Minimum volume cusped hyperbolic three-manifolds

This paper is the second in a series whose goal is to understand the structure of low-volume complete orientable hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Using Mom technology, we prove that any one-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold with volume <= 2.848 can be obtained by a Dehn filling on one of 21 cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We also show how this result can be used to construct a complete list of all one-cusped hyperbolic three-manifolds with volume <= 2.848 and all closed hyperbolic three-manifolds with volume <= 0.943. In particular, the Weeks manifold is the unique smallest volume closed orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold.

Mom technology and volumes of hyperbolic 3-manifolds

This paper is the first in a series whose goal is to understand the structure of low-volume complete orientable hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Here we introduce Mom technology and enumerate the hyperbolic Mom-n manifolds for n <= 4.

Shrinkwrapping and the taming of hyperbolic 3-manifolds

We introduce a new technique for finding CAT(-1) surfaces in hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We use this to show that a complete hyperbolic 3-manifold with finitely generated fundamental group is geometrically and topologically tame.

Group negative curvature for 3-manifolds with genuine laminations

We show that if a closed atoroidal 3-manifold M contains a genuine lamination, then it is group negatively curved in the sense of Gromov. Specifically, we exploit the structure of the non-product complementary regions of the genuine lamination and then apply the first author's Ubiquity Theorem to show that M satisfies a linear isoperimetric inequality.

Homotopy Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds are Hyperbolic

This paper introduces a rigorous computer-assisted procedure for analyzing hyperbolic 3-manifolds. This technique is used to complete the proof of several long-standing rigidity conjectures in 3-manifold theory as well as to provide a new lower bound for the volume of a closed orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold. We prove the following result: \it\noindent Let $N$ be a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold. Then \begin{enumerate} \item[(1)] If $f\colon M \to N$ is a homotopy equivalence where $M$ is a closed irreducible 3-manifold, then $f$ is homotopic to a homeomorphism. \item[(2)] If $f,g\colon M\to N$ are homotopic homeomorphisms, then $f$ is isotopic to $g$. \item[(3)] The space of hyperbolic metrics on $N$ is path connected. \end{enumerate}

On the geometric and topological rigidity of hyperbolic 3-manifolds

A homotopy equivalence between a hyperbolic 3-manifold and a closed irreducible 3-manifold is homotopic to a homeomorphsim provided the hyperbolic manifold satisfies a purely geometric condition. There are no known examples of hyperbolic 3-manifolds which do not satisfy this condition.
