Self-similar solutions to the time-fractional Porous-Medium Equation

We show the existence of self-similar solutions with constant finite mass to the time-fractional Porous-Medium Equation for all spatial dimensions $d \ge 1$ and all exponents $m>m_c=(d-2)_+/d$. This range is optimal. We find two types of solution depending on the exponent: compactly supported solutions in the slow-diffusion range $m > 1$ and positive solutions with heavy tails in the sub-critical fast-diffusion range $m_c < m < 1$. The self-similar solutions in the linear case $m=1$ were already known explicitly obtained by the Fourier transform, and we discuss their properties in our settings and the limit $m \to 1$.

Fractional Derivatives: an extension of classical analysis to non-integer orders

This article provides an accessible introduction to fractional derivatives, a concept that extends classical calculus by allowing derivatives of non-integer order. It explores both the fundamental definitions and some of the most relevant properties and applications of this mathematical tool. It was originally published in Spanish in the Gaceta de la Real Sociedad Española and automatically translated using Github copilot.

Finite Elements with weighted bases for the fractional Laplacian

This work presents a numerical study of the Dirichlet problem for the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^s$ with $s\in(0,1)$ using Finite Element methods with non-standard bases. Classical approaches based on piece-wise linear basis yield $h^{\frac 1 2}$ convergence rates in the Sobolev-Slobodeckij norm $H^s$ due to the limited boundary regularity of the solution $u(x)$, which behaves like $\operatorname{dist}(x,\mathbb{R}^d\setminus Ω)^s$, where $h$ is the diameter of the mesh elements. To overcome this limitation, we propose a novel Finite Element basis of the form $δ^s \times ($piece-wise linear functions$)$, where $δ$ is any suitably smooth approximation of $\operatorname{dist}(x,\mathbb{R}^d\setminus Ω)$. This exploits the improved regularity of $u/δ^s$, achieving higher convergence rates. Under standard smoothness assumptions the method attains an order $h^{2-s}$ on quasi-uniform meshes, improving the rates with the piece-wise linear basis. We provide a rigorous theoretical error analysis with explicit rates and validate it through numerical experiments.

Drift-diffusion equations with saturation

We focus on a family of nonlinear continuity equations for the evolution of a non-negative density $ρ$ with a continuous and compactly supported nonlinear mobility $\mathrm{m}(ρ)$ not necessarily concave. The velocity field is the negative gradient of the variation of a free energy including internal and confinement energy terms. Problems with compactly supported mobility are often called saturation problems since the values of the density are constrained below a maximal value. Taking advantage of a family of approximating problems, we show the existence of $C_0$-semigroups of $L^1$ contractions. We study the $ω$-limit of the problem, its most relevant properties, and the appearance of free boundaries in the long-time behaviour. This problem has a formal gradient-flow structure, and we discuss the local/global minimisers of the corresponding free energy in the natural topology related to the set of initial data for the $L^\infty$-constrained gradient flow of probability densities. Furthermore, we analyse a structure preserving implicit finite-volume scheme and discuss its convergence and long-time behaviour.

Convergence of a finite-volume scheme for aggregation-diffusion equations with saturation

In [Bailo, Carrillo, Hu. SIAM J. Appl. Math. 2023] the authors introduce a finite-volume method for aggregation-diffusion equations with non-linear mobility. In this paper we prove convergence of this method using an Aubin--Simons compactness theorem due to Gallouët and Latché. We use suitable discrete $H^1$ and $W^{-1,1}$ discrete norms. We provide two convergence results. A first result shows convergence with general entropies ($U$) (including singular and degenerate) if the initial datum does not have free boundaries, the mobility is Lipschitz, and the confinement ($V$) and aggregation ($K$) potentials are $W^{2,\infty}_0$. A second result shows convergence when the initial datum has free boundaries, mobility is just continuous, and $V$ and $K$ are $W^{1,\infty}$, but under the assumption that the entropy $U$ is $C^1$ and strictly convex.

