BERS: Locally Optimal Continuous Algorithm for Maritime Weather Routing with Just-in-Time Arrival

Maritime weather routing must optimize route geometry under dynamic wind-wave conditions, obstacle constraints, and fixed-arrival requirements. We present Bézier Evolve and Refine Strategy (\name{}), a two-stage framework that combines global evolutionary search (CMA-ES) with local variational refinement (FMS). Routes are parametrized as Bézier curves and evaluated with dense along-path sampling, enabling smooth trajectories while preserving practical feasibility constraints and accounting for mid-segment effects. We evaluate \name{} on synthetic benchmarks designed to stress seven operational criteria: continuity, obstacle avoidance, dynamic adaptation, flexible objective design, constant-load feasibility, just-in-time arrival, and local optimality. Across these tests, \name{} matches or improves published baselines while maintaining robust convergence under challenging flow fields and land geometries. We then validate the method on real ocean data using hourly ERA5 forcing over 366 daily departures in 2024 for two trans-oceanic corridors (Atlantic and Pacific), with a physics-based model of an 88~m cargo vessel with optional rigid wingsails. In real-ocean experiments, route optimization alone reduces mean propulsive energy by 23--59\% versus great-circle baselines of the same propulsion mode. Combined with wind-assisted propulsion, total savings reach up to 75\%. These results show that \name{} provides a practical and scalable foundation for just-in-time, energy-efficient weather routing in maritime decarbonization workflows.

Hybrid Search method for Zermelo's navigation problem

In this paper, we present a novel algorithm called the Hybrid Search algorithm that integrates the Zermelo's Navigation Initial Value Problem with the Ferraro-Martín de Diego-Almagro algorithm to find the optimal route for a vessel to reach its destination. Our algorithm is designed to work in both Euclidean and spherical spaces and utilizes a heuristic that allows the vessel to move forward while remaining within a predetermined search cone centred around the destination. This approach not only improves efficiency but also includes obstacle avoidance, making it well-suited for real-world applications. We evaluate the performance of the Hybrid Search algorithm on synthetic vector fields and real ocean currents data, demonstrating its effectiveness and performance.

How do tuna schools associate to dFADs? A study using echo-sounder buoys to identify global patterns

Based on the data gathered by echo-sounder buoys attached to drifting Fish Aggregating Devices (dFADs) across tropical oceans, the current study applies a Machine Learning protocol to examine the temporal trends of tuna schools' association to drifting objects. Using a binary output, metrics typically used in the literature were adapted to account for the fact that the entire tuna aggregation under the dFAD was considered. The median time it took tuna to colonize the dFADs for the first time varied between 25 and 43 days, depending on the ocean, and the longest soak and colonization times were registered in the Pacific Ocean. The tuna schools' Continuous Residence Times were generally shorter than Continuous Absence Times (median values between 5 and 7 days, and 9 and 11 days, respectively), in line with the results found by previous studies. Using a regression output, two novel metrics, namely aggregation time and disaggregation time, were estimated to obtain further insight into the symmetry of the aggregation process. Across all oceans, the time it took for the tuna aggregation to depart from the dFADs was not significantly longer than the time it took for the aggregation to form. The value of these results in the context of the "ecological trap" hypothesis is discussed, and further analyses to enrich and make use of this data source are proposed.

Exceptional Gegenbauer polynomials via isospectral deformation

We show a method to construct isospectral deformations of classical orthogonal polynomials. The construction is based on confluent Darboux transformations, and it allows to construct Sturm-Liouville problems with polynomial eigenfunctions that have an arbitrary number of continuous parameters. We propose to call these new orthogonal polynomial systems \emph{exceptional polynomials of the second kind}. We illustrate this construction by describing the class of exceptional Gegenbauer polynomials of the second kind.

Tuna-AI: tuna biomass estimation with Machine Learning models trained on oceanography and echosounder FAD data

Echo-sounder data registered by buoys attached to drifting FADs provide a very valuable source of information on populations of tuna and their behaviour. This value increases whenthese data are supplemented with oceanographic data coming from CMEMS. We use these sources to develop Tuna-AI, a Machine Learning model aimed at predicting tuna biomass under a given buoy, which uses a 3-day window of echo-sounder data to capture the daily spatio-temporal patterns characteristic of tuna schools. As the supervised signal for training, we employ more than 5000 set events with their corresponding tuna catch reported by the AGAC tuna purse seine fleet.

