Isotropization of Slowly Expanding Spacetimes

We show that the homogeneous, massless Einstein-Vlasov system with toroidal spatial topology and diagonal Bianchi type I symmetry for initial data close to isotropic data isotropizes towards the future and in particular asymptotes to a radiative Einstein-deSitter model. We use an energy method to obtain quantitative estimates on the rate of isotropization in this class of models.

Stable cosmological Kaluza-Klein Spacetimes

We consider the Einstein flow on a product manifold with one factor being a compact quotient of 3-dimensional hyperbolic space without boundary and the other factor being a flat torus of fixed arbitrary dimension. We consider initial data symmetric with respect to the toroidal directions. We obtain effective Einsteinian field equations coupled to a wave map type and a Maxwell type equation by the Kaluza-Klein reduction. The Milne universe solves those field equations when the additional parts arising from the toroidal dimensions are chosen constant. We prove future stability of the Milne universe within this class of spacetimes, which establishes stability of a large class of cosmological Kaluza-Klein vacua. A crucial part of the proof is the implementation of a new gauge for Maxwell-type equations in the cosmological context, which we refer to as slice-adapted gauge.

Kantowski-Sachs cosmology with Vlasov matter

We analyse the Kantowski-Sachs cosmologies with Vlasov matter of massive and massless particles using dynamical systems analysis. We show that generic solutions are past and future asymptotic to the non-flat locally rotationally symmetric Kasner vacuum solution. Furthermore, we establish that solutions with massive Vlasov matter behave like solutions with massless Vlasov matter towards the singularities.

Attractors of the Einstein-Klein Gordon system

It is shown that negative Einstein metrics are attractors of the Einstein-Klein-Gordon system. As an essential part of the proof we upgrade a technique that uses the continuity equation complementary to $L^2$-estimates to control massive matter fields. In contrast to earlier applications of this idea we require a correction to the energy density to obtain sufficiently good pointwise bounds.

On the CMC-Einstein-Lambda flow

We complement a recent work on the stability of fixed points of the CMC-Einstein-$Λ$ flow. In particular, we modify the utilized gauge for the Einstein equations and remove a restriction on the fixed points whose stability we are able to prove by this method, and thereby generalize the stability result. In addition, we consider the notion of the reduced Hamiltonian, originally introduced by Fischer and Moncrief for the standard CMC-Einstein flow. For the analog version of the flow in the presence of a positive cosmological constant we identify the stationary points and relate them to the long-time behavior of the flow on manifolds of different Yamabe types. This entails conjectures on the asymptotic behaviour and potential attractors.

Stable fixed points of the Einstein flow with positive cosmological constant

We prove nonlinear stability for a large class of solutions to the Einstein equations with a positive cosmological constant and compact spatial topology in arbitrary dimensions, where the spatial metric is Einstein with either positive or negative Einstein constant. The proof uses the CMC Einstein flow and stability follows by an energy argument. We prove in addition that the development of non-CMC initial data close to the background contains a CMC hypersurface, which in turn implies that stability holds for arbitrary perturbations. Furthermore, we construct a one-parameter family of initial data such that above a critical parameter value the corresponding development is future and past incomplete.

Nonlinear stability of the Milne model with matter

We show that any 3+1-dimensional Milne model is future nonlinearly, asymptotically stable in the set of solutions to the Einstein-Vlasov system. For the analysis of the Einstein equations we use the constant-mean-curvature-spatial-harmonic gauge. For the distribution function the proof makes use of geometric L^2-estimates based on the Sasaki-metric. The resulting estimates on the energy momentum tensor are then upgraded by employing the natural continuity equation for the energy density.

The Stability of the Minkowski space for the Einstein-Vlasov system

We prove the global stability of the Minkowski space viewed as the trivial solution of the Einstein-Vlasov system. To estimate the Vlasov field, we use the vector field and modified vector field techniques developed in [FJS15; FJS17]. In particular, the initial support in the velocity variable does not need to be compact. To control the effect of the large velocities, we identify and exploit several structural properties of the Vlasov equation to prove that the worst non-linear terms in the Vlasov equation either enjoy a form of the null condition or can be controlled using the wave coordinate gauge. The basic propagation estimates for the Vlasov field are then obtained using only weak interior decay for the metric components. Since some of the error terms are not time-integrable, several hierarchies in the commuted equations are exploited to close the top order estimates. For the Einstein equations, we use wave coordinates and the main new difficulty arises from the commutation of the energy-momentum tensor, which needs to be rewritten using the modified vector fields.

