Ricci Flow Preserves Positive Sectional Curvature on Homogeneous Spheres

We prove that the Ricci flow preserves positive sectional curvature on homogeneous spheres and complex projective spaces. In conjunction with prior results, this completes the classification of which homogeneous spaces have positively curved metrics flowing outside the set of positively curved metrics and which do not.

Positive intermediate curvatures and Ricci flow

We show that, for any $n\geq 2$, there exists a homogeneous space of dimension $d=8n-4$ with metrics of $\mathrm{Ric}_{\frac{d}{2}-5}>0$ if $n\neq 3$ and $\mathrm{Ric}_6>0$ if $n=3$ which evolve under the Ricci flow to metrics whose Ricci tensor is not $(d-4)$-positive. Consequently, Ricci flow does not preserve a range of curvature conditions that interpolate between positive sectional and positive scalar curvature. This extends a theorem of Böhm and Wilking in the case of $n=2$.

Examples of biquotients whose tangent bundle is not a biquotient vector bundle

A biquotient vector bundle is any vector bundle over a biquotient $G/\!\!/ H$ of the form $G\times_{H} V$ for an $H$-representation $V$. Over most biquotients, biquotient vector bundles are the only vector bundles known to admit metrics of non-negative sectional curvature, and hence they play a crucial role in the context of the converse to the Soul Theorem of Cheeger and Gromoll. In this article, we study the question of when the tangent bundle of $G/\!\!/ H$ is a biquotient vector bundle. We find infinite families of examples of biquotients $M\cong G/\!\!/ H$ for which the tangent bundle is not a biquotient vector bundle for any presentation of $M$ as a biquotient. In addition, we find infinite families of manifolds which arise as biquotients in two ways: one for which the tangent bundle is a biquotient bundle, and one for which it is not. Some of these results depend on an observation of Hirzebruch which relates the signature and Euler characteristic of an almost complex manifold. We include a proof of this fact as it seems to be missing from the literature.

Positive $\mathrm{Ric}_2$ curvature on products of spheres and their quotients via intermediate fatness

We construct metrics of positive $2^{\rm nd}$ intermediate Ricci curvature, $\mathrm{Ric}_2>0$, on closed manifolds of dimensions 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14, including $\mathbb{S}^6\times\mathbb{S}^7$, $\mathbb{S}^7\times\mathbb{S}^7$ and all their simply connected isometric quotients. In particular, we obtain infinitely many examples in dimension 13. We also produce infinitely many non-simply connected spaces with $\mathrm{Ric}_2>0$ in dimensions 13 and 14, including $\mathbb{RP}^6\times \mathbb{RP}^7$ and $\mathbb{RP}^7\times \mathbb{RP}^7$, which cannot admit a metric of positive sectional curvature. The main new idea is a generalization of the concept of fatness which ensures the existence of $\mathrm{Ric}_2>0$ metrics on the total space of certain homogeneous bundles.

Vector bundles of non-negative curvature over cohomogeneity one manifolds

We provide several results on the existence of metrics of non-negative sectional curvature on vector bundles over certain cohomogeneity one manifolds and homogeneous spaces up to suitable stabilization. Beside explicit constructions of the metrics, this is achieved by identifying equivariant structures upon these vector bundles via a comparison of their equivariant and non-equivariant K-theory. For this, in particular, we transcribe equivariant K-theory to equivariant rational cohomology and investigate surjectivity properties of induced maps in the Borel fibration via rational homotopy theory.

Biquotient vector bundles with no inverse

In previous work, the second author and others have found conditions on a homogeneous space $G/H$ which imply that, up to stabilization, all vector bundles over $G/H$ admit Riemannian metrics of non-negative sectional curvature. One important ingredient of their approach is Segal's result that the set of vector bundles of the form $G\times_H V$ for a representation $V$ of $H$ contains inverses within the class. We show that this approach cannot work for biquotients $G/\!\!/ H$, where we consider vector bundles of the form $G\times_{H} V$. We call such vector bundles biquotient bundles. Specifically, we show that in each dimension $n\geq 4$ except $n=5$, there is a simply connected biquotient of dimension $n$ with a biquotient bundle which does not contain an inverse within the class of biquotient bundles. In addition, we show that for $n\geq 6$ except $n=7$, there are infinitely many homotopy types of biquotients with the property that no non-trivial biquotient bundle has an inverse. Lastly, we show that every biquotient bundle over every simply connected biquotient $M^n = G/\!\!/ H$ with $G$ simply connected and with $n\in \{2,3,5\}$ has an inverse in the class of biquotient bundles.

