Non-reduced components of global nilpotent cones

We determine the non-reduced components of global nilpotent cones in various cases of interest. In particular, under the appropriate coprimality conditions, we show: (1) the global nilpotent cone for an $L$-twisted $\operatorname{GL}_r$-Hitchin fibration associated to a curve $C$ of genus $g\ge 2$ is nowhere reduced, where $L$ is either the canonical bundle or has degree greater than $2g-2$; (2) the global nilpotent cone for a moduli space of one-dimensional sheaves on a K3, abelian, or del Pezzo surface is nowhere reduced; (3) suppose $\ell$ is a primitive, basepoint-free, big and nef class on a K3 surface, then a general fiber of a Beauville-Mukai system for the class $r\ell$ has primitive homology class if and only if $r=1$. Our methods include group scheme actions on Lagrangian fibrations, a GIT-stratification of global nilpotent cones of Hitchin fibrations, and deformation to the normal cone.

On inertial forces (indirect terms) in problems with a central body

Gravitational systems in astrophysics often comprise a body -- the primary -- that far outweights the others, and which is taken as the centre of the reference frame. A fictitious acceleration, also known as the indirect term, must therefore be added to all other bodies in the system to compensate for the absence of motion of the primary. In this paper, we first stress that there is not one indirect term but as many indirect terms as there are bodies in the system that exert a gravitational pull on the primary. For instance, in the case of a protoplanetary disc with two planets, there are three indirect terms: one arising from the whole disc, and one per planet. We also highlight that the direct and indirect gravitational accelerations should be treated in a balanced way: the indirect term from one body should be applied to the other bodies in the system that feel its direct gravitational acceleration, and only to them. We point to situations where one of those terms is usually neglected however, which may lead to spurious results. These ideas are developed here for star-disc-planets interactions, for which we propose a recipe for the force to be applied onto a migrating planet, but they can easily be generalized to other astrophysical systems.

On Fourier-Mukai transforms of upward flows for Hitchin systems

We consider the moduli space of semistable Higgs bundles on a smooth projective curve. Motivated by mirror symmetry, Hausel and Hitchin showed that over an open of the locus of smooth Hitchin fibers, the duality of Donagi-Pantev intertwines certain Lagrangian upward flows with hyperholomorphic vector bundles constructed from universal Higgs bundles. Using Arinkin's sheaf and some codimension estimates, we show a generalization of this result over the entire Hitchin base, for Higgs bundles of arbitrary degree.

Filtering cohomology of ordinary and Lagrangian Grassmannians

This paper studies, for a positive integer $m$, the subalgebra of the cohomology ring of the complex Grassmannians generated by the elements of degree at most $m$. We build in two ways upon a conjecture for the Hilbert series of this subalgebra due to Reiner and Tudose. The first reinterprets it in terms of the operation of $k$-conjugation, suggesting two conjectural bases for the subalgebras that would imply their conjecture. The second introduces an analogous conjecture for the cohomology of Lagrangian Grassmannians.