Sharp asymptotics for small data solutions of the Vlasov-Nordström system in three dimensions

This paper proves almost-sharp asymptotics for small data solutions of the Vlasov-Nordström system in dimension three. This system consists of a wave equation coupled to a transport equation and describes an ensemble of relativistic, self-gravitating particles. We derive sharp decay estimates using a variant of the vector-field method introduced in previous work. More precisely, we construct modified vector fields, depending on the solutions, to propagate $L^1$-bounds for the distribution function and its derivatives. The modified vector fields are designed to have improved commutation properties with the transport operator and yet to still provide sufficient control on the solutions to allow for a sharp Klainerman-Sobolev type inequality. Our method does not require any compact support assumption in the velocity variable nor do we need strong interior decay for the solution to the wave equation.

The Einstein-Lambda flow on product manifolds

We consider the vacuum Einstein flow with a positive cosmological constant on spatial manifolds of product form. In spatial dimension at least four we show the existence of continuous families of recollapsing models whenever at least one of the factors or admits a Riemannian Einstein metric with positive Einstein constant. We moreover show that these families belong to larger continuous families with models that have two complete time directions, i.e. do not recollapse. Complementarily, we show that whenever no factor has positive curvature, then any model in the product class expands in one time direction and collapses in the other. In particular, positive curvature of one factor is a necessary criterion for recollapse within this class. Finally, we relate our results to the instability of the Nariai solution in three spatial dimensions and point out why a similar construction of recollapsing models in that dimension fails. The present results imply that there exist different classes of initial data which exhibit fundamentally different types of long-time behavior under the Einstein flow whenever the spatial dimension is strictly larger than three. Moreover, this behavior is related to the spatial topology through the existence of Riemannian Einstein metrics of positive curvature.

Courant-sharp eigenvalues of Neumann 2-rep-tiles

We find the Courant-sharp Neumann eigenvalues of the Laplacian on some 2-rep-tile domains. In $\R^{2}$ the domains we consider are the isosceles right triangle and the rectangle with edge ratio $\sqrt{2}$ (also known as the A4 paper). In $\R^{n}$ the domains are boxes which generalize the mentioned planar rectangle. The symmetries of those domains reveal a special structure of their eigenfunctions, which we call folding\textbackslash{}unfolding. This structure affects the nodal set of the eigenfunctions, which in turn allows to derive necessary conditions for Courant-sharpness. In addition, the eigenvalues of these domains are arranged as a lattice which allows for a comparison between the nodal count and the spectral position. The Courant-sharpness of most eigenvalues is ruled out using those methods. In addition, this analysis allows to estimate the nodal deficiency - the difference between the spectral position and the nodal count.

Models for Self-Gravitating Photon Shells and Geons

We prove existence of spherically symmetric, static, self-gravitating photon shells as solutions to the massless Einstein-Vlasov system. The solutions are highly relativistic in the sense that the ratio $2m(r)/r$ is close to $8/9$, where $m(r)$ is the Hawking mass and $r$ is the area radius. In 1955 Wheeler constructed, by numerical means, so called idealized spherically symmetric geons, i.e. solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations for which the energy momentum tensor is spherically symmetric on a time average. The structure of these solutions is such that the electromagnetic field is confined to a thin shell for which the ratio $2m/r$ is close to $8/9$, i.e., the solutions are highly relativistic photon shells. The solutions presented in this work provide an alternative model for photon shells or idealized spherically symmetric geons.