Complete classification of rational solutions of $A_{2n}$-Painlevé systems

We provide a complete classification and an explicit representation of rational solutions to the fourth Painlevé equation PIV and its higher order generalizations known as the $A_{2n}$-Painlevé or Noumi-Yamada systems. The construction of solutions makes use of the theory of cyclic dressing chains of Schrödinger operators. Studying the local expansions of the solutions around their singularities we find that some coefficients in their Laurent expansion must vanish, which express precisely the conditions of trivial monodromy of the associated potentials. The characterization of trivial monodromy potentials with quadratic growth implies that all rational solutions can be expressed as Wronskian determinants of suitably chosen sequences of Hermite polynomials. The main classification result states that every rational solution to the $A_{2n}$-Painlevé system corresponds to a cycle of Maya diagrams, which can be indexed by an oddly coloured integer sequence. Finally, we establish the link with the standard approach to building rational solutions, based on applying Bäcklund transformations on seed solutions, by providing a representation for the symmetry group action on coloured sequences and Maya cycles.

Exceptional Legendre Polynomials and Confluent Darboux Transformations

Exceptional orthogonal polynomials are families of orthogonal polynomials that arise as solutions of Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problems. They generalize the classical families of Hermite, Laguerre, and Jacobi polynomials by allowing for polynomial sequences that miss a finite number of "exceptional" degrees. In this paper we introduce a new construction of multi-parameter exceptional Legendre polynomials by considering the isospectral deformation of the classical Legendre operator. Using confluent Darboux transformations and a technique from inverse scattering theory, we obtain a fully explicit description of the operators and polynomials in question. The main novelty of the paper is the novel construction that allows for exceptional polynomial families with an arbitrary number of real parameters.

NILM as a regression versus classification problem: the importance of thresholding

Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) aims to predict the status or consumption of domestic appliances in a household only by knowing the aggregated power load. NILM can be formulated as regression problem or most often as a classification problem. Most datasets gathered by smart meters allow to define naturally a regression problem, but the corresponding classification problem is a derived one, since it requires a conversion from the power signal to the status of each device by a thresholding method. We treat three different thresholding methods to perform this task, discussing their differences on various devices from the UK-DALE dataset. We analyze the performance of deep learning state-of-the-art architectures on both the regression and classification problems, introducing criteria to select the most convenient thresholding method.

Lectures on exceptional orthogonal polynomials and rational solutions to Painlevé equations

These are the lecture notes for a course on exceptional polynomials taught at the \textit{AIMS-Volkswagen Stiftung Workshop on Introduction to Orthogonal Polynomials and Applications} that took place in Douala (Cameroon) from October 5-12, 2018. They summarize the basic results and construction of exceptional poynomials, developed over the past ten years. In addition, some new results are presented on the construction of rational solutions to Painlevé equation PIV and its higher order generalizations that belong to the $A_{2n}^{(1)}$-Painlevé hierarchy. The construction is based on dressing chains of Schrödinger operators with potentials that are rational extensions of the harmonic oscillator. Some of the material presented here (Sturm-Liouville operators, classical orthogonal polynomials, Darboux-Crum transformations, etc.) are classical and can be found in many textbooks, while some results (genus, interlacing and cyclic Maya diagrams) are new and presented for the first time in this set of lecture notes.

Cyclic Maya diagrams and rational solutions of higher order Painlevé systems

This paper focuses on the construction of rational solutions for the $A_{2n}$ Painlevé system, also called the Noumi-Yamada system, which are considered the higher order generalizations of PIV. In this even case, we introduce a method to construct the rational solutions based on cyclic dressing chains of Schrödinger operators with potentials in the class of rational extensions of the harmonic oscillator. Each potential in the chain can be indexed by a single Maya diagram and expressed in terms of a Wronskian determinant whose entries are Hermite polynomials. We introduce the notion of cyclic Maya diagrams and we characterize them for any possible period, using the concepts of genus and interlacing. The resulting classes of solutions can be expressed in terms of special polynomials that generalize the families of generalized Hermite, generalized Okamoto and Umemura polynomials, showing that they are particular cases of a larger family.

Assessing the effect of advertising expenditures upon sales: a Bayesian structural time series model

We propose a robust implementation of the Nerlove--Arrow model using a Bayesian structural time series model to explain the relationship between advertising expenditures of a country-wide fast-food franchise network with its weekly sales. Thanks to the flexibility and modularity of the model, it is well suited to generalization to other markets or situations. Its Bayesian nature facilitates incorporating \emph{a priori} information (the manager's views), which can be updated with relevant data. This aspect of the model will be used to present a strategy of budget scheduling across time and channels.

