Obtaining highly excited eigenstates of the localized XX chain via DMRG-X

We benchmark a variant of the recently introduced DMRG-X algorithm against exact results for the localized random field XX chain. We find that the eigenstates obtained via DMRG-X exhibit a highly accurate l-bit description for system sizes much bigger than the direct, many body, exact diagonalization in the spin variables is able to access. We take advantage of the underlying free fermion description of the XX model to accurately test the strengths and limitations of this algorithm for large system sizes. We discuss the theoretical constraints on the performance of the algorithm from the entanglement properties of the eigenstates, and its actual performance at different values of disorder. A small but significant improvement to the algorithm is also presented, which helps significantly with convergence. We find that at high entanglement, DMRG-X shows a bias towards eigenstates with low entanglement, but can be improved with increased bond dimension. This result suggests that one must be careful when applying the algorithm for interacting many body localized spin models near a transition.

Towards a statistical theory of transport by strongly-interacting lattice fermions

We present a study of electric transport at high temperature in a model of strongly interacting spinless fermions without disorder. We use exact diagonalization to study the statistics of the energy eigenvalues, eigenstates, and the matrix elements of the current. These suggest that our nonrandom Hamiltonian behaves like a member of a certain ensemble of Gaussian random matrices. We calculate the conductivity $σ(ω)$ and examine its behavior, both in finite size samples and as extrapolated to the thermodynamic limit. We find that $σ(ω)$ has a prominent non-divergent singularity at $ω=0$ reflecting a power-law long-time tail in the current autocorrelation function that arises from nonlinear couplings between the long-wavelength diffusive modes of the energy and particle number.

Non-trivial fixed point structure of the two-dimensional +-J 3-state Potts ferromagnet/spin glass

The fixed point structure of the 2D 3-state random-bond Potts model with a bimodal ($\pm$J) distribution of couplings is for the first time fully determined using numerical renormalization group techniques. Apart from the pure and T=0 critical fixed points, two other non-trivial fixed points are found. One is the critical fixed point for the random-bond, but unfrustrated, ferromagnet. The other is a bicritical fixed point analogous to the bicritical Nishimori fixed point found in the random-bond frustrated Ising model. Estimates of the associated critical exponents are given for the various fixed points of the random-bond Potts model.