Interpreting systems of continuity equations in spaces of probability measures through PDE duality

We introduce a notion of duality solution for a single or a system of transport equations in spaces of probability measures reminiscent of the viscosity solution notion for nonlinear parabolic equations. Our notion of solution by duality is, under suitable assumptions, equivalent to gradient flow solutions in case the single/system of equations has this structure. In contrast, we can deal with a quite general system of nonlinear nonlocal, diffusive or not, system of PDEs without any variational structure.

Aggregation-Diffusion Equations for Collective Behaviour in the Sciences

This is a survey article based on the content of the plenary lecture given by José A. Carrillo at the ICIAM23 conference in Tokyo. It is devoted to produce a snapshot of the state of the art in the analysis, numerical analysis, simulation, and applications of the vast area of aggregation-diffusion equations. We also discuss the implications in mathematical biology explaining cell sorting in tissue growth as an example of this modelling framework. This modelling strategy is quite successful in other timely applications such as global optimisation, parameter estimation and machine learning.

A Finite-Volume Scheme for Fractional Diffusion on Bounded Domains

We propose a new fractional Laplacian for bounded domains, expressed as a conservation law and thus particularly suited to finite-volume schemes. Our approach permits the direct prescription of no-flux boundary conditions. We first show the well-posedness theory for the fractional heat equation. We also develop a numerical scheme, which correctly captures the action of the fractional Laplacian and its anomalous diffusion effect. We benchmark numerical solutions for the Lévy-Fokker-Planck equation against known analytical solutions. We conclude by numerically exploring properties of these equations with respect to their stationary states and long-time asymptotics.

Beginner's guide to Aggregation-Diffusion Equations

The aim of this survey is to serve as an introduction to the different techniques available in the broad field of Aggregation-Diffusion Equations. We aim to provide historical context, key literature, and main ideas in the field. We start by discussing the modelling and famous particular cases: Heat equation, Fokker-Plank, Porous medium, Keller-Segel, Chapman-Rubinstein-Schatzman, Newtonian vortex, Caffarelli-Vázquez, McKean-Vlasov, Kuramoto, and one-layer neural networks. In Section 4 we present the well-posedness frameworks given as PDEs in Sobolev spaces, and gradient-flow in Wasserstein. Then we discuss the asymptotic behaviour in time, for which we need to understand minimisers of a free energy. We then present some numerical methods which have been developed. We conclude the paper mentioning some related problems.

Failure of the Hopf-Oleinik lemma for a linear elliptic problem with singular convection of non-negative divergence

In this paper we study existence, uniqueness, and integrability of solutions to the Dirichlet problem $-\mathrm{div}( M(x) \nabla u ) = -\mathrm{div} (E(x) u) + f$ in a bounded domain of $\mathbb R^N$ with $N \ge 3$. We are particularly interested in singular $E$ with $\mathrm{div} E \ge 0$. We start by recalling known existence results when $|E| \in L^N$ that do not rely on the sign of $\mathrm{div} E $. Then, under the assumption that $\mathrm{div} E \ge 0$ distributionally, we extend the existence theory to $|E| \in L^2$. For the uniqueness, we prove a comparison principle in this setting. Lastly, we discuss the particular cases of $E$ singular at one point as $Ax /|x|^2$, or towards the boundary as $\mathrm{div} E \sim \mathrm{dist}(x, \partial Ω)^{-2-α}$. In these cases the singularity of $E$ leads to $u$ vanishing to a certain order. In particular, this shows that the Hopf-Oleinik lemma, i.e. $\partial u / \partial n < 0$, fails in the presence of such singular drift terms $E$.

Singular solutions for space-time fractional equations in a bounded domain

This paper is devoted to describing a linear diffusion problem involving fractional-in-time derivatives and self-adjoint integro-differential space operators posed in bounded domains. One main concern of our paper is to deal with singular boundary data which are typical of fractional diffusion operators in space, and the other one is the consideration of the fractional-in-time Caputo and Riemann--Liouville derivatives in a unified way. We first construct classical solutions of our problems using the spectral theory and discussing the corresponding fractional-in-time ordinary differential equations. We take advantage of the duality between these fractional-in-time derivatives to introduce the notion of weak-dual solution for weighted-integrable data. As the main result of the paper, we prove the well-posedness of the initial and boundary-value problems in this sense.

