jitomirskaya-Last extension of the Gilbert-Pearson theory of subordinacy.

Uniform spectral properties of one-dimensional quasicrystals, II. The Lyapunov exponent

In this paper we introduce a method that allows one to prove uniform local results for one-dimensional discrete Schrödinger operators with Sturmian potentials. We apply this method to the transfer matrices in order to study the Lyapunov exponent and the growth rate of eigenfunctions. This gives uniform vanishing of the Lyapunov exponent on the spectrum for all irrational rotation numbers. For irrational rotation numbers with bounded continued fraction expansion, it gives uniform existence of the Lyapunov exponent on the whole complex plane. Moreover, it yields uniform polynomial upper bounds on the growth rate of transfer matrices for irrational rotation numbers with bounded density. In particular, all our results apply to the Fibonacci case.