Infinite families of manifolds of positive $k^{\rm th}$-intermediate Ricci curvature with $k$ small

Positive $k^{\rm th}$-intermediate Ricci curvature on a Riemannian $n$-manifold, to be denoted by $\mathrm{Ric}_k > 0$, is a condition that interpolates between positive sectional and positive Ricci curvature (when $k =1$ and $k=n-1$ respectively). In this work, we produce many examples of manifolds of $\mathrm{Ric}_k > 0$ with $k$ small by examining symmetric and normal homogeneous spaces, along with certain metric deformations of fat homogeneous bundles. As a consequence, we show that every dimension $n\geq 7$ congruent to $3\,\mathrm{mod}\ 4$ supports infinitely many closed simply connected manifolds of pairwise distinct homotopy type, all of which admit homogeneous metrics of $\mathrm{Ric}_k > 0$ for some $k 0$ with $k\leq n/2$, but do not admit metrics of positive sectional curvature.

Diffeomorphic souls and disconnected moduli spaces of nonnegatively curved metrics

We give examples of open manifolds that carry infinitely many complete metrics of nonnegative sectional curvature such that they all have the same soul, and their isometry classes lie in different connected components of the moduli space. All previously known examples of this kind have souls of codimension one. In our examples the souls have codimensions three and two.

Moduli space of metrics of nonnegative sectional or positive Ricci curvature on homotopy real projective spaces

We show that the moduli space of metrics of nonnegative sectional curvature on every homotopy ${\mathbb {R}} P^5$ has infinitely many path components. We also show that in each dimension $4k+1$ there are at least $2^{2k}$ homotopy ${\mathbb {R}} P^{4k+1}$s of pairwise distinct oriented diffeomorphism type for which the moduli space of metrics of positive Ricci curvature has infinitely many path components. Examples of closed manifolds with finite fundamental group with these properties were known before only in dimensions $4k+3\geq 7$.

Open manifolds with non-homeomorphic positively curved souls

We extend two known existence results to simply connected manifolds with positive sectional curvature: we show that there exist pairs of simply connected positively-curved manifolds that are tangentially homotopy equivalent but not homeomorphic, and we deduce that an open manifold may admit a pair of non-homeomorphic simply connected and positively-curved souls. Examples of such pairs are given by explicit pairs of Eschenburg spaces. To deduce the second statement from the first, we extend our earlier work on the stable converse soul question and show that it has a positive answer for a class of spaces that includes all Eschenburg spaces.

The stable converse soul question for positively curved homogeneous spaces

The stable converse soul question (SCSQ) asks whether, given a real vector bundle \(E\) over a compact manifold, some stabilization \(E\times\R^k\) admits a metric with non-negative (sectional) curvature. We extend previous results to show that the SCSQ has an affirmative answer for all real vector bundles over any simply connected homogeneous manifold with positive curvature, except possibly for the Berger space \(B^{13}\). Along the way, we show that the same is true for all simply connected homogeneous spaces of dimension at most seven, for arbitrary products of simply connected compact rank one symmetric spaces of dimensions multiples of four, and for certain products of spheres. Moreover, we observe that the SCSQ is "stable under tangential homotopy equivalence": if it has an affirmative answer for all vector bundles over a certain manifold \(M\), then the same is true for any manifold tangentially homotopy equivalent to~\(M\). Our main tool is topological K-theory. Over \(B^{13}\), there is essentially one stable class of real vector bundles for which our method fails.

A note on the Petersen-Wilhelm conjecture

In this note we consider submersions from compact manifolds, homotopy equivalent to the Eschenburg or Bazaikin spaces of positive curvature. We show that if the submersion is nontrivial, the dimension of the base is greater than the dimension of the fiber. Together with previous results, this proves the Petersen-Wilhelm Conjecture for all the known compact manifolds with positive curvature.

Nonnegative curvature on stable bundles over compact rank one symmetric spaces

In this note we show that every (real or complex) vector bundle over a compact rank one symmetric space carries, after taking the Whitney sum with a trivial bundle of sufficiently large rank, a metric with nonnegative sectional curvature. We also examine the case of complex vector bundles over other manifolds, and give upper bounds for the rank of the trivial bundle that is necessary to add when the base is a sphere.