Blow-up phenomena in nonlocal eigenvalue problems: when theories of $L^1$ and $L^2$ meet

We develop a linear theory of very weak solutions for nonlocal eigenvalue problems $\mathcal L u = λu + f$ involving integro-differential operators posed in bounded domains with homogeneous Dirichlet exterior condition, with and without singular boundary data. We consider mild hypotheses on the Green's function and the standard eigenbasis of the operator. The main examples in mind are the fractional Laplacian operators. Without singular boundary datum and when $λ$ is not an eigenvalue of the operator, we construct an $L^2$-projected theory of solutions, which we extend to the optimal space of data for the operator $\mathcal L$. We present a Fredholm alternative as $λ$ tends to the eigenspace and characterise the possible blow-up limit. The main new ingredient is the transfer of orthogonality to the test function. We then extend the results to singular boundary data and study the so-called large solutions, which blow up at the boundary. For that problem we show that, for any regular value $λ$, there exist "large eigenfunctions" that are singular on the boundary and regular inside. We are also able to present a Fredholm alternative in this setting, as $λ$ approaches the values of the spectrum. We also obtain a maximum principle for weighted $L^1$ solutions when the operator is $L^2$-positive. It yields a global blow-up phenomenon as the first eigenvalue is approached from below. Finally, we recover the classical Dirichlet problem as the fractional exponent approaches one under mild assumptions on the Green's functions. Thus "large eigenfunctions" represent a purely nonlocal phenomenon.

Vortex formation for a non-local interaction model with Newtonian repulsion and superlinear mobility

We consider density solutions for gradient flow equations of the form $u_t = \nabla \cdot ( γ(u) \nabla \mathrm N(u))$, where $\mathrm N$ is the Newtonian repulsive potential in the whole space $\mathbb R^d$ with the nonlinear convex mobility $γ(u)=u^α$, and $α>1$. We show that solutions corresponding to compactly supported initial data remain compactly supported for all times leading to moving free boundaries as in the linear mobility case $γ(u)=u$. For linear mobility it was shown that there is a special solution in the form of a disk vortex of constant intensity in space $u=c_1t^{-1}$ supported in a ball that spreads in time like $c_2t^{1/d}$, thus showing a discontinuous leading front or shock. Our present results are in sharp contrast with the case of concave mobilities of the form $γ(u)=u^α$, with $0<α<1$ studied in [9]. There, we developed a well-posedness theory of viscosity solutions that are positive everywhere and moreover display a fat tail at infinity. Here, we also develop a well-posedness theory of viscosity solutions that in the radial case leads to a very detail analysis allowing us to show a waiting time phenomena. This is a typical behavior for nonlinear degenerate diffusion equations such as the porous medium equation. We will also construct explicit self-similar solutions exhibiting similar vortex-like behaviour characterizing the long time asymptotics of general radial solutions under certain assumptions. Convergent numerical schemes based on the viscosity solution theory are proposed analysing their rate of convergence. We complement our analytical results with numerical simulations ilustrating the proven results and showcasing some open problems.

Infinite-time concentration in Aggregation--Diffusion equations with a given potential

Typically, aggregation-diffusion is modeled by parabolic equations that combine linear or nonlinear diffusion with a Fokker-Planck convection term. Under very general suitable assumptions, we prove that radial solutions of the evolution process converge asymptotically in time towards a stationary state representing the balance between the two effects. Our parabolic system is the gradient flow of an energy functional, and in fact we show that the stationary states are minimizers of a relaxed energy. Here, we study radial solutions of an aggregation-diffusion model that combines nonlinear fast diffusion with a convection term driven by the gradient of a potential, both in balls and the whole space. We show that, depending on the exponent of fast diffusion and the potential, the steady state is given by the sum of an explicit integrable function, plus a Dirac delta at the origin containing the rest of the mass of the initial datum. Furthermore, it is a global minimizer of the relaxed energy. This splitting phenomenon is an uncommon example of blow-up in infinite time.

