Tuning charge density wave order and structure via uniaxial stress in a stripe-ordered cuprate superconductor

Unidirectional spin and charge density wave order in the cuprates is known to compete with superconductivity. In the stripe order (La,M)$_2$CuO$_4$ family of cuprates, spin and charge order occur as unidirectional order that can be stabilized by symmetry breaking structural distortions, such as the low temperature tetragonal (LTT) phase. Here we examine the interplay between structure and the formation of charge density wave (CDW) order in the LTT phase of La$_{1.475}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ by applying uniaxial stress to distort the structure and influence the formation of CDW order. Using resonant soft x-ray scattering to measure both the CDW order and (0 0 1) structural-nematic Bragg peaks, we find that the application of uniaxial stress along the Cu-O bond direction suppresses the (0 0 1) peak and has the net effect of reducing CDW order, but does so only for CDW order propagating parallel to the applied stress. We connect these observations to previous work showing an enhanced superconducting transition temperature under uniaxial stress; providing insight into how CDW, superconductivity, nematicity, and structure are related and can be tuned relative to one another in cuprates.

Orbital-selective time-domain signature of nematicity dynamics in the charge-density-wave phase of La$_{1.65}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$

Understanding the interplay between charge, nematic, and structural ordering tendencies in cuprate superconductors is critical to unraveling their complex phase diagram. Using pump-probe time-resolved resonant x-ray scattering on the (0 0 1) Bragg peak at the Cu $L_3$ and O $K$ resonances, we investigate non-equilibrium dynamics of $Q_a = Q_b = 0$ nematic order and its association with both charge density wave (CDW) order and lattice dynamics in La$_{1.65}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$. The orbital selectivity of the resonant x-ray scattering cross-section allows nematicity dynamics associated with the planar O 2$p$ and Cu 3$d$ states to be distinguished from the response of anisotropic lattice distortions. A direct time-domain comparison of CDW translational-symmetry breaking and nematic rotational-symmetry breaking reveals that these broken symmetries remain closely linked in the photoexcited state, consistent with the stability of CDW topological defects in the investigated pump fluence regime.

Diamagnetism and density wave order in the pseudogap regime of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$

Clear experimental evidence of charge density wave correlations competing with superconducting order in YBCO have thrust their relationship with the pseudogap regime into the spotlight. To aid in characterizing the pseudogap regime, we propose a dimensionless ratio of the diamagnetic susceptibility to the correlation length of the charge density wave correlations. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we compute this ratio on the classical model of Hayward et. al. (Science 343, 1336 (2014)), which describes angular fluctuations of a multicomponent order, capturing both superconducting and density wave correlations. We compare our results with available data on YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$, and propose experiments to clarify the value of this dimensionless ratio using existing samples and techniques.

Angular fluctuations of a multi-component order describe the pseudogap regime of the cuprate superconductors

The hole-doped cuprate high temperature superconductors enter the pseudogap regime as their superconducting critical temperature, $T_c$, falls with decreasing hole density. Experiments have probed this regime for over two decades, but we argue that decisive new information has emerged from recent X-ray scattering experiments (arXiv:1207.0915, arXiv:1206.4333, arXiv:1207.3667). The experiments observe incommensurate charge density wave fluctuations whose strength rises gradually over a wide temperature range above $T_c$, but then decreases as the temperature is lowered below $T_c$. We propose a theory in which the superconducting and charge-density wave orders exhibit angular fluctuations in a 6-dimensional space. The theory provides a natural quantitative fit to the X-ray data, and can be a basis for understanding other characteristics of the pseudogap.
