Inflation and Supersymmetry Breaking

We study the connection between inflation and supersymmetry breaking in the context of an O'Raifeartaigh model which can account for both hybrid inflation and a true vacuum where supersymmetry is spontaneously broken. For a weakly coupled inflaton field, the dynamics during the inflationary phase can be determined by the supersymmetry breaking scale $M_S\sim 10^{10}$ GeV, even if $H_I >> m_{3/2}$. The spectrum of density fluctuations is then almost scale invariant, with a spectral index $n-1={\cal O}(M_G^2/M_P^2)$. The mass parameter $M_G$ of the O'Raifeartaigh model is determined by the COBE normalization for the cosmic microwave background to be the grand unification scale, $M_G \sim 10^{16}$ GeV.

Neutrino Mixing and Flavour Changing Processes

We study the implications of a large nu_mu - nu_tau mixing angle on flavour changing transitions of quarks and leptons in supersymmetric extensions of the standard model. Two patterns of supersymmetry breaking are considered, models with modular invariance and the standard scenario of universal soft breaking terms at the GUT scale. The analysis is performed for two symmetry groups G x U(1)_F, with G=SU(5) and G=SU(3)^3, where U(1)_F is a family symmetry. Models with modular invariance are in agreement with observations only for restricted scalar quark and gaugino masses, (M_squark^2)/(m_gluino^2) \simeq 7/9 and m_bino > 350 GeV. A characteristic feature of models with large tan beta and radiatively induced flavour mixing is a large branching ratio for mu -> e gamma. For both symmetry groups and for the considered range of supersymmetry breaking mass parameters we find BR(mu -> e gamma) > 10^(-14).

Gravitino constraints on models of neutrino masses and leptogenesis

In the supersymmetric extensions of the standard model, neutrino masses and leptogenesis requires existence of new particles. We point out that if these particles with lepton number violating interactions have standard model gauge interactions, then they may not be created after reheating because of the gravitino problem. This will rule out all existing models of neutrino masses and leptogenesis, except the one with right-handed singlet neutrinos.