Three representations of the fractional $p$-Laplacian: semigroup, extension and Balakrishnan formulas

We introduce three representation formulas for the fractional $p$-Laplace operator in the whole range of parameters $0<s<1$ and $1<p<\infty$. Note that for $p\ne 2$ this a nonlinear operator. The first representation is based on a splitting procedure that combines a renormalized nonlinearity with the linear heat semigroup. The second adapts the nonlinearity to the Caffarelli-Silvestre linear extension technique. The third one is the corresponding nonlinear version of the Balakrishnan formula. We also discuss the correct choice of the constant of the fractional $p$-Laplace operator in order to have continuous dependence as $p\to 2$ and $s \to 0^+, 1^-$. A number of consequences and proposals are derived. Thus, we propose a natural spectral-type operator in domains, different from the standard restriction of the fractional $p$-Laplace operator acting on the whole space. We also propose numerical schemes, a new definition of the fractional $p$-Laplacian on manifolds, as well as alternative characterizations of the $W^{s,p}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ seminorms.

A fast regularisation of a Newtonian vortex equation

We consider equations of the form $ u_t = \nabla \cdot ( γ(u) \nabla \mathrm{N}(u))$, where $\mathrm{N}$ is the Newtonian potential (inverse of the Laplacian) posed in the whole space $\mathbb R^d$, and $γ(u)$ is the mobility. For linear mobility, $γ(u)=u$, the equation and some variations have been proposed as a model for superconductivity or superfluidity. In that case the theory leads to uniqueness of bounded weak solutions having the property of compact space support, and in particular there is a special solution in the form of a disk vortex of constant intensity in space $u=c_1t^{-1}$ supported in a ball that spreads in time like $c_2t^{1/d}$, thus showing a discontinuous leading front. In this paper we propose the model with sublinear mobility $γ(u)=u^α$, with $0<α<1$, and prove that nonnegative solutions recover positivity everywhere, and moreover display a fat tail at infinity. The model acts in many ways as a regularization of the previous one. In particular, we find that the equivalent of the previous vortex is an explicit self-similar solution decaying in time like $u=O(t^{-1/α})$ with a space tail with size $u=O(|x|^{- d/(1-α)})$. We restrict the analysis to radial solutions and construct solutions by the method of characteristics. We introduce the mass function, which solves an unusual variation of Burger's equation, and plays an important role in the analysis. We show well-posedness in the sense of viscosity solutions. We also construct numerical finite-difference convergent schemes.

Characterisation of homogeneous fractional Sobolev spaces

Our aim is to characterize the homogeneous fractional Sobolev-Slobodecki\uı spaces $\mathcal{D}^{s,p} (\mathbb{R}^n)$ and their embeddings, for $s \in (0,1]$ and $p\ge 1$. They are defined as the completion of the set of smooth and compactly supported test functions with respect to the Gagliardo-Slobodecki\uı seminorms. For $s\,p < n$ or $s = p = n = 1$ we show that $\mathcal{D}^{s,p}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ is isomorphic to a suitable function space, whereas for $s\,p \ge n$ it is isomorphic to a space of equivalence classes of functions, differing by an additive constant. As one of our main tools, we present a Morrey-Campanato inequality where the Gagliardo-Slobodecki\uı seminorm controls from above a suitable Campanato seminorm.

Asymptotic simplification of Aggregation-Diffusion equations towards the heat kernel

We give sharp conditions for the large time asymptotic simplification of aggregation-diffusion equations with linear diffusion. As soon as the interaction potential is bounded and its first and second derivatives decay fast enough at infinity, then the linear diffusion overcomes its effect, either attractive or repulsive, for large times independently of the initial data, and solutions behave like the fundamental solution of the heat equation with some rate. The potential $W(x) \sim \log |x|$ for $|x| \gg 1$ appears as the natural limiting case when the intermediate asymptotics change. In order to obtain such a result, we produce uniform-in-time estimates in a suitable rescaled change of variables for the entropy, the second moment, Sobolev norms and the $C^α$ regularity with a novel approach for this family of equations using modulus of continuity techniques.
