Kohn-Sham models for encapsulated two-dimensional materials

We study Kohn-Sham Density Functional Theory (DFT) models describing the electronic structure of two-dimensional materials placed in a three-dimensional environment, encapsulated between two parallel conducting electrodes. In this geometry, the Dirichlet boundary conditions at the electrodes screen the Coulomb interaction, which becomes effectively short-ranged, of Yukawa type. We prove that some nonlinear Kohn-Sham DFT models are well-posed in this setting, both for periodic materials (such as graphene) and for quasi-periodic materials (such as twisted bilayer graphene and other moir\'e materials for generic incommensurate twist angles).

Peierls Instability in Hexagonal Lattices

We investigate a conventional tight-binding model for graphene, where distortion of the honeycomb lattice is allowed, but penalized by a quadratic energy. We prove that the optimal 3-periodic lattice configuration has Kekul\'e O-type symmetry, and that for a sufficiently small elasticity parameter, the minimizer is not translation-invariant. Conversely, we prove that for a large elasticity parameter the translation-invariant configuration is the unique minimizer.

Existence and non-existence of minimizers for a multi-particle model with concave nonlinearity

We study a multi--particle model including a kinetic energy and a non linear local self-interaction, both in the bosonic and fermionic cases. In both cases, we prove that the model is well-posed if the number of particles is large enough. In particular, we show that there is a nonlinearity for which the model with $N=2$ particles is well-posed, while the model with $N=1$ is not.

Topological junctions for one-dimensional systems

We study and classify the emergence of protected edge modes at the junction of one-dimensional materials. Using symmetries of Lagrangian planes in boundary symplectic spaces, we present a novel proof of the periodic table of topological insulators in one dimension. We show that edge modes necessarily arise at the junction of two materials having different topological indices. Our approach provides a systematic framework for understanding symmetry-protected modes in one-dimension. It does not rely on periodic nor ergodicity and covers a wide range of operators which includes both continuous and discrete models.

Edge states for tight-binding operators with soft walls

We study one- and two-dimensional periodic tight-binding models under the presence of a potential that grows to infinity in one direction, hence preventing the particles to escape in this direction (the soft wall). We prove that a spectral flow appears in these corresponding edge models, as the wall is shifted. We identity this flow as a number of Bloch bands, and provide a lower bound for the number of edge states appearing in such models.

Thermodynamic Limits of Electronic Systems

We review thermodynamic limits and scaling limits of electronic structure models for condensed matter. We discuss several mathematical ways to implement these limits in three models of increasing chemical complexity and mathematical difficulty: (1) Thomas-Fermi like models; (2) Hartree-Fock like models; and (3) Kohn-Sham density functional theory models.

Density functional theory for homogeneous two dimensional materials with magnetic fields

This paper studies DFT models for homogeneous 2D materials in 3D space, under a constant perpendicular magnetic field. We show how to reduce the three--dimensional energy functional to a one--dimensional one, similarly as in our previous work. This is done by minimizing over states invariant under magnetic translations and that commute with the Landau operator. In the reduced model, the Pauli principle no longer appears. It is replaced by a penalization term in the energy.

Phase transition in the Peierls model for polyacetylene

We consider the Peierls model for closed polyactetylene chains with an even number of carbon atoms as well as infinite chains, in the presence of temperature. We prove the existence of a critical temperature below which the chain is dimerized, and above which it is 1-periodic. The chain behaves like an insulator below the critical temperature and like a metal above it. We characterize the critical temperature in the thermodynamic limit model, and prove that it is exponentially small in the rigidity of the chain. We study the phase transition around this critical temperature.

Keller and Lieb-Thirring estimates of the eigenvalues in the gap of Dirac operators

We estimate the lowest eigenvalue in the gap of the essential spectrum of a Dirac operator with mass in terms of a Lebesgue norm of the potential. Such a bound is the counterpart for Dirac operators of the Keller estimates for the Schr\"odinger operator, which are equivalent to Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev interpolation inequalities. Domain, self-adjointness, optimality and critical values of the norms are addressed, while the optimal potential is given by a Dirac equation with a Kerr nonlinearity. A new critical bound appears, which is the smallest value of the norm of the potential for which eigenvalues may reach the bottom of the gap in the essential spectrum. The Keller estimate is then extended to a Lieb-Thirring inequality for the eigenvalues in the gap. Most of our result are established in the Birman-Schwinger reformulation.

A simple derivation of moir\'e-scale continuous models for twisted bilayer graphene

We provide a formal derivation of a reduced model for twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) from Density Functional Theory. Our derivation is based on a variational approximation of the TBG Kohn-Sham Hamiltonian and asymptotic limit techniques. In contrast with other approaches, it does not require the introduction of an intermediate tight-binding model. The so-obtained model is similar to that of the Bistritzer-MacDonald (BM) model but contains additional terms. Its parameters can be easily computed from Kohn-Sham calculations on single-layer graphene and untwisted bilayer graphene with different stackings. It allows one in particular to estimate the parameters $w_{\rm AA}$ and $w_{\rm AB}$ of the BM model from first-principles. The resulting numerical values, namely $w_{\rm AA}= w_{\rm AB} \simeq 126$ meV for the experimental interlayer mean distance are in good agreement with the empirical values $w_{\rm AA}= w_{\rm AB}=110$ meV obtained by fitting to experimental data. We also show that if the BM parameters are set to $w_{\rm AA}= w_{\rm AB} \simeq 126$ meV, the BM model is an accurate approximation of our reduced model.