A Bochner type classification theorem for exceptional orthogonal polynomials

It was recently conjectured that every system of exceptional orthogonal polynomials is related to classical orthogonal polynomials by a sequence of Darboux transformations. In this paper we prove this conjecture, which paves the road to a complete classification of all exceptional orthogonal polynomials. In some sense, this paper can be regarded as the extension of Bochner's result for classical orthogonal polynomials to the exceptional class. As a supplementary result, we derive a canonical form for exceptional operators based on a bilinear formalism, and prove that every exceptional operator has trivial monodromy at all primary poles.

Limits on the performance of Infotaxis under inaccurate modelling of the environment

We study the performance of infotaxis search strategy measured by the rate of success and mean search time, under changes in the environment parameters such as diffusivity, rate of emission or wind velocity. We also investigate the drop of performance caused by an innacurate modelling of the environment. Our findings show that infotaxis remains robust as long as the estimated parameters fall within a certain range around their true values, but the success rate quickly drops making infotaxis no longer feasible if the searcher agent severely underestimates or overestimates the real environment parameters. This study places some limits on the performance of infotaxis, and thus it has practical consequences for the design of infotaxis based machines to track and detect an emitting source of chemicals or volatile substances.

Oscillation theorems for the Wronskian of an arbitrary sequence of eigenfunctions of Schrödinger's equation

The work of Adler provides necessary and sufficient conditions for the Wronskian of a given sequence of eigenfunctions of Schrödinger's equation to have constant sign in its domain of definition. We extend this result by giving explicit formulas for the number of real zeros of the Wronskian of an arbitrary sequence of eigenfunctions. Our results apply in particular to Wronskians of classical orthogonal polynomials, thus generalizing classical results by Karlin and Szegő. Our formulas hold under very mild conditions that are believed to hold for generic values of the parameters. In the Hermite case, our results allow to prove some conjectures recently formulated by Felder et al.

Geometry-induced fluctuations of olfactory searches in bounded domains

In olfactory search an immobile target emits chemical molecules at constant rate. The molecules are transported by the medium which is assumed to be turbulent. Considering a searcher able to detect such chemical signals and whose motion follows the infotaxis strategy, we study the statistics of the first-passage time to the target when the searcher moves on a finite two-dimensional lattice of different geometries. Far from the target, where the concentration of chemicals is low the direction of the searcher's first movement is determined by the geometry of the domain and the topology of the lattice, inducing strong fluctuations on the average search time with respect to the initial position of the searcher. The domain is partitioned in well defined regions characterized by the direction of the first movement. If the search starts over the interface between two different regions, large fluctuations in the search time are observed.

Extended Krein-Adler theorem for the translationally shape invariant potentials

Considering successive extensions of primary translationally shape invariant potentials, we enlarge the Krein-Adler theorem to mixed chains of state adding and state-deleting Darboux-Bäcklund transformations. It allows us to establish novel bilinear Wronskian and determinantal identities for classical orthogonal polynomials.

Multifractality and long memory of a financial index

In this paper we will try to assess the multifractality displayed by the high-frequency returns of Madrid's Stock Exchange IBEX35 index. A Multifractal Detrended Fluctuation Analysis shows that this index has a wide singularity spectrum which is most likely caused by its long memory. Our findings also show that this long-memory can be considered as the superposition of a high-frequency component (related to the daily cycles of arrival of information to the market), over a slowly-varying component that reverberates for long periods of time and which shows no apparent relation with human economic cycles. This later component is therefore postulated to be endogenous to market's dynamics and to be also the most probable source of some of the stylized facts commonly associated with financial time series.

Scaling, stability and distribution of the high-frequency returns of the IBEX35 index

In this paper we perform a statistical analysis of the high-frequency returns of the IBEX35 Madrid stock exchange index. We find that its probability distribution seems to be stable over different time scales, a stylized fact observed in many different financial time series. However, an in-depth analysis of the data using maximum likelihood estimation and different goodness-of-fit tests rejects the Lévy-stable law as a plausible underlying probabilistic model. The analysis shows that the Normal Inverse Gaussian distribution provides an overall fit for the data better than any of the other subclasses of the family of the Generalized Hyperbolic distributions and certainly much better than the Lévy-stable laws. Furthermore, the right (resp. left) tail of the distribution seems to follow a power-law with exponent α=4.60 (resp. α=4.28). Finally, we present evidence that the observed stability is due to temporal correlations or non-stationarities of the data.