A vector field method for relativistic transport equations with applications

We adapt the vector field method of Klainerman to the study of relativistic transport equations. First, we prove robust decay estimates for velocity averages of solutions to the relativistic massive and massless transport equations, without any compact support requirements (in $x$ or $v$) for the distribution functions. In the second part of this article, we apply our method to the study of the massive and massless Vlasov-Nordström systems. In the massive case, we prove global existence and (almost) optimal decay estimates for solutions in dimensions $n \geq 4$ under some smallness assumptions. In the massless case, the system decouples and we prove optimal decay estimates for the solutions in dimensions $n \geq 4$ for arbitrarily large data, and in dimension $3$ under some smallness assumptions, exploiting a certain form of the null condition satisfied by the equations. The $3$-dimensional massive case requires an extension of our method and will be treated in future work.

Topological Properties of Neumann Domains

A Laplacian eigenfunction on a two-dimensional manifold dictates some natural partitions of the manifold; the most apparent one being the well studied nodal domain partition. An alternative partition is revealed by considering a set of distinguished gradient flow lines of the eigenfunction - those which are connected to saddle points. These give rise to Neumann domains. We establish complementary definitions for Neumann domains and Neumann lines and use basic Morse homology to prove their fundamental topological properties. We study the eigenfunction restrictions to these domains. Their zero set, critical points and spectral properties allow to discuss some aspects of counting the number of Neumann domains and estimating their geometry.

Area inequalities for stable marginally outer trapped surfaces in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory

We prove area inequalities for stable marginally outer trapped surfaces in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory. Our inspiration comes on the one hand from a corresponding upper bound for the area in terms of the charges obtained recently by Dain, Jaramillo and Reiris [1] in the pure Einstein-Maxwell case without symmetries, and on the other hand from Yazadjiev's inequality [2] in the axially symmetric Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton case. The common issue in these proofs and in the present one is a functional ${\mathscr W}$ of the matter fields for which the stability condition readily yields an {\it upper} bound. On the other hand, the step which crucially depends on whether or not a dilaton field is present is to obtain a {\it lower} bound for ${\mathscr W}$ as well. We obtain the latter by first setting up a variational principle for ${\mathscr W}$ with respect to the dilaton field $ϕ$, then by proving existence of a minimizer $ψ$ as solution of the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations and finally by estimating ${\mathscr W}(ψ)$. In the special case that the normal components of the electric and magnetic fields are proportional we obtain the area bound $A \ge 8πP Q$ in terms of the electric and magnetic charges. In the generic case our results are less explicit but imply rigorous `perturbation' results for the above inequality. All our inequalities are saturated for a 2-parameter family of static, extreme solutions found by Gibbons [3]. Via the Bekenstein-Hawking relation $A = 4S$ our results give positive lower bounds for the entropy $S$ which are particularly interesting in the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton case.

Static solutions to the Einstein-Vlasov system with non-vanishing cosmological constant

We construct spherically symmetric, static solutions to the Einstein-Vlasov system with non-vanishing cosmological constant $Λ$. The results are divided as follows. For small $Λ>0$ we show existence of globally regular solutions which coincide with the Schwarzschild-deSitter solution in the exterior of the matter sources. For $Λ<0$ we show via an energy estimate the existence of globally regular solutions which coincide with the Schwarzschild-Anti-deSitter solution in the exterior vacuum region. We also construct solutions with a Schwarzschild singularity at the center regardless of the sign of $Λ$. For all solutions considered, the energy density and the pressure components have bounded support. Finally, we point out a straightforward method to obtain a large class of globally non-vacuum spacetimes with topologies $\mathbb R\times S^3$ and $\mathbb R\times S^2\times \mathbb R$ which arise from our solutions using the periodicity of the Schwarzschild-deSitter solution. A subclass of these solutions contains black holes of different masses.

Nodal domains of a non-separable problem - the right angled isosceles triangle

We study the nodal set of eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator on the right angled isosceles triangle. A local analysis of the nodal pattern provides an algorithm for computing the number of nodal domains for any eigenfunction. In addition, an exact recursive formula for the number of nodal domains is found to reproduce all existing data. Eventually we use the recursion formula to analyse a large sequence of nodal counts statistically. Our analysis shows that the distribution of nodal counts for this triangular shape has a much richer structure than the known cases of regular separable shapes or completely irregular shapes. Furthermore we demonstrate that the nodal count sequence contains information about the periodic orbits of the corresponding classical ray dynamics.