Symmetric Fermi projections and Kitaev's table: topological phases of matter in low dimensions

We review Kitaev's celebrated "periodic table" for topological phases of condensed matter, which identifies ground states (Fermi projections) of gapped periodic quantum systems up to continuous deformations. We study families of projections which depend on a periodic crystal momentum and respect the symmetries that characterize the various classes of topological insulators. Our aim is to classify such families in a systematic, explicit, and constructive way: we identify numerical indices for all symmetry classes and provide algorithms to deform families of projections whose indices agree. Aiming at simplicity, we illustrate the method for 0- and 1-dimensional systems, and recover the (weak and strong) topological invariants proposed by Kitaev and others.

Density Functional Theory for two-dimensional homogeneous materials

We study Density Functional Theory models for systems which are translationally invariant in some directions, such as a homogeneous 2-d slab in the 3-d space. We show how the different terms of the energy are modified and we derive reduced equations in the remaining directions. In the Thomas-Fermi model, we prove that there is perfect screening, and provide decay estimates for the electronic density away from the slab. In Kohn-Sham models, we prove that the Pauli principle is replaced by a penalization term in the energy. In the reduced Hartree-Fock model in particular, we prove that the resulting model is well-posed, and provide some properties for the minimizer.

Second-order homogenization of periodic Schrödinger operators with highly oscillating potentials

We consider the homogenization at second-order in $\varepsilon$ of $\mathbb{L}$-periodic Schrödinger operators with rapidly oscillating potentials of the form $H^\varepsilon =-Δ+ \varepsilon^{-1} v(x,\varepsilon^{-1}x ) + W(x)$ on $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$, where $\mathbb{L}$ is a Bravais lattice of $\mathbb{R}^d$, $v$ is $(\mathbb{L} \times \mathbb{L})$-periodic, $W$ is $\mathbb{L}$-periodic, and $\varepsilon \in \mathbb{N}^{-1}$. We treat both the linear equation with fixed right-hand side and the eigenvalue problem, as well as the case of physical observables such as the integrated density of states. We illustrate numerically that these corrections to the homogenized solution can significantly improve the first-order ones, even when $\varepsilon$ is not small.

Spectral properties of periodic systems cut at an angle

We consider a semi-periodic two-dimensional Schrödinger operator which is cut at an angle. When the cut is commensurate with the periodic lattice, the spectrum of the operator has the band-gap Bloch structure. We prove that in the incommensurable case, there are no gaps: the gaps of the bulk operator are filled with edge spectrum.

Numerical quadrature in the Brillouin zone for periodic Schrodinger operators

As a consequence of Bloch's theorem, the numerical computation of the fermionic ground state density matrices and energies of periodic Schrodinger operators involves integrals over the Brillouin zone. These integrals are difficult to compute numerically in metals due to discontinuities in the integrand. We perform an error analysis of several widely-used quadrature rules and smearing methods for Brillouin zone integration. We precisely identify the assumptions implicit in these methods and rigorously prove error bounds. Numerical results for two-dimensional periodic systems are also provided. Our results shed light on the properties of these numerical schemes, and provide guidance as to the appropriate choice of numerical parameters.

Optimizers for the finite-rank Lieb-Thirring inequality

The finite-rank Lieb-Thirring inequality provides an estimate on a Riesz sum of the $N$ lowest eigenvalues of a Schr\"odinger operator $-\Delta-V(x)$ in terms of an $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)$ norm of the potential $V$. We prove here the existence of an optimizing potential for each $N$, discuss its qualitative properties and the Euler--Lagrange equation (which is a system of coupled nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations) and study in detail the behavior of optimizing sequences. In particular, under the condition $\gamma>\max\{0,2-d/2\}$ on the Riesz exponent in the inequality, we prove the compactness of all the optimizing sequences up to translations. We also show that the optimal Lieb-Thirring constant cannot be stationary in $N$, which sheds a new light on a conjecture of Lieb-Thirring. In dimension $d=1$ at $\gamma=3/2$, we show that the optimizers with $N$ negative eigenvalues are exactly the Korteweg-de Vries $N$--solitons and that optimizing sequences must approach the corresponding manifold. Our work covers the critical case $\gamma=0$ in dimension $d\geq3$ (Cwikel-Lieb-Rozenblum inequality) for which we exhibit and use a link with invariants of the Yamabe problem.

The nonlinear Schrödinger equation for orthonormal functions: I. Existence of ground states

We study the nonlinear Schrödinger equation for systems of $N$ orthonormal functions. We prove the existence of ground states for all $N$ when the exponent $p$ of the non linearity is not too large, and for an infinite sequence $N_j$ tending to infinity in the whole range of possible $p$'s, in dimensions $d\geq1$. This allows us to prove that translational symmetry is broken for a quantum crystal in the Kohn-Sham model with a large Dirac exchange constant.
